I know this is all still in the works and it takes a long time to plan and develop, but sheesh this is a lot of back slapping for nothing concrete yet and no budget or final plan to do anything concrete yet. Wake me when they have a plan and $$. Zzzzzzzz….

Do we really need to hear the bio of every single individual and organization involved in this process? No one who has spoken so far has said anything that warrants a live press conference. Everything that’s been said so far could be just as effectively released in a written statement, for anyone who actually cares to read it. Just a bunch of name-dropping so far.

It is just downright depressing that the flagship basketball program in the country can’t build their own arena. Depressing. We are obviously not who we thought we were.

Its a shame a school like Auburn, who hates bball has a new ON CAMPUS arena. For the following schools they have ON CAMPUS arenas-Florida, Vandy, Georgia, OSU, Michigan, on and on. We should have a sports complex at commonwealth. Football and bball with parking structure in between. Create green space and parking to make it pretty.

Went to NCAA tourney with lower arena tix and the seats were so tight you cant even sit comfortably. To do Rupp correctly, you would have to shut it down (for at least 12-18 months), remove the concrete seat risers and install new precast seating riser planks. That is the only way to increase leg room. I’m in the business and this is a fact. You can gussy it up all you want but this should be ON CAMPUS.

I say we go back to playing in Memorial. Add A/C to the facility is a hell of a lot cheaper than paying for half of a renovation at a terrible OFF Campus building.

They are having this done as well as building an entertainment district… To bring more money downtown and our city to attract more tourism!!! Everyone around here says Lex is boring, so here you go… Redo Rupp and and make things to do downtown and not just have Hamburg

OSU’s arena is not on their campus, it’s pretty much like Rupp where it’s in the surrounding area nearby. I’ve been there multiple times

  24. Hmmm
    2:32 pm July 10, 2013 Permalink

My only hope is that they nix any commercially contrived “entertainment district.” There’s in excess of 60 bars and restaurants downtown, with more added each week. The last thing we need in a 4th Street Live kind of thing.

Lexington can’t currently compete with nearby cities (Louisville and Cincinnati namely in terms of entertainment right now. To be competitive as a city, you need lots of entertainment. There isn’t a ton of it here at the moment, as much as I love Lexington.

#15 and #19 You guys are the reason that, unfortunately, this blog needs a comment section that people can be banned from. You serve no purpose other than to ridicule someone else’s post. Disagreement is acceptable and encouraged where there is disagreement. However, you guys (non-gender specific) contribute nothing. Is your life so sad that…well, no need for that either. If you disagree with someone’s comment or a post, tell why you disagree instead of “you’re dumb”.

  28. Hmmm
    2:36 pm July 10, 2013 Permalink

BOSOX: did you really just say “not just have Hamburg?” If an enema was to be performed on the city of Lexington, Hamburg is where it would enter.

  31. Hmmm
    2:41 pm July 10, 2013 Permalink

PhilUK18, I completely agree with that, but the point is this: will a (sure to be) terribly named area full of chain restaurants and bars that can be found in Louisville, Cincinnati, or Nashville bring in anyone who isn’t already coming here for some other purpose (like a basketball game)? If not, we have establishments that already serve those purposes. In the end, I guess I’m just of the mind that it doesn’t add anything.

  32. PhilUK18
    2:43 pm July 10, 2013 Permalink

How about banning people who post drivel about how “UK aren’t who we thought we were”? Not only does that not make sense, it’s just wrong at the very foundation of it. No school just up and builds their own arena when it would cost as much as one that UK would build. I didn’t care to explain that to the original poster. Take your PC whining and crying and go somewhere else with it. Sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade, and #12 is a moron.

  33. PhilUK18
    2:44 pm July 10, 2013 Permalink

True, possibly not. What I’m hoping for out of the planned entertainment district is actually unique bars and restaurants that will draw people in. I could just be overly optimistic though, and it might wind up as a bunch of crap.

#32. I don’t go on message boards and call people dumb or morons. Sad for you that you don’t respect my opinion. Just because you disagree with me doesn’t make you a bad person, it just makes you wrong. It is a comment section. I care nothing about Lexington’s finances and I don’t even live in Kentucky. I’m a UK fan and I stand by my statement that we are not who we thought we were and I reserve the right to be depressed about it. I grew up cheering for UK, not the city of Lexington.

  37. PhilUK18

Ok, if we’re “not who we thought we were”, and you think we should just build an arena with the school’s money (which there isn’t much of, by the way, with all the building on campus going on), how do you propose that would happen? And moreover, name me ONE school that just builds arenas whenever they want, arenas that would cost hundreds of millions. It’s not just UK that can’t do that, it’s schools in general. I would go farther than saying you don’t know about Lexington’s finances and say that you don’t know much about finances in general.

#21/22. Not trolling at all. Sorry you feel that way. I’ll be the adult and give my reasoning. I live in Cleveland and make only a few games every so often. I work in Cbus on an OSU project and it is a fact that the arena is on campus. Nation Wide arena would be the equivalent of RUPP for Cbus. OSU’s arena is located off of Lane Ave. You cross over the Olentangy River / bridge which gives the impression its not on campus but it is. It is the start of the athletic complex that houses multiple field and athletic offices. You can go to a thing called “google” and take a look. Very cool website.

As for memorial, simply want a temp solution while a new arean is built on campus. I thought the atmosphere for the UNLV game in 2009? was great. And should be that way all the time.

  40. PhilUK18

Touche. In my fervor to argue I did make an error, you’re right, it is on campus. Besides the fact that you seem like a condescending dick, you were right. I guess that doesn’t happen often for you to be so uppity about it.

As far as Memorial, that still seems ridiculous to me. People complain about ticket prices now? They would probably at least double at Memorial, with the capacity being almost exactly half that of Rupp.
