SEC Tournament Blog: And So it Begins (1 PM)

The day has is finally here and the fun has begun. The SEC Tournament has gotten underway in front of literally dozens of people. In all of my years of coming to this tournament, I have never seen a worse crowd to begin the Thursday session. Whereas it is always sporadic and South Carolina is ALWAYS playing in this first session, the turnout today is beyond low. As always there are more Kentucky fans than anyone else here, but the number of Tennessee fans is dangerously high. Lots of orange in and around the Georgia Dome, including in my group as Macon Vol Fan and Payne are sporting it bright. Payne of course showed up with a gimp ankle, which means he is hopping around, slowing us down and making us move at the pace of a Rob Bromley on-air insight. The only thing smaller than the number of actual fans here is the number of actual media, allowing me a prime location to spout out my nonsense. So far in the first two minutes in the building, I saw Jerry Tipton and Dave Baker, proving that this will indeed be a very good event.

There are also many familiar faces from tournaments past in attendance. The first person I ran into was of course Kenny Walker, looking sharp, shaking hands and wearing his white spandex hanging out of his shorts for old times. We saw Barry Booker, who immediately asked, “When do the Top 10 moments come out?” and I told him to check the blog throughout the day when he can break away from the logjam of “Daves” on the JP/Lincoln Financial/Raycom network. I also ran into the crazy Security guy that some of you may remember from SEC Tournaments past….still with his hair spiked and the look of pure aggression in his eyes. At this point, the day looks to be off to a great start. The only thing that makes me somewhat sad is the pitiful face of Dave Odom. From the looks of the crowd, only Odom’s close and personal friends decided to make the trip from South Carolina for the game…thus ensuring that Odom’s last game as a coach will be sad and somewhat embarassing. Over the years, making fun of Odom and noticing his resemblance to the Gamecock mascot has been one of my favorite endeavors….hate to see it end this way.

Well the media hordes are running to the table as they just brought out a new batch of oatmeal cookies so this may be a good time to stop….check in again at 2.
