Its that time once again. Time to gaze into the crystal ball and see what’s coming down the pipeline for the Cats on the hardwood. The Cats struggled over the last five going 3-2 and dropping out of the top 25. The next five though provide the Cats a chance to grow and climb back up the rankings. We’ve played 9 games over the past month but now things are going to slow down a bit. For a while it will be about one game per week until things pick back up with SEC play. Here’s a quick look ahead to the rest of December.
Finals week means it’s going to be a long seven days of no basketball. Once that brutal stretch is over Rupp will play host to the Bison based out of Nashville. Lipscomb hasn’t been competitive in many games this year except one against Murray St. For example they were destroyed by more than 45 points when they played Ole Miss and their record is 3-4. The Cats should have no trouble after a week of Camp Cal.
Marshall Thundering Herd
Two weeks from today will feature another border war with the Marshall Thundering Herd. The Herd made headlines this week for their actions during the rivalry game with WVU. A Herd player was on the ground when he decided to pull an Ndamukong Suh and kick a mountaineer below the belt. The kick nearly incited a brawl and would leave five guys ejected from the game. So far the Herd sit at 5-4 but have dropped a couple of really close games. Matt described them as being sneaky good and they should provide a great measuring stick before the game at the Yum! Center.
@ #5 Louisville Cardinals
Well there is one game everybody circles when the schedule is released and that is with the Cards. The last time we met our hated rivals it was en route to a national championship in a game that eliminated the redbirds from the Final Four. It was amazing but now the Cards will enter the game as the higher ranked team with the only chance of beating UK for the foreseeable future. Louisville has looked strong at times and beatable at others. A few weeks of serious conditioning should have the Cats ready to play in the hostile arena, hopefully someone can have a breakthrough like Josh Harrellson and the Cats leave with a perfect record against UofL under Cal.
Eastern Michigan Eagles
To think that the final game of the non-conference is just four games away blows my mind. Seems like yesterday the Cats were tipping off against Maryland and now SEC play is just a month away. This season is flying by. The honor of final OOC game goes to the Eastern Michigan Eagles who are currently 5-2. That record is a bit deceiving as the Eagles haven’t played anyone of note except Syracuse. The Orange won that game 84-48. The Cats should be able to cruise in this one before they head into the SEC.
@ Vanderbilt Commodores
We owe Vandy one merciless beating and the factors to do so seem to be there. After beating us in the SEC championship to spoil our perfect season Vandy lost their senior core and are in rebuilding mode. The ‘Dores are 3-4 right now with no good wins and some bad losses. Kentucky should head into Memorial and have a total squash match. Although that odd gym could prove to be a challenge for a young team. The Cats should be able to win big for their first SEC win of the year.
So what do you think? Will the Cats be perfect over the next month or will they continue to struggle?
