Looking at these two and ESPN, it kind of makes the recruit ranking system look like a joke in itself. At least people agree on the basketball stars. Maybe because there are so many fewer people?

If we didn’t play in the SEC we would look so much better. we are 31st in the country, but 14th in the SEC. That means there are only 17 other teams better than us outside of conference.

If you take out Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Florida State, there is only 9 nontraditional powers better than us in the country. Not including teams like Nebraska, Penn State, and Miami whose history is much more storied than ours.

I’ll take that. Hell, maybe we end up with two Randall Cobb’s (underrated playmaker) in this class and our first real QB since Counch. If thats the case we could repeat some of the magic from 2006-07

Rivals is not taking into account class size. There’s no way Ole Miss actually has a better class. UK has 11 more players.

According to Scout only 10 SEC schools recruited better than Kentucky. So that means there are at least three other schools at the bottom that we can compete with. Of course, if you believe Rivals, UK has the worst recruiting class in the conference. Drew says that Scout is clearly better. I suppose he is basing that on the fact that Scout has UK ranked higher. In any event this all just means that UK will still not be able to play with the top teams in the conference. When are we going to get a new coach who can actually recruit.

  26. zyds ecobon

#22 and #23, IMO the relevant number to look at in both the Scout and Rivals rankings per team is the average star rating. That takes the # of players in each class out of the equation. UK is last in the conference in both rankings by that number. Point is, Ole Miss signed less than half of the kids UK signed, but the ones they did sign are perceived as more talented. So what if UK signs 25 kids and Mizzou for example only signed 18. Could just means Mizzou didn’t need to sign a large class….but the projected talent level of the kids they signed is above ours..

    24. UL does not need a strong class to win the joke that is the BIg East. All he needs is an average team (SEC comparison) to win the league, and get to the Orange bowl.

On a UK football note, I wish we were doing the things Vandy is doing! Whoever says UK will never be able to move up in the SEC, I will just point at Vandy, and the much worse history they have in the game of pigskin. Is that stopping them?

  28. mores

Scout actually is the better service because Rivals’ talent was gutted by ESPN when ESPN decided they wanted in on the recruiting coverage market. The better comparison would be Scout to ESPN. I have no idea where we stand on ESPN’s rankings.

#26- average star ranking itself isn’t good either with the importance of depth. As you alluded to, it really depends on each team’s needs. But you can make certain determinations; for example, it’s absolutely stupid to rank Ole Miss’ ahead of ours, as they have a paltry 6/100ths of a point advantage and only 18 players; the margin of error in recruiting more than covers that spread.

  29. zyds ecobon

#21 reality check … but we DO play in the SEC. You’ll take 31st by Scout and unranked by Rivals and be happy with it? Got news for you… our recruitng classes have been ranked somewhere around that for the last few years, but always near last in the SEC. We play 8 SEC games per year. You do the math., and now Vandy has leapfrogged us…

    zyds ecobon,

I was just about to point that out.
The only thing I would add we have a higher percentage (80%) of 3* or greater players than Ole Miss (70%). Of course, that is overanalyzing a bit. It’s pretty clear where this class ranks in comparison to the rest of the SEC.

Please tell me what Vandy has done that we haven’t. They had their best team in years last year and that resulted in 6 win regular season wins and a loss to Cinci in their bowl game. Yes, they took us to the woodshed last year, but if we had their season would anyone be ANY happier? I say no. We had a great albeit ultimately slightly disappointing/underachieving team as recently as 2007, so I’m not sure where you are trying to go with that comment.

This is really crazy! Rivals has us with 1 4* 26 Commits and 14 in the conference and Scout has us with NO 4* 28 Commits and 11 in the conference. How is that possible? Are any of these the same Recruiting Guru’s that had Randall Cobb a 2*?

  34. winston guy's hair
    5:39 pm February 1, 2012 Permalink

Again, if people really think there’s much difference outside of the top half of the conference, you are absolutely delusional or you have no grasp of the ins and outs of football recruiting. THIS ISN’T BASKETBALL. Football is not nearly as “talent” driven, and the recruiting services are not nearly as accurate. There are way more players in the talent pool and it’s impossible to get a good read on their talent level, much less attempt to rank teams using arbitrary numbers and stats.

  35. jpgott2
    5:40 pm February 1, 2012 Permalink

Has Joker ever shown that we can develop talent? Look at his evaluation of Newton in last years preseason, where he said he was ‘night and day better’, and making the throws in practice. How was our offense last season? Were they not one of the worst offenses in the country?
Add to this, the fact that we have lost our 2 best tacklers, and a host of O-Linemen, and you have low expectations in my book. Oh, may I add that we have another SEC game on our schedule? Show it on the field! I do not need spoon fulls of hype/talk. Just show the UK faithful that you are competitive! We do not expect to be Alabama, but it would be nice to think that we can win when UK steps on the field.

You can go ahead and erase this mods, as I know it is not only por-UK propaganda.

shoulda went to the ACC when we had a chance. UK basketball would have been fine, and UK football could have actually competed for an occasional conference title. In the SEC we will always have the arguement of which 2 teams we think we are better than. If Ole Miss and Vandy ever improve even slightly, we wont even have that argument

32., I love how you hang your hat on 2007, just like we all do. Yet, look at how long Vandy has had their coach! Watch every game they played in, and you know what you will see? They were competitive! Plus, they have a Top-25 recruiting class coming in, that has FOUR legit 4-stars. How is this possible? They have 0 history in football, even when compared to UK! The truth is, they have a real coach.
See, I do not care that they beat us last season, for it proves nothing, but, they also played many of the traditional powers tough, instead of getting blasted by 30+ points. Now that is a difference. They are heading in the right direction, while UK is heading nowhere.

Scout heavily wigts number of signed recruits. since we signed 500 players, our class looks better than it is. In other words, Scout sucks. For example, they have Nebraska ranked 49th and Riva;s has them at 26. It’s because they signed only 17 players. Riva;s has the better rankings.

My point was if the goal is to go 6-6 then lose to a shitty team in a shitty bowl we should look no further than our own 2010 season. Don’t act like Vandy did something good (for them, maybe it was). The fact that you (and others) are putting so much stock into rankings really shows your ignorance of football recruiting and the recruiting services.

  43. jpgott2

39., How am I showing ignorance, when all I have to do is look at HISTORY? UK usually gotten recruiting classes that are in the bottom 1/3 of the SEC, and they finish in the bottom 1/3 of the SEC! What is hard to understand? Are you some recruiting guru that tries to convince yourself, and everyone else that things are different?
The goal is to never go 6-6, for it is more lie 12-0, but the expectations at UK have easily fallen under Joker! We were hitting some 7-5’s and were on a bowl streak, but now, we are falling, and try to convince ourselves that our 14th ranked class (SEC) is going to change things. The truth is, it probably won’t. There will be some surprises, but nothing that will change our fate. Not right now.

this is the happy time of the year for those blue colored glasses folks, like over at BBK. They talk about how great this class is, COMPARED TO OTHER UK CLASSES. That means exactly nothing until we start competing in our conference. AND, this time of year is great because everyone forgets that the rosy part is over, and spinning this info is rampant…now Joker has to actually go prove he can COACH a team and not waste talent…something he failed at miserably this year. Remember, it is tough to lose a football game in February or March…let’s talk about this around October.

You do realize this is a more highly rated class than any we’ve had recently, right? Point: It’s NOT the recruiting that’s the problem. And if it is, it’s certainly not the # of stars next to their name! The difference is, we had PLAY MAKERS, but guess what? None of them were rated very highly. We need dynamic play makers not stars next to names. We need Cobbs, Johnsons, Lockes, and Tammes. Not Boyds and Newtons. But if stars make you feel better, well, tough shit.

It’s not where any of us want to ultimately be in the class rankings, but every kid we signed can help us win ball games. Can anyone define the difference between the 20th best team versus the 31st best team. I know I can’t tell you why they’re better. It seems to me that when big time schools offer scholarships to certain prospects, those prospects get better ratings because of the school recruiting them. In basketball, when Duke,NC,Kansas, and UK show interest or offer scholarships to certain players that player’s ranking improves. Until 2009, NC and Duke had twice as many McDonalds All Americans than UK or Kansas in the last 30 years, but these players often do not live up to the hype. I think once a kid gets looked at by a top program their worth goes up more with the scouting services. Some coaching staffs are able to find the hidden gems.(Tom Izzo)

Historically, a team playing in a BCS bowl, will have a roster filled with 4 star athletes, or better. Our talent in the recent past has been no better than the past 3 decades. Scheduling, and the need for ESPN to fill their viewing schedule with meaningless bowl games, has resulted in KY being bowl eligible. Doing it the way South Carolina has done it (paying for a Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier) is the only sure way to elevate your football program.
