The apology is way more offensive than the original statement. As a former Cat, he is “entitled” to his opinion about what a Cat should be. I really have no problem with that, though I may disagree with him.

    But…

    1. He wasn’t speaking of youth in general…it was very specific to UK. That is a lie.
    2. The use of “entitlement” is a very poor choice. How can you come up with that word when they are taking money for a charity? Are they entitled to collect money? I don’t get that.

Tempest in a teapot. I bet Cal tries to sell the kids he recruits that they will be very special (=entitled) if they come to UK. They will be treated as celebrities and gods. so let’s put these comments into context:
sean woods says UK’s current players “didn’t seem like Kentucky basketball players to me;” they should “not have such a sense of entitlement,” and “should be more appreciative coming through here wearing that uniform…”
he made these comments while the players were at a telethon. that they had to attend and help with.
once again, sean woods attacked the players’ integrity & character while they ere at a telethon when he had never met them before.

#52, I think UK dropped a little further because we also had a weak (but winning) performance against Maryland. Voters are wondering about Harrow and how we will adapt without him if he doesn’t come back soon. I think it will make us a stronger team in the long haul, but there are legit questions right now…

  61. RealCatsFan
    3:13 pm November 19, 2012 Permalink

#52, I’m not at all surprised, and I echo some of what #60 said. I don’t think many of us expected this team to stay in the top 3 all year. I for one expected us to take a few losses in the pre-conference part of the season, and I also expect this team to drop a few in SEC play. It is a learning experience, and this team will be a lot more like the 2011 team than last years’. Expect for them to fly under the radar a bit towards the latter part of the season, and I wouldn’t be surprised for them to drop down in the 15 – 20 part of the rankings for a while. If they finish out strong like the 2011 Cats, I will be more than satisfied.

Hopefully the Harrow situation will sort itself out soon.

Those of you throwing Sean Woods under the bus don’t quite get it. I think everyone knows what he meant to say and honestly shouldn’t have a problem with his comments. It’s not bulletin board material.

I think most UK teams in the past played for the name on the front of the jersey and a lot of them now play for the name on the back of the jersey. Thats not true in every case, becasue I do think people like Polson and Beckham are playing for UK. However, most of the one and done mentality of today’s generation isn’t as concerned about UK as they are about CAL. We embrace them because they are CATS and they are talented, but its a lot different than how UK basketball used to be.

Anyone that boos Sean Woods when he comes into Rupp isn’t a bleed-blue fan. He was one of our own, and sometimes people say things that they regret and/or others don’t agree with. Let it slide, that’s what being a family is all about.

  71. rich

you dont think AD, MKG and Darius played for the name on the front of the jersey? Or are you solely referencing this team? This team which is three games into the season and you’ve already cast them off as selfish? Nerlens hasn’t stopped talking about bringing #9 to Kentucky since he committed. Maybe as a supposed UK fan you should not be so quick to judge our 18 year old players.

  72. DC4UK
    3:48 pm November 19, 2012 Permalink

#64 Yeah just guessing here but I’d say 75% of college players play for who the coach is not the name on the front. Still think being a blue blood helps Uk get some players though. Do you think kids at Indiana play for the school or for Crean?

  73. putinrichie
    3:52 pm November 19, 2012 Permalink

66 – Disagree. Here’s why: I love CAL and what he’s done for the program. I wouldn’t trade him for any coach in the country and celebrate every high profile recruit he gets.

However, people would be lying if they didn’t admit that UK basketball pre-CAL and UK basketball with CAL are two completely different animals. I’m not saying the old way was better, but the old way was a lot more personal and a lot more about Kentucky. Now its more about getting to the NBA as fast as possible. I think the goal of the student athlete was the same 10 years ago as it is now. The big difference is that 10 years ago you would have 8 high school players go in the draft. A lot of these guys that CAL gets like John Wall, Cousins, MKG, Anthony Davis, and Nerlens Noel would all have gone pro straight out of high school. The one-and-done culture forces guys who are lottery picks out of high school to play college ball for a year and CAL has capitalized on that.

  74. putinrichie
    3:54 pm November 19, 2012 Permalink

Just to be clear, I don’t think that is a bad thing at all, but people would be lying if they say that the UK jersey means the same to a one-and-done kid as it does to someone like one of the Unforgettables. Pelphrey, Woods, Feldhaus, and I bet even Mashburn would say the exact same thing that Woods did. It doesn’t make them wrong. Its just a different time.

    73) I don’t much disagreement. I agree. College hoops has changed, and Cal is the undisputed king of today’s system. Just because today’s players don’t stay longer, doesn’t make it less personal- fans have to change with the times though. I disagree with many of the old farts, who like Woods continue to show they don’t get it. Leaving after one year doesn’t mean you don’t love UK, your team mates, or the fans. UK fans can now tune into virtually any NBA game and get to see at least one former Cat playing. That’s new. I think that’s better for us as fans and the future of the program. Even in the ye’ olden days, that was never the case. My only point was that people who say let Woods say anything simply because he used to play for Kentucky should examine the content of his statements instead of who said it.

BTW – I bet Jamal Mashburn knew all about UK basketball when he arrived on campus. And as much as I love the Unforgettables and what they did…we never would have been in that game without Mashburn.

Also, just because Sean or anyone else is a UK legend doesn’t mean they can go around and bad mouth our current players and not expect the fans to resist.
