Here on a Friday night, we take just a second to mourn the passing of Tim Russert. The only thing that likely rivals my passion for UK sports is my passion for politics and public affairs and when it comes to that segment of life, no one was better than Tim Russert. As host of “Meet the Press” and the head of political reporting for NBC News, Russert was an American news icon. In a world where virtually all television news anchoring is done now by those whose political loyalties are obvious, Russert was a journalist’s journalist….challenging his guests with tough questions, but always being fair and as neutral as possible. It is now accepted that what passes for political discourse in this country is getting two people on opposite sides of an issue and having them scream at each other, yet Russert stood in stark contrast to that norm. I spend virtually every Sunday night watching the re-airing of “Meet the Press” and will greatly miss Russert’s perspective and ability. On the brink of a political campaign that will ignite many in this country, Russert’s passing is a great loss to all those who love politics and journalism at its best. He will be missed.
