Similar to John Wall’s Year. It maybe disappointing but it’s not a failure.
In a year you have a chance at a title you have to at least make it to final 8, anything after that is gravy.
If we don’t win it all this year, it will feel like a failure, or at least a let down. It’s just show it is these days.
Also, 2015 it doesn’t look like we are recruiting a point guard so far. I guess that will be D. Hawk’s year to start?

Matt – IMO final four is ALWAYS a huge accomplishment no matter what since to win it all needs a lot of luck 🙂
To me, anything short of a Final 4 would be considered a failure. I saw Year 1 with Cal as somewhat of a failure but didn’t harp on it because at least we finally had our swag back after the Gillispie years. But this year, to have an “epic” class and to come off an NIT bid, I will expect and accept nothing less that a Final 4. Sounds crazy, but that’s Kentucky.

It’s a good season if they play hard, if the games are fun to watch and they make a decent run in the tournament. Remember that the greatest game ever (Duke 92) was a game we lost. If we can look back and say it was a fun season that’s good enough for me. Last year was not fun.

The WVU game shows on any given night a team can go cold.
We considered last season a failure, but it set UK up for the championship run this season. So you may call last season a failure, but if they had more success, UK probably doesn’t have the much needed competition (WCS and Poythress for example) to push these incoming freshmen. Do I want a final four? Yes. But it is a player’s first program.
I went to All-Sports in the Fayette mall yesterday, saw AP and JR…They both are MONSTERS!
I would venture to say that the best team in the land fails to win the championship at least 60% of the time.
I guess it’s easier to call the Heat season a failure since they play in series and not 1 and done games. Anyone can get tripped up in 1 game, but a great team should always win a series.

John Wall’s team put us back in the limelight and announced we were back as the elite in college basketball, so while the finish was incredibly disappointing, that team accomplished a lot in Cal’s first year in establishing the culture of the “new” program. Next year’s team isn’t responsible for building Cal’s brand, it’s already built.
Ryen is one of the WWL’s best talents. Be nice Matt, we don’t want another major voice hate us…(ex. Jeff Goodman)

To me a Final 4 is needed otherwise its a disappointment, it is not a failure.
-Pitino’s best team at U of L was in 09 and they lost in the Elite 8
-Knight’s best team was in 75 and they lost in the Elite 8 as well.
-K’s 99 team was 37-1 and lost in the title game.
-Dean Smith had many teams that were favorites to win and did not.
The talent with Wall’s team wasn’t the issue it was skill set. They didn’t have a knock down Lambesque shooter. That teams best three point shooter was Patterson and Bledsoe. They were streaky at best.
How long before the national media picks up on the dungeon comment?

Execution wise, Knights team was better
Shooting wise, Knights team was better
Basketball IQ wise, Knights team was better
Defensively, Knights team was better.
John Wall’s team relied a lot on their superior athleticism to win games. They did not execute very well. Didn’t shoot well, and didn’t defend too well.
Tubby also had 4 overall #1 seeds and never made a FF….

I would have to disagree, Kentucky was the best team in the 2011 Final Four.
Matchup problems cause great teams to fall on a regular basis. To judge the county’s greatest teams I feel you have to objectively ask which team can defeat more of great teams on a regular basis, which is also exactly what the NBA playoof series does.
Wow, who has gotten ahold of Matt and changed his tone of this years team. He one said this team is going to be really,really,really good. Now its,their are gonna be a lot of good teams and UK wont be much better.

80 – fair enough, but wouldn’t you say that the 2011 team got lucky in several tournament games (Stanford, Ohio State, etc) as well.
How about comparing both teams playing virtually the same UConn team? Wall & Co. OWNED them in NY but Knight & Co. got owned twice to them (one of which was at the time, the worst loss under Cal era).
I think overall, Wall’s team was so confident that they didn’t always get all into the games until crunch time and then pulled it out. But Knight’s team was less talented and worked harder and stayed focused which helped out in the end, but hurt them in the regular season.
