The Future Starts Now: Signing Day Running Diary
We will continue to update this post today as Kentucky receives signed letters of intent from the players that will make up the 2011 class – the first of the Joker Phillips head coaching era. There are a handful of announcement ceremonies scheduled, with Boyle County’s Lamar Dawson’s being the most notable, and we’ll keep you abreast of what happens and where you can watch them when available.
8:00 Let’s do this! Cats got another commitment last night in the form of Alcoa (Tenn.) defensive lineman Darrell Warren. He is unranked by Rivals and switched his verbal from UT-Chattanooga. That’s right, I said Alcoa. The Cats have also received a verbal from three-star offensive lineman James Elliott, a teammate of commit Demarius Rancifer.
8:15 Things seem a little grim on the Lamar Dawson front right now. A lot of people are saying it looks like he’s headed to Tennessee, including Larry “Cats are 4-1 favorites” Vaught. Even Mary Jo Perino says she’s being told he’ll pick USC. I could really go for a “I saw him in a UK hoodie last night” rumor right now….
8:25 The Cats have received LOIs from Farrington Huguenin, Ashely Lowery, Nile Daniel and Darrian Miller
8:37 Vaught joins the “Dawson to USC” camp.
8:40 Eric Dixon’s letter is in. He was voted All-State First Team in Alabama as a senior. Sadly, he did not have a guess on Dawson.
8:46 The table at Lamar Dawson’s press conference has only UT and UK hats. He’s either pulling a USC hat out of nowhere or he just threw the local media a curveball that would impress Barry Zito of three years ago.

9:02 UK receives letters from Demarco Robinson, Josh Clemons and DJ Warren. Robinson, who broke Georgia’s high school receiving yards record last season, and Clemons, voted as Georgia’s 4A Offensive Player of the Year, should add speed to the offense. DJ Warren will likely just have copyright issues with this guy.

10:08 Another player is on the board: Zach West of Lexington Christian, one of the highest profile names in the class, is now signed. He becomes the first co-worker of Drew Franklin to accept a Division I scholarship and the first Cat to sign while on a mission trip in Costa Rica. Tim Masthay would be very proud. A very nice piece to have up front (that’s what she said).
10:14 UK just received a signed LOI from defensive end David Washington, another Georgia All-State first-teamer. He is one of the players being said to potentially be “special”. His mother thinks he already is.
10:25 Rumors now stirring that Darryl Collins will switch his verbal to UK at a 2pm press conference. It was reported earlier this week that Collins had re-committed to the Tide, but he could be joining his primary recruiter, Tee Martin, in picking the Cats over Nick Saban’s program.
10:30 Great news for UK bloggers everywhere: Theltus “Bookie” Cobbins is now officially signed. He is the nation’s 26th-ranked dual threat quarterback and played only four games as a senior due to injury. Three-star rating, five-star name.
10:38 The crown jewel is in: UK just received All-American safety Glenn Faulkner’s LOI, who can play both safety positions and potentially becomes a kinder “F” word ahead of “Winston Guy”.
10:44 Tee Martin just said UK’s motto for the spring is “Faceless and Nameless…Just Do Work.” I like it, but I don’t know how they’re going to fit it all on the back of mesh shorts.

10:49 Cats announce signing of Rashad Cunningham. He’s a 6’4 receiver who received some bigger late offers after (I’m not making this up) his play improved after getting contact lenses. The countdown until Matt calls him “Ahmad Rashad Cunningham” starts now.
11:00 Energy is fading fast. LOI from three-star running back Marcus Caffey is in. Yet another Georgia kid. Martin said he coached against him two years ago and knew he was a big time star. Called him one of the top two backs in Georgia this year.
11:01 Nine spots remaining as DJ Warren is not listed on UK’s official list but was announced by Tweet Martin.
11:12 Tweet Martin just announced that there will be a “huge announcement” coming soon regarding UK’s Signing Day. It’s a Lamar Dawson Day miracle!
11:15 Defensive end and Tennessee “Dream Team” member Christian Coleman is officially on board. He’s 6’4 and weighs 255 pounds, but doesn’t necessarily qualify as “huge”, right Coach Martin? The suspense is killing me!
11:20 UK assistant Randy Sanders says that he is “a little disappointed in the timing of Ryan’s (Mossakowksi) decision” when asked about where Max Smith is at this point. Says that the timing of Mossakowski’s transfer makes Smith’s grayshirt huge and they are pleased with him.
11:24 This diary is nice, but it’s not Alabama’s “Fax Cam”, which includes special “helpers”. Those poor girls will do anything for their national championship rings. Take a look:
11:27 Speaking of “things that make you walk funny”, Shaq Love just sent his LOI to the Cats. The defensive lineman is another three-star talent and five-star name.
11:43 UK confirms DJ Warren’s signing. Only fitting the guy named DJ gets a remix.
11:54 The great name train continues to roll with the faxing of Alvin “Bud” Dupree’s LOI. Dupree is a three-star athlete expected to play defensive end, but was projected as a tight end by some and is believed to be one of the factors in Jon Davis wavering on his UK commitment. He was also the recipient of a late offer from Florida State.
12:00 Worth noting on the Jon Davis watch: UK assistant David Turner was very vague when asked where Dupree would play, noting his multiple skills and saying, “We don’t know which side of the ball he will play yet but that is a good problem to have.”

With some luck, we’ll split the good but not great players with U of L, which is probably about right for both schools. With SC, Dawson will see the country and play in some great places. Tough to recruit against glamour programs, even when they are not currently at the top of their game.

I agree that not getting Dawson is huge, and Smith’s role needs to be re-evaluated but I think people need to pump the brakes a little bit. First of all, for those that keep wanting to compare a hoops 5 star to a football 5 star, you’re comparing apples to oranges. As of this moment Bama is said to have the top rated class and has 2 5 star players out of 22. If you look at the high profile programs vs. UK the real difference is in 4 star players. While UK’s class is based on 3 stars (which is more than we used to be able to say)if you look at a school like UGA, they have 23 guys– 1 5 star, 11 4 stars, and 11 3 stars. That’s the 7th ranked class in the country as I type this. Now, I realize all this will likely change as the day goes on, but when it comes down to it, if UK can regain the on field momentum it’s had the last few years and continue to hit the recruiting trail hard, MAYBE we’ll start to see some of our classes be a little heavier on 4 star guys which needs to be the focus. Lots of ifs, but in general I see reason for tempered optimism.

Just a little reminder…there is only ONE Five-Star High School recruit that is playing in the Super Bowl this weekend; Lamar Woodley. And Aaron Rodgers was never given a D-1 offer coming out of high school. Too much hype for kids that have never done anything.
Split the good players with Louisville??? That would be a step up Louisville currently swinging a top 20 class and possibly adding Davis. Louisville went out and spent the money to get someone who has experience and a recruiting knack. Hopefully this latest embarrassment will propel UK to do the same

For those who wonder why we will never be a top level program. Case and point…Kentucky does not produce a lot of top level talent, but when it does, we have to keep them here. I think that UK needs to move conferences, we Dont have the surrounding football talent that the southern schools do, not to mention our basketball record historically against these sec schools. If u have two teams in your conference that have running 25+ year win streaks on you its time to move on. Big Ten has better basketball competition and far less dominating football programs(as a whole conference)

Who’s seriously surprised at losing any recruits in football? I mean being in the mighty SEC only helps if you are actually a good team in it. We were not… If you look at our comments and compare those to schools we consider “lesser” in basketball that would looke eerily similer. “Do we not pay enough?” Think about Wash U this past spring when Terrence switched to us. You think they werent all over their coach for not being able to keep a “local” guy out there? Same situation. UK is just not a good football school and it won’t change, except for the possible lightning in a bottle scenario. I wish it were different but it isn’t. At least we have basketball… right?

If I was a poor young man growing up in Danville, KY and could choose between UK,UT,Oregon and USC I would probably choose USC. Look at the tradition and national titles. Live on the west coast and have sunshine year round. Get away from everything and be your own person. Smart choice.

The best football in college is in the SEC, bar none. EVERY YEAR. It’s all about level of talent, if you go elsewhere your being sold something else, or being lied to.
You’d think kids like this would learn from the OJ Mayo’s who made the same mistake. Bright lights big city sales pitch, and even with his talent realized within a semester that he wasn’t the big ticket in that town, he wasn’t even in the top 100.

I would like to move to ACC not the BE. Better elite basketball programs in UNC and PUKE and maybe a little better in football. Also, less traveling required. Don’t know if UK could make the cut acedemically but that’s my vote. Enough of this 2-6 or slightly better slightly worse in SEC play. I personally don’t care how goodhow good our conference is if we can’t share the limelight as one one of the teams that makes it so good. And in basketball we could play a home and home yearly series with UT to keep that rivalry going. That makes sense, no?
UK gets 3 stars, most other teams in the SEC get 4 and 5 stars. Sigh…..

Dawson will not survive USC. He will take his hayseed a$$ to California and he’ll get homesick and sit the bench for 2-3 years. My guess he’ll transfer after 2 years when he realizes that he won’t or can’t play at USC. He’ll come crawling back….then he can go to UL…they’ll love him there.
UK will not leave SEC. It is called revenue sharing. I am sure they have it. The only confrence I could see the Big Boo going to is Big East then maybe Big 10. Being the southern most Big Ten school or Big East school helps more then some think. As for Dawson….WOW!!! I’m not sure being a UK football fan is worth it anymore. As a side note, if the staff thinks our Newton is going to be the next Cam Newton they are sadly mistaken. I’m thinking he’s the next Shane Boyd. He doesn’t have the speed to play QB in the SEC. No wonder Moss left. Didn’t even get a warmup call in a bowl game we were losing badly. He’ll probably go somewhere and play like Case Keenum. Cobb could see the writing on the wall, too. If we are lucky enough to get a prospect like Moss and never give them a chance to play, how many five star QB’s are going to come here to play? Most school’s (like UT) go with the youth and by the end of the season they look good for next year. What did Hartline get us? Another 6-6 season and recurits leaving or bailing after a very poor bowl showing. Very sad.
Yeah I don’t see UK moving conferences anytime soon, or ever really. I loke the idea of Big Ten too, but don’t se UK making the grade acedemically there for sure. BE is most likely from that standpoint. My statement earlier was more of a wish from a fan’s perspective. Tired of dissapointment in SEC. Nothing changes.

We ARE competing in the SEC versus what we have done in the past. Give the doom and gloom a rest. You can tell by the “pikced UK over” area exactly where we are in the minds of recruits, I wil feel better if there were 5 or 6 guys that picked UK with a picked over section that included anyone better than a louisville or marshall or USF……when we start seeing kids pick UK with a picked over list of South Carolina, LSU, etc, then we have improvement.

A close friend of mine coaches at Eastern High School and is a HUGE UK fan. He is not optimistic about Jon Davis. UK having 10+ Tight Ends on the roster might be part of the issue….

Marcus Caffey is the steal of this class. If Richt doesn’t get Crowell, he will end up regretting not pursuing Caffey. Many folks in GA believe Caffey is a better back even though not as highly rated.

125 – You’re joking right? Do you think that’s how the other SEC schools feel about their basketball recruits in comparison to Kentucky? As long as we are making progress every year in our recruiting classes, we are headed in the right direction.
125 – they should be compared to the others in the conference, but compare how we used to stack up from a talent standpoint. They are getting the same level of “star” recruits while we are improving our “star” recruits. Improved recruiting, while also being competitive on the field, should yeild more wins.

I understand that we can’t have the best class. Only thing I ask is that we keep in state talent in state. That being said the 2 best players from this state are going else where. #FRUSTRATING
This recruiting class is actually shaping up pretty well. On the cusp of being ESPN top 25, full of big athletes with offers from big-time programs (Caffey, Clemons, Dupree, West, Miller, Cobbins, West, Cunningham) with still a few spaces to fill (Collins, surprises?) and some athletes that may turn out to be just what we needed at the position (Coleman, Smith, Love, Hugeunin) all sounds like the kind of improvement you want to see out of a program entering its second year with a new head coach. I, for one, am pretty satisfied with this class so far. Getting Davis would be great, and missing on Dawson was big, but so long as we don’t have to play against these guys year in and year out, the sting is less than it could have been.
It’s not looking good for Jon Davis to come here. His girlfriend seems to be holding him back. He probably won’t go to Illinois, but it looks pretty promising that he won’t be coming to Lexington either. Lets hope I am wrong and that he just likes to pull peoples legs. #WildcatsEatCardinalsEveryTime

Joker said when he took the job that we needed more TE and Def end type of guys 6-5 250 to 280 and that is what he is getting Davis should be suprised that we signed a lot of TE a lot of those guys will end up polayind Def!
I think this site itself said that if we missed on Davis and Dawson, this recruiting class could be considered catastrophic… Catastrophe is looming boys! The momentum is gone, lets all go back to basketball!
Don’t know why it is so tragic to lose Davis and Dawson. Both are very good players that would help the program, but come on, this is one of our best classes in a long time even without them. It’s not like those two guys were going to make or break this class. It only stings because they are in state guys.

Shaq Love, DE, picked UK over Duke, Vandy, Kansas and Memphis….Ironically the man with the royal basketball name pretty much lined up basketball royalty in school selection.
Guys i want better as well but to completely dog this class as a failure isn’t accurate. We have 3-4 players who are gonna be impact starters eventually and a couple players who do have the ability to be special. I agree there’s no reason an SEC school doesn’t pull at least 4-5 4 star local talents but what yea gonna do. Joker had no HC exp coming in and he made some coaching mistakes during the season but i believe hes done well with his first class and you guys know next years performance and recruiting class will be the mark at which he will be measured.
156 – I disagree, if you take a look at scout.com, we had 2 -4stars and 1 – 5star in 2006, we had 3 – 4stars in 2008 and we had 4 – 4stars in 2009. Last yr we had 1 but he was a kicker and this yr we’re looking at 2 without davis or dawson. Certainly we have fewer 2stars this yr, but personally i think you need to upgrade to 4 star guys to compete in the sec and we’re just not doing it. In state is where it starts and from what I see, Strong is cleaning house against Jokster. I wish the cats could do better but I’m a realist.
