SDS agrees, Western Kentucky is Kentucky’s most important game this season

Western-Kentucky-University

We’ve talked a lot about how important it is for Mark Stoops and the Cats to get off to a good start in the 2013 football season. Recruiting success is great, but carrying that momentum through to the season with a big win is crucial. Saturday Down South agrees. In a piece examining each SEC East team’s most important games this season, Jon Cooper says it’s huge for the Cats to beat Bobby Petrino and get that all-important first “W”:

Kentucky

Game: Western Kentucky, week 1
Buzz: For Kentucky, it’s all about getting the Mark Stoops era under way and getting some more positive momentum as the season opens. Let’s face it, Kentucky’s schedule is so brutal that they could win only one or two more games than last season, and it would be a big improvement. So, it’s very important to beat the Hilltoppers and Bobby Petrino in week one.

Beat. Western.

Agree, the WKU game is huge.UK will be tested on both sides of the line. However,i believe Stoops will have his team playing like an SEC team, and not the pathetic team we witnessed last year.

western beat us on a trick play at end of a horrible game coached by a horrible joker. Wait and see if we don’t win by 20

@niaps: You are forgetting that Petrino is coaching WKU now…

    4) Petrino will help WKU but it’s mostly about “Jimmy’s and Joe’s” and not “X’s and O’s.” UK still has much better overall talent than the ‘toppers and Stoops and staff may very well be the equal of or surpass Petrino in game coaching.

What is that big red thing, anyway? Is it supposed to be a grossly enlarged human heart or something? Would be a good mascot for the American Heart Association.

Does anyone else hate the idea of Western being a football rival? I know we’re bad but we’re not that bad. We should stop scheduling them.

    11. It’s mainly all the western and loserville fans that are trying to blow this into a rivilary. ul and wku whole mantra is hey we beat you that one time so now we are competition to you ( I swear that is ul’s whole philosophy and design as a program). Trust me after Labor Day you’ll need not worry about western UK and rivialary ever being used in the same sentence anymore.

Niaps, you and many others like to state that WKU beat UK on a trick play. Yes, the final play was a a well executed trick play. However, many seem to forget that WKU dominated the game and led the ENTIRE game until the last 30 seconds–UK never led in regulation. Likewise, WKU was in the Red zone two more times and scored EVERY time in it. UK did not. So, seriously, get your head out of your blue sandbox and just realize that WKU was the better team last year. If you watched the WKU v Bama game you would also know that no team outside of UGA had better defense against Bama. At least Bama fans acknowlege that WKU shocked them–even though the score didn’t reflect it.

We need to take the blue goggles off and realize this is not going to be a cakewalk. If UK goes into the game thinking it will win…then it will lose. Respecting an opponent is the first thing any team should do.

For the record, in every report out so far, WKU is ranked ahead of UK this year. Just sayin….

Unfortunately, WKU will NOT be an easy game this year. And the artical is correct, it is a HUGE game for UK and the pressure is on UK to win it. Losing to WKU twice in a row is not something the program needs when rebuilding. Granted, this will be last year WKU will have a shot of beating us…need to beat them this year. After this year it should not be an issue.

Bwahahahaha. Now Stoops is a better coach than Bobby Petrino. He hasnt even coached a single game of college football yet he’s better than a veteran who has had success everywhere he’s been AND he was brought to the NFL from the college game. You idiots are freakin INSANE. UK may beat Western but Stoops will NEVER, I repeat NEVER be in the coaching class of Bobby Petrino.

Stoops is 46 years old and has coached exactly ZERO college or NFL games and only has two short stints as a DC at Arizona & FSU. Petrino is an ancient 51 years old and is going into his 9th year as a head coach, compiling a 75-26 college record during that time. Not to mention he was the OC at UL, Auburn, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He has a minimum of 10 years of success to earn to even be in the same conversation as Bobby Petrino.

USA TODAY is doing a countdown too. UK was 101. So far, the paper is at 81 and still no WKU….Time to take the blue goggles off and start being a bit more humble friends. Time is on UK’s side….The Cats are going to be great….just give it time.

I think this is WKUs game to lose. Truly. After this year, I think UK would be a favorite, maybe. Unfortunately, this season is the last time we schedule WKU probably for a very long time. Before WKU became a better football program, there were talks about negotiating a series extension. But now that we are the football underdogs, talks stopped and our athletic department walked away with their tails between their legs and decided to not extend the series after this year.
So basically, WKU will probably hold the title of beating UK two years in a row, and we may never get a shot at beating Western again for a long, long time.

Also, I’m sick of seeing fellow UK fans talk about how “WKU beat us in OT on a lucky trick play.” Yeah, sure, you’re technically right. But let’s not forget WKU bent us over the entire game, and was up 17-0 at one point. If they didn’t take their foot off the pedal at the half, the score would have been something ugly.

    21. Apparently just because I’m being reasonable means I’m not a UK fan. The fact that you refuse to listen to anything logical about UK just goes to show why people come on these boards just to bash us. I’d love to see a day where it’s possible for fans to look at this objectively and not be scolded for it.

    22. Reasonable is one thing. I pray you really aren’t a UK fan because you sound so whiny and fearful. “After this year UK will be a fav maybe”. Guess what dumba$$ were a fav. THIS YEAR!! You need to realize when they beat us last year UK football was at an ALL time low. Unless you live under a rock you know things have changed for the better. You sound sooo insecure, so pull you panties out of your butt and get behind this team.
