Selection Sunday News And Brews

Well, here goes nothing. For the first time since Billy Gillispie’s first season at Kentucky, ‘Cats fans will wake up on Sunday morning with an uneasy feeling in their collective stomachs about the Wildcats chances of dancing come 6pm. Friday night was exactly what Kentucky didn’t need, but in the spirit of March Madness, the basketball gods have also granted losses to almost all of the bubble teams in crucial games this weekend, and like John Calipari has said before, there will be a lot of “F’s” that still make it in. We’ll get to how the other bubble teams did today in a minute, but I’d like to be the first to say, “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” to all of the Big Blue Nation. Just remember that even if worse-case scenarios that shall not be named occur tomorrow, there will be no shortage of beer, in all flavors and colors, to drown your sorrows in.

uk-logo According to NCAA Tournament Chair Mike Bobinski, there are about 13 teams vying for the last 2-6 spots in the Tournament, as of earlier today. Bobinski also said that “The games being played at this point are important, but not more important than what happened over the course of the season.” The NCAA recently took the Last 12 games part of the NCAA selection process out and looks like they’ll be sticking to those guns when it comes to this postseason. it will remain to be seen how much emphasis the committee will put on Nerlens Noel’s injury, but I’m sure either way we’ll find that out immediately after the selection show is over.

Ole Miss (Winner) – Ole Miss was probably the biggest (and one of few) winners today by beating Vanderbilt 64-52 to advance to tomorrow’s SEC Final against Florida. There was a Marshall Henderson sighting today for the first time since early January, as he scored 23 points for the Rebels. Marshall made some great shots today, but I still maintain that it shouldn’t be hard for a decent player to score 20 a game when they regularly take twice as many more shots as anyone else on the team. It’ll be hard for the committee to leave the Rebels out at this point.

Southern Miss (Loser) – The Eagles gave all the bubble teams a scare by taking Memphis to double OT in the Conference-USA Championship Game, but eventually fell to the Tigers 91-79. The Golden Eagles had a solid 25-9 record this season, but were 0-5 against the RPI Top 50, and their loss in the conference championship basically has them packing their bags for the NIT.

Maryland (Loser) – Maryland placed themselves back into the bubble picture on Friday after upsetting Duke in the ACC Tournament, but fell today in the Semifinals to North Carolina in a tight 79-76 loss. Maryland’s resume is boosted by their 2 wins over Duke on the season, but are only 2-9 against Top-100 RPI teams not named Duke, not a good look for an NCAA Tournament resume.

Massachusetts (Loser) – UMASS is a team that had a great chance to improve their resume with a win against VCU today, but another bubble team bites the dust, 71-62. It’s hard for me to imagine a world where the 7th place team from the A-10 gets into the tournament, especially over teams that finished 2nd and 3rd in the SEC like Ole Miss and Kentucky.

du_alabama_logoAlabama (Loser) – I believe with a win today over Florida, Alabama could’ve solidified a tournament berth based on the amount of bubble teams that have lost over the course of this weekend already, but a 15-0 second half run by Florida put Alabama, 61-51 and put them squarely back into uncertain territory come tomorrow night.

As you can see, pretty much the only teams that helped themselves as far as bubble teams go, where the ones who had already lost and were sitting at home. I hate citing “Bracketologists” who overreact to every missed shot on the court it seems like, but of Joe Lunardi’s last 4 teams in, Ole Miss was the only team that was still in their conference tournament as of today. Just my prediction, I’m saying Kentucky is in, but probably against Middle Tennessee in the First Four. Honestly, at this point I’d take it at this point. May your Sunday be stress-free and filled with glorious green beer.

What a nightmare. I just witnessed Harrell go off then Shabazz and Woods come out fired up in the PAC 12 game. I know we’ll be fine next season, but it hurts to see all these guys doing well for other teams after hearing about them so much on KSR.

No worries, been saying this for a while, this team will go down as one of the most beloved teams in UK history. The committee had their bracket last Sunday, very rarely does conference tourny’s affect the major conferences. Kentucky was in after the Florida win, and is still in, so quit your whining and support this team wherever they end up on Sunday night! Go Big blue!

    Preseason #3 in the nation.
    A roster packed with McDonald’s All-Americans
ESPN rolls into town for All-Access view of the preme program and coach.
Many consider this an historic ‘down year’ in college basketball.
A weakened schedule with Cal opting out of taking on IU and UNC.
    An extremely weak SEC conference.

And yet, here we are on Selection Sunday Eve and Wildcats will be gathered in Cal’s living room crossing their fingers hoping to hear their name called.

Is this the new Kentucky effect?

Roy… Considering conference champions receive an invite to the NCAA tourney… I really hope they (the NCAA) did not buck the system this year..just to get their work done 1 week early. Kentucky would not be in If the tourney expanded by 6 teams.. That’s the hard cold blunt truth.

Louisville vs. Syracuse. What a game. UL is a team with heart and knows how to play basketball. You have to admit Pitino has done a great job this year. Exciting team to watch, too. Louisville (Kentucky) all the way! Better than ESPN focusing on Duke and NC, but rather on the blue grass state.

    6) A National Championship last year and a Top 3 pick out with a blown knee with a month left in SEC/Tourney play? Possible best recruiting class ever next year? Get bent, poser.

#7 and #9 Louisville played lights out in the second half. Cemented themselves as a title favorite. This is what happens when a team buys in. Imagine if our group played with the same attitude-talent out the butt and team mentality. That’d be a hard team to beat. You can’t coach swag or heart though. It’s disappointing, but it’s the situation we find ourselves in. Go Cats.

These kids are awesome, but it feels like a lack of attitude/personality and the pressure we put on them has just made them implode. I love this team, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be disappointed in how they play. I’m with them all the way no matter what. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. That’s what the BBN is all about.

Just saying. This very site said:

A loss to 14-16 Vanderbilt would effectively end Kentucky’s quest for an NCAA Tournament bid. Arkansas and Vanderbilt may be similar in scoring margin type rating systems, but in the eyes of the Tournament committee, losing to the Commodores would squash all hope of a tournament bid. The RPI may not be a very effective rating system, but unfortunately, Kentucky must boost that in order to feel secure. A loss to Vanderbilt would damage that rating beyond repair.

    So… there you go.

    41. Two years ago, we were in the Final Four and the Cards lost to Morehead. Last year they nearly imploded in the regular season before making their run. One good year is not a consistently good team for them. Likewise, one bad year for us does not spell doom and gloom for the long run. Remember, they haven’t won it yet. Rick has been there over a decade and has only made 2 Final Fours, same as Cal in four years. If that’s a program we should emulate, give away any Final Four or NC gear you may have bought.

And if the right way is forcing a guy to transfer that you’ve coached for years to make room for other guys, I don’t want any part of the right way.

The problem with UL is they take one bit of success and multiply it. One good year=best team to ever exist. A 1 seed=highlight of Rick Pitino’s career. One win (out of 5) vs. UK=domination forever. They use the one good year to try to paint their entire program in the same light. The overall strength of a program comes down to success over time.

  51. Carolina Blue is past tense for CAROLINA BLOWS
    1:56 am March 17, 2013 Permalink

Been observing the past few days instead of posting. Here are a few thoughts:

Rick has done a pretty good job this year. Fun to razz him but give credit when due.

Not sure if the Cats get in but those that say the NIT should be rejected if offered are nuts. Win as many as possible, period. It provides the opportunity to add more games to winningest basketball team in NCAA history total.

There is no bigger Cal fan than me. I have followed him since Umass days and was so excited when he joined BBN. That said, he has had too many teams throughout the years that were poor at free throw shooting. That said, it has baffled me all year why there was such an effort to get to the rim. How many games would we have won if we hit free throws. Wrong guys getting to the line as well as I feel it took Alex and Harrow out of their game instead of getting into a rhythm.

We had better hope Cal is able to convince the NCAA/NBA to implement a two year rule. When he decides to hang it up at UK it will likely be after a successful season where 6-7 guys leave for the NBA thus leaving the next coach and the Cats in a tough situation. Recruits will go elsewhere and will make this years team look like a championship team compared to the couple years we will endure when Cal leaves.

Hope our boys make the tourney and make some noise. If not, I will support the team like I have every year since I was 5 and encourage everyone else to do the same.

Carry on and Go Big Blue!

    50. Rick has had multiple winning seasons with the Cards. It hasn’t just been a couple good years. Yes, there were some years that you can point out that they should have done better (like win it all) but they have good teams year after year. That’s not uncommon for them at all. Uk’s good but this style right now is not going to give them a chance every year.

52-What is wrong, or at least short-sighted and naive, is the question he(#6) posts as an (assumed) conclusion. Asking if this is the new Kentucky Effect is identical in thought process to expecting the #3 ranking in the country to begin the season, based only on previous results (last season particularly). It seems that he may have the most pessimistic conclusion to this scenario that could be held, aside from a troll/imbecile. I am not stating or even hinting that he is a troll/imbicile, but concluding that this is somehow the “new norm” is a bit ridiculous, and overreaching conjecture. Nothing else he said is even mildly wrong, IMO.

Willie Cauley Stein has vocally blamed the fans, twitter, the pressure, the clerk at BP, and the new Pope for why this team can’t produce.

Even though Willie has shown more effort ‘on the court’ than Poythress, Harrow, Wiltjer… his vocal support of the complaints his teammates have come out with justifies themselves in not being responsible for their position.

He’s enabling mediocrity. Leaders lead by example and when they hear whiners blaming things (take your pick) they put their focus back on track.

If you don’t get it, then stick around a while and you’ll learn in life what separates the winners from the losers.

    64) I will stop when I feel it’s time to stop. Ego much? If you can’t identify the difference between intelligence and experience than I agree with you. It’s best that you just stay out of the argument. Was Kenny Walker a leader as a Freshman. Maybe you can answer the question the second time? By the way, great logic on telling me Walker is beyond comparison, but apparently Mashburn is fair game. lol

Here is the thing, I really hope that UK makes the dance but if they are going to get blown out in their first game (play-in probably) then what is the use. Same thing for the NIT, even as a 1 seed, if they get blown out in their opening game, what is the use. I am just afraid that this team has quit on Cal and Cal also seems to have resigned himself. Thus, it might be better for all to end the season now and start focusing on next year. Of course, I am still hoping they make the NCAA and go on a VCU run.

So strange to me that UofSmell and the even less relevant in the past decade Hoosiers are patting themselves on the back calling an Elite 8, Final Four, and National Championship in the first 3 years a system that doesn’t work.

Using your standards tell me how you feel your programs “system” is working. IU is trying so hard to find anything within their program that is relevant that they hand out sweet sixteen rings and UofSmell has had 1 team with a chance at being relevant since the 80’s

Note to Oldschool,,,,you guys have been building up this Louisville team as national champs all year. What happens when you don’t win it all ? Siva will get color blind,,,you will run into refs that will not let Louisville guards foul the way they get away with in the Big Least,,someone will finally call three seconds on your center and enjoy the ACC after your coach railed other teams for leaving the Big Least. After you get beat ,, come on back and comment on this site,,,,we will wait for you.

My biggest fear is the cards get the overall 1 seed. They will then be able to play in Lexington and Indy, which could be 4 home games. It also puts them on the same side of the bracket as the Zags, who they will destroy. Their 2 seed will likely be OSU or New Mexico. State. This could set up for a cake walk for the dirty birds.

Get real UK fans. We all know this has been likely the most frustrating Uk team ever. I have myself been down on them as much as anyone. I want to make some apologies at this time. To Archie who I once called a cancer to this team I was wrong, as I can see your own disappointment and how much you want to be a winner. Stay another year , you can only get better playing against the best players in college everyday in practice.
To Alex I apologize. Your a bomb waiting to explode on someone and you seem to restrain yourself too often. I say stay and learn and you will be the beast everyone sees in you.
To Willy who I once said had no basketball skills I apologize. You have proved me wrong these last few weeks. You are growing better every game. You have a chance to be the best big man in college next year, stay and be that guy and win a championship.
To Ryan I apologize. You have maybe disappointed us all more than anyone but you tried and what else can anyone want. I think this arena of basketball is more than you can handle and maybe a move to a small college would be best for you to finish your basketball days.
These are the guys I criticized the most. Team play, team chemistry, and team work ethic make champions and we Cat fans didn’t see this often this year. Great games against Missouri, and Florida for wins showed what your capable of. Close losses to Duke and Louisville showed what promise you had for the year. In all this season you as a team came close to being really good but failed when it counted. If by a miracle you make it to the tournament play as a team, practice as a team, and work your asses off on the floor of play leaving nothing behind to be ashamed of. BBN does love it’s teams more than any school in the nation and we seek the effort on the floor to deserve this loyalty.
To Nerlens Noel big guy you got it from the beginning. You carved UK in your head and you played UK ball every game. Your a great guy and hope nothing but a wonderful future for you in the NBA. BBN will hold you in the highest regard forever as you are UK.
