It seems as if we have been hit with an unbelievable rash of deaths recently, and it continued today. The death of Steve “Air McNair” is especially tough because of his young age and the bizarre circumstances behind it. I remember Air McNair best as the picture above shows him, the sensation from a school called Alcorn State that was taking the college football world by storm. Even though no one had heard of him just months before, McNair became a college football sensation. His games were played on ESPN2 and a whole nation of fans, including one high school kid in Middlesboro, Kentucky, watched and cheered him on. People who remember him mostly from his NFL days may forget what a revelation he was in college. He could move, but also throw the ball a ton, and the Alcorn State offense was the most exciting in the sport.
He was of course one yard away from Super Bowl glory versus the Rams, but his career was nonetheless solid. Three Pro Bowls, multiple playoff berths and a long career, make McNair a top level quarterback, even if he is not a Hall of Famer. By all accounts, he was a wonderful guy off the field and his death on the 4th of July is a very tragic event.
