Randall Cobb Is Amazing Saturday Night Notes

Miss you...

Randall Cobb played in his first preseason game tonight against Chris Matthews and the Browns. Cobb’s first NFL touch was a nice 31 yard kick return and it just got better from there. He finished with three catches for 60 yards and two kick returns for 58 yards. Matthews got some time, but didn’t record a catch. The commentators were going on and on about what a great player Cobb is and how excited the Packers are to have him on the roster. They also said that Charles Woodson mentioned him as the rookie on the roster to look out for, going so far as to compare him to Greg Jennings. In other former Cat news…

– Tim Masthay punted well for the Pack kicking five times and averaging 52.2 yards per attempt.

– Jacob Tamme had a catch for 11 yards in the Colts game against the Rams.

– Stevie Johnson had three catches for 15 yard in the Bills game against the Bears.

– Mike Hartline got in on the last drive and threw two incomplete passes for the Colts.

Conference realignment news:

– Blah, blah, blah. There’s not going to be anything solid until after the weekend. We’ve done the speculation and rumor thing. Now we’ll just play the waiting game. Go read Matt’s post.

Scrimmage notes:

– UK played a closed scrimmage today, but a few coaches and players were available for interviews afterward. Here is some video of Joker’s comments after the scrimmage as well as Rick Minter’s comments and Morgan Newton’s from John Clay.

– Morgan Newton played well, but the receivers still aren’t where the coaching staff wants them to be, especially regarding their timing with Newton.

Josh Clemons looked good and Marcus ‘Rocko’ Caffey sustained an hamstring injury this week, but it’s nothing too serious.

– Three starting offensive linemen (Chandler Burden, Matt Smith and Stuart Hines) were out for the scrimmage. Danny Trevathan also missed some time, but it wasn’t for anything serious.

– Matt May of Catspause talked to Randy Sanders who said of back up quarterback Max Smith that he ‘probably hates me’ for all that he’s been getting on him this summer. Smith will need to be coached up in a hurry in case anything were to happen to Morgan Newton.

A couple basketball notes:

– Jason King from Yahoo Sports released his top ten players in the SEC and Wildcats comprise 40% of the list. Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Doron Lamb were all mentioned by King. In addition, Darius Miller and Marquis Teague were listed as players outside the top ten, but still worthy of recognition.

– Rivals released their 2011 Summer Circuit All-Star team and, not surprisingly, some UK recruits made the first and second team. Shabazz Muhammad, Andre Drummond and Mitch McGary were on the first team, while the second team was comprised of Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Jabari Parker, Julius Randle and Nerlens Noel.

Some campus visits today:

– Derek Willis was on campus with his father, Del, today. Del had previously been quoted saying that he didn’t fully trust John Calipari, of course this is when his son was still committed to Purdue. Now that Derek is looking for UK offer again, his father has had an eye-opening experience and he loves Coach Cal. Good call, dad.

– I have to start this note with an apology, guys. When I heard that Alex Poythress was taking an unofficial visit today, I was confident that he’d commit and be our first member of the class of 2012. I was so confident that I went ahead and wrote up a post so I could put it up on the site right after I got the happy news. However, all I got was this:

I was so sure.

So I’m sorry, guys. I jinxed it. If it makes you feel better, it’s only a matter of time until he does commit. I honestly believe that.

That’s all I’ve got for you today. It’s been fun. Call me when the SEC has somebody new.

If the SEC adds a few more teams, this will be the last year we have a shot at a bowl game.

This is basically the only thing I read or take from this article… People, really, you know the truth. Just like I do. You see the writing on the wall. People just prefer to ignore it until we “INEXPLICABLY START LOSING” like always.

Why does it seem like I’ve heard this before? Anyone else smell 6-6? Really kills any buzz going into the season. If we can’t throw the ball, we are one dimensional. They’ll force turnovers.

2 months to Big Blue Madness!!! The countdown is on for me!

To say Tim Masthay punted well is a bit of an understatement. That guy is going to be the best punter in the NFL, maybe this year and he’s already in the hall of fame for punters that can tackle. I am a big fan!
