Robin Hood’s Saturday Wrap-up

When it comes to the movies, I’ve always been a big fan of historical epics-especially those that involve re-writing history into either a huge testosterone-driven slaughterfest (think 300 and Braveheart) or a huge estrogen-laced lovefest (think First Knight and Gone with the Wind).  I’m just a sucker for an epic movie.  That’s why, for about six months now, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the premiere of the Russell Crowe epic “Robin Hood”.  I’m t-minus 1 hour from finally getting my wish, which means my husband is about t-minus 4 hours from getting his for taking me.

-Big news out of today was of course the addition of Eloy Vargas to the 2010 roster.  Vargas was a highly touted recruit from 2008 (4 star, #26 and #33 ranked by Scout and Rivals respectively) and brings some much-needed depth for the Cats at the forward position.  Once suiting up for Billy the Kid, Vargas spent the last year at the Juco level, averaging 21 points and 1 rebounds a game for the Miami-Dade Community College Sharks.  He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining and while his numbers at Florida weren’t impressive, he  was suffering through an ankle injury for most of his time in Gainsville.

-As Matt noted earlier, the addition of Vargas likely puts the Cats back in the #1 position in the 2010 recruiting rankings, overtaking Memphis and former Cal assistant Josh Pastner.  As much as Memphis fans love to hate on us, they’ve got a pretty good thing going down there and should be excited about their future if Pastner can coach half as well as he can recruit.  I can just see the NCAA committee trying to find a way to match the two teams up in the tournament for the cliched “mentor-student” storyline.

Lookin for Lucky won the Preakness today, ending Calvin Borel’s triple crown hopes and making you wonder why Baffert stuck with Garrett Gomez after the Santa Ana Derby debacle instead of making the switch to Martin Garcia earlier.  Might have cost him the Kentucky Derby and a chance at the Triple Crown.  Want more horsing commentary from me?  Yeah, that’s about all I got from watching an hour of Preakness coverage today.  That and Baltimoreans love them some volleyball.

-John Wall proved the haters wrong and Coach Cal  definitively shot down his NBA rumors.  All in a day’s work.

-In baseball news, three different Cats homered to clinch their series against the defending champion and 20th ranked LSU Tigers.  This was their first series win against LSU since 2007 and their 3rd series victory over a ranked opponent this season.  They’ll finish up the series and the regular season  at noon in Cliff Hagan Stadium.  Nice win today for the Cats of the diamond.  For full coverage check out

-The men’s tennis team also posted a victory today, taking out Cleveland St. (poor poor Cleveland) in the first round of the NCAA championships 4-0.  Nice win today for the Cats of the court.

-Let’s play a little “caption this photo” game:

That’s all for now.  We’ll have coverage tommorrow and next week and probably for the rest of time.  So stick with us.  We promise we’ll try not to be #wrongonpurpose.
