Sean Woods’ Entrance Exam For Kentucky Basketball

Sean Woods thinks kids today don’t get it.

“They play basketball but they don’t know what basketball really is,” he said during a media teleconference this morning.  “I think my generation… my class and maybe four, five years after that, anything after that, these kids don’t know anything.

To me, it sounds like Woods is butt-hurt over today’s Wildcats not knowing anything about The Unforgettables.  Because they don’t.  So, in order to prevent all future Wildcats from putting off bad vibes at charity events with former players, KSR thinks UK should require the Sean Woods’ entrance exam for Kentucky basketball.  I’m sure an 18-year-old Sean Woods knew everything about Jim Andrews and Jimmy Dan Conner when he first arrived on campus, and we need to get back to those days.  No more video games.  Strictly knowledge.  UK basketball knowledge.

Here is an example of a simple 10-question exam the nation’s top recruits should pass before enrolling at Kentucky:

1.)  The four seniors on the 1991-92 Kentucky men’s basketball team are known as:

a.  Post-Probation Incorporated
b.  Guard-The-Inbounds
c.  “The Unforgettables”
d.  Kentucky Proud

2.)  Sean Woods scored in double-figures in ____ of Kentucky’s 36 games his senior season.

a.  12
b.  13
c.  14
d.  15

3.)  What three teams did the 1991-1992 Wildcats defeat en route to the regional final?

a.  Old Dominion, Iowa State, UMass
b.  BYU, Missouri, Illinois
c.  Winthrop, Georgia Tech, Syracuse
d.  Dayton, NC State, Pittsburgh

4.)  Which Wildcat scored 21 points, including a 10 ft. floater over Christian Laettner with 2.1 seconds to go, in the 1992 Elite Eight?

a.  Jamal Mashburn
b.  Deron Feldhaus
c.  Sean Woods
d.  Herb Sendek

5.)  On Dec. 28, 1991, Louisville’s James Brewer tossed which UK senior to the ground?

a.  Sean Woods
b.  Deron Feldhaus
c.  Richie Farmer
d.  John Pelphrey

6.)  ___________ is the only Wildcat to be ejected from his Senior Day game for fighting.

a.  Sean Woods
b.  Jamaal Magloire
c.  Alex Groza
d.  Mark Krebs

7.)  In 1990, Bernadette Locke-Mattox became the first ___________.

a.  Woman to walk on to the UK men’s basketball team
b.  Female assistant coach at a major basketball program
c.  British gun manufacturer to buy ad space in Rupp Arena
d.  Law firm in Letcher County

8.)  The four members of the 1992 senior class wore what jersey numbers?

a.  11, 12, 32, 33
b.  11, 22, 24, 34
c.  11, 13, 30, 33
d.  11, 12, 32, 34

9.)  Which current ESPN NBA analyst played at Kentucky with Sean Woods?

a.  Jeff Van Gundy
b.  Magic Johnson
c.  Jamal Mashburn
d.  Doris Burke

10.)  Why don’t you know more about the history of Kentucky basketball?

a.  I’m not from Kentucky.
b.  I’m 18 years old.
c.  I’ve spent most of my life playing my own basketball.
d.  All of the above.

Kids these days don’t know enough!!!!

Lame. Sean – you screwed up and now you’re trying to back track.

I see Sean Wood like the Uncle Drew parody. He just runs around in Morehead calling everyone under 35 “young bloods” because in his day “they wore Shooorts”

Why would you expect any 18 year old kid from another state to know the history
of UK basketball pre Calipari?? It aint gonna happen

Disagree. Guys, this is Sean Woods. He and the rest of the Unforgettables get a pass on pretty much anything (ok, except maybe Richie Farmer). Cut the guy some slack.

Nothimg wrong with Sean’s statements. He has pride in being a former UK basketball player (which is great since he is from that state north of us that thinks they have more basketball tradition) and he is giving his honest opinion as a coach.

No matter what Sean’s opinion is, you have to give Cal credit for linking UK’s past with its future. The way he gets legends from the past involved is just awesome, and I bet that rubs off on some of the players as the year goes on. Maybe Sean should talk to these kids at the end of the season to see if they seem any more like “Kentucky players”.

Why is it that Christian Laettner is acting better these days than some of our own guys from that 92 team (ie Farmer, Woods)?

Nope, he gets no slack from me. I’m older than most of you, love Coach Cal, love the kids, love where the program is and where it’s headed. It was a crappy thing to say, it was personal and he deserves the “unforgettable” beatdown he’s about to get. Go Cats!

Can we please stop using terms like butt-hurt. It makes your writing seem stupid, and to call Sean Woods butt-hurt for expressing his opinion makes me think that you Drew are the truly Butt-hurt individual. You can state your opinion in any fashion you see fit, but as soon as someone else says anything about Kentucky Basketball they are Butt-Hurt or salty please for everyone’s sake at least try and use the English language the way it was intended.

    12. if the only thing said by KSR was this post, then im with you, but, this is like the 3rd post and Matt is out there tweeting about how much he disagrees with Sean blah blah blah, Tyler out there spouting off on twitter when she doesnt know anything about the situation, its not a news story, its just been blown out of proportion by Matt and KSR. Quit pounding a wedge between past and present UK players. We have Tipton for that.

I am with KSR on this one. No need for Sean Woods to have comments on this year’s UK team. You cant judge the character of teenagers today against teenagers of his era. And there is absolutely no real reason that these kids should know anything about the history of UK until they are immersed in it. So in my book, the kids get a pass, and Sean looks tacky for calling them out publicly

Listen folks, Sean was out of line. And his apology was worse. You can give him a pass if you want to, but the only people making a “big” deal out of it is you.

You see, KSR is having some fun with it right now, and it would most likely be forgotten in a week. But by throwing such a fuss over people’s reactions you are polarizing the fanbase. If you don’t think it was a big deal, and you truly don’t want it to, then just let it go. KSR will move on, with only the occasional Richie Farmer/Sean Woods joke.

Sean Woods, as a former Cat and a Kentucky alum, is entitled to offer his assessment of the current players. Has a retired jersey and member of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, something Cal’s players will never have. In fact, Mr. Woods was with the program longer than Cal has. Wish some of the crew here would be a little more reasoned and objective and not be such blind cheerleaders with petty insults.

Woods thinks he will be a Coach as long as he is Pitino’s “B_ _ _H.”

Don’t get me wrong, whenever KET plays the history of UK bball I park it on the couch, but am I more concerned with attracting recruits that respect the jerseys on the long side of the rafters, or ones that add banners to the short side…? it’s no contest. So even if it only makes .001% difference in their decision, we or any other alumni could all sleep slightly better knowing we contribute the image of a fanbase in touch with reality, not one that lectures on respecting the past.
