Saying farewell to AJ Stewart

Lost in a bit of the shuffle of Tiptongate, Slonegate, and Apologygate yesterday was the long-expected departure of AJ Stewart from the Kentucky program. I count myself among the many people that loved AJ, and believe that in the right situation he could have thrived, but he was in a tough position from the start. Signed by Tubby before he bolted for colder pastures, Stewart decided to honor his commitment (who wouldn’t?) and seemingly was ready to be a part of the revival of the program when Gillispie took over. Gillispie turned out to be, how do we put this nicely, not what we expected, and AJ seemed to be at odds with our now departed head coach from the beginning. His laid back style and Gillispie’s asshole business only approach could not have been more opposite, and that cat and Paula Abdul apparently couldn’t have been more full of bunk.

Alas, the Kentucky experience did not work out as planned for AJ, and we certainly wish him the best of fortunes wherever he goes. While his athletic ability was always evident, for whatever reason things never completely came together on the court for him. Still, he remained a great teammate and is one of the funniest guys to put on the uniform in the last few years. The story about the team meeting with Clyde will always make me laugh, and wherever life may take him, AJ Stewart will be a Wildcat and for that we will love him forever, or should I say, long as I live…
