Well…that season was different…I really need Randle to come to UK because I’ve been telling people we’re winning it next year. But I’m glad no matter what, we will have a lot more depth next year. I loved Jorts tweet during the game quoting Billy Gillispie…which reminds me, it’s now been atleast 430 days since Matt first mentioned the Uncensored Billy Gillispie Podcast!
It’s the first day of spring… it’s bring and sunny outside, so hopefully UK basketball outlook will be the same today at noon.

I just posted this to the last thread, but…
I dont know how much to read into this, but a friend of mine in Ashland plays on an AAU team with a kid whos parents host Andrew Wiggins. He hungout with him last week and Andrew told my friend he wasnt coming to UK. He didnt want to get lost in a system and be a role player, but wants to avergae 30 points and be the go-to guy on his team. (Come on down FSU). So Randle might be the last piece we get to add to next years puzzle.
That loss is on the athletic department for making us play an away game.

We always say it is sometimes good to get a loss to bring a team back down to earth i.e. last years team when they lost to Vandy and the steam rolled the tourny field on their way to #8. Could this be along the same lines for coach Cal? This may have been what he needed to bring things back down to earth and get next years team ready to slaughter teams. Just my take.

As bad as UK fans don’t want to admit it, last night was probably the best thing that could have happened for UK. For us fans it gave us a heavy dose of humble pie. We learned last night that under Coach Cal everything is not candies and rainbows and that not everyone buys into his system immediately. This almost ensures that everyone comes back. Let them sit this entire off season with that taste in their mouth. This was also good for incoming recruits. Now they know what can happen and have seen it first-hand. If you come in and don’t hold up your end of the bargain there is no guarantee that you were going to have a final 4 or national championship bestowed up on you. And last but not least this was good for Coach Cal. He knows now that he does need a couple returning players and that he needs to fill out his roster so if someone big goes down we have the ample amount of players to still achieve what we want to achieve. As Far as the Pro’s are concerned:
Willie Cauley Stein — If he cannot hold his post position against a 6’7 guy on Robert Morris, his ass doesn’t need to be in the pro’s, I don’t care how bad his family needs money.
Ryan Harrow/Archie Goodwin- If you cannot handle the pressure Robert Morris’ guards put on you, you are a long way from going Pro.
Alex Poythress- If you cannot impose your will against whoever is guarding you on Robert Morris, you are a long way from going pro.

Thankfully that debacle happened in the first round of the NIT and not the first round of the NCAA. Otherwise we’d have to relive that loss during every tournament promo for the next 20 years.

I have to blame Cal’s lack of being able to bench coach. I saw at least 3 times where Cal needed to make an in-game adjustment and didn’t.
Even last year I was worried about nto having a bench. I am glad we will have a more full roster from here on.
17, even Nerlens could benefit from having another year in college to rehab at his own pace while working on his FT shooting and his offensive moves. Also would be a good chance for him to really hit the weights and add some bulk. But I realize with the weak draft, if he is still projected in the top 3 or 5, he needs to do what is best for him, which probably means go to the NBA.
Does Brian Long and Ryan battle it out for the last spot next year?
Matt keeps saying, “We’re going to have plenty of room for everyone, plenty of scholarships for everyone, don’t worry about it, we’ll be fine…etc.” I would like to hear a break down of how he thinks this is so when everyone last night with the exception of WCS said they were for sure coming back. Also Matt, where the hell is Harrow going if you’re so certain he won’t be back?
Ryan Harrow’s babyness was a cancer that infected the entire team.
Another lesson needs to be that we should always opt out of the NIT before every season. NIT will always end in a disaster with the players we have year in and year out – there is simply no desire to play in such games.
I’m assuming we have commenced the annual tradition of designating a nickname for the team? Cal got a head start…

Seeing that other players are getting treated differently ABSOLUTELY affects the entire team. I was on some terrible teams in high school that had serious chemistry issues, and that was a huge problem.

I gotta say, I agree with Matt and them about the Hawkins kid. He is a winner with a killer streak. I watched all those Sweet 16 games and he is a has the drive you need.
So glad to here that Cal will work on having a bigger bench next year. He has been lucky the past few years with only playing 6 guys. Hijacking the program, meant his players didn’t have to do what he wanted them to do because there was no one else competing for their spot.

You know, I wonder how coach K or any other coach would have handled a team like this? After basically losing 6 starters and noel; could anyone got 21 wins?? Anyway, I know and understand different opinions but all in all we had players that didnt buy in from the get and that killed our chemistry as the year went on. But does anyone know what time Randle is going to announce? Is it at noon?

Not to ruffle the feathers, but the hijacker(s) may not be who most fans think. In terms of poor attitude, poor work ethic and the inability to use the bench as a training tool…look no further than Kyle Wiltjer.
Ryan Harrow has some emotional issues, which can be, and were distracting this season. Poythress was overwhelmed by the spotlight. Archie tried to do to much because he cares so much. Wiltjer was identified throughout the season as a guy who needed to work harder, needed to “transform” into a leader, needed to focus. Stories from inside the team allude to the fact Kyle blatantly ignored or brushed off a lot of what Cal had to say. That had an effect on the other players. Just sayin.

The game reminded me of the Rocky storyline. Rocky, after defeating Apollo Creed in Rocky II catapulted to stardom. He had the title, he had money, he had Adrian (well, that sort of breaks down…). All the way to the peak in Rocky IV against Ivan Drago. Rocky is on top (2012 title). Then comes Rocky V. Tommy Morrison. Nerlens Injury. He loses everything. No NCAA bid. He street fights with Tommy. Losing in the NIT in a tiny gym to Robert Morris. But at least there was a new movie coming (Rocky Balboa)…or Julius Randle and the 2013 class. The hero can’t be left on the mat. Rocky (UK) will get back up and be champ again. He is Rocky. #weareUK.

The play that summed this season up:
1) Polson drives to basket, RM player guarding Poythress slides over, Polson throws ball where Poythress SHOULD be and Poythress is standing out near the 3pt line
2) Hood subs in for Poythress… Mays drives to hole, Hoods man helps, hood uses his BASKETBALL IQ to cut to the open area and gets the layup.
The Basketball IQ just wasnt there…

For those that keep saying that Cal threw the “kids” under the bus, you keep using that phrase, I don’t think it means what you think it means.
I wouldn’t count my chickens on who is or isn’t coming back just yet. MKG left the door open late last year before coming back down to earth and realizing what was truly out there. This year’s draft is horrible and some of these guys may never get a shot again at what’s available this year. WCS has played his way into late lottery consideration, Goodwin and Poythress are still being viewed as 1st rounders, and Noel is Top5 pick with crutches. Our incoming roster as presently constructed will also probably drop these guys in the 2014 draft. Goodwin isn’t going to avg 14 points a game next year with weapons at every position, much less Young and Harrison getting SG mins.
Let’s also not forget that the Coach is ultimately the one to make the roster decisions. Some of these guys may not be good enough to go pro, but that doesn’t mean that Cal wants them back. Saying the team was almost hijacked is a pretty steep claim. He may just eliminate anyone he views as expendable, and I’m not even taking into account the athletic ability of said individuals. This is the first team that had no swagger to it, and I’m not sure he’ll want passivity to be surrounding the new crop of guys.
Here’s how you get better at playing hard: PRactice against Julius Randle and have him trying to beat you out of your position.

Regardless of where we, as BBN members fall on the political spectrum; we must admit that Chester never fails to give us ponder-worthy points. Wish I could muster Chester’s unflagging enthusiasm for all things Blue….and I REALLY wish we could blame our tournament abscence on ANY political ideology, but I fear the truth is much less complicated.

I don’t know Cal personally, but from watching him, I would say he is pissed. Epically pissed. Not only did he go from a streak of Elite Eights to getting bounced in the NIT, but through a freak series of events, the culmination of this embarassment happened IN HIS HOMETOWN.
No one knows what the future holds, but I bet he’s thinking, “I’m not retiring until I get two more championships and erase from everyone’s memory this game and this season.”

I went to UK when Gerald and Keith played for us. My roomate dated Gerald and the only person that he was ever hanging out with, from the team, was Kelenna. Outside of basketball, I never saw him with a group of the players.

Yesterday in Kenner La. restaurant I sat across from a guy wearing diamond studs in both ears, clear lense Ray-Bans, and a Kansas Jayhawk cap. He was dining with his family. I googled Randle’s picture and it was not him. Or was it?
Did anybody else hear one of the announcers last night slam UK fans? Somebody from the crowd threw something on the floor and he said: Who’s to say a UK fan didn’t put on a Robert Morris shirt and throw something on the floor?
I think our RM loss was more embarrassing for the fans than UL’s Morehead loss, but UL’s loss was more damaging in that it prevented a potential NCAA run.
I vote yes, Small Nutz just can’t call. I’m about to the point where I turn KSR when this moron gets a platform for his schtick.
UL’s loss was way worse, I am relieved this season is over and I think a lot of fans feel this way. I have to credit Cal for getting as many wins as he did out of this team. I am surprised UK won any SEC road games.

Anyone think Rock Oliver might be up for evaluation during the off-season? The recent implementation of new technology and the new stuff being used with the football team could spell the end of days for ol’ Rock. Some guys barely seem to be hitting the gym and the comments from the RMU coach about how the team didn’t look as tough or muscular as he expected seem to indicate something about the overall conditioning of the program.
My 09 NIT Team would have whipped this teams tail.

NIT LOSS: BEST RECRUITING MOVE EVER!!!! Now all the heralded freshmen coming in have lowered expectations and get to be the saviors of the program just like AD and John Wall. On top of just being at the best program ever, you can sell Randle and Wiggins on the fact that they are the guys to recapture the glory!
Last night during is post-game interview with Tom Leach, Cal said that a couple of players were “done” and had “played their last game” (presumably as Wildcats). My wife and I understood him to mean he is kicking at least one if not two guys off the team. I haven’t heard anyone else talk about this. Did I hear him incorrectly?

Matt, just like UK fans, there are plenty of UL fans out there who are fine people. Some of my best friends are UL fans – my father is a UL fan. Likewise, I have a few friends who are fellow UK fans who I can say are pretty intolerable to be around when UK loses.
