University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Rick Pitino to retire… in 2017.

It’s never too early to announce your departure, I guess. In today’s pre-Georgetown news conference, Rick Pitino discussed the importance of living in the present — and then he announced his retirement. Kind of.

“My contract runs out in 2017, I’m not coaching anymore after that.”

If Pitino does hang up his crusty coaching pants in 2017, he’ll be leaving the game exactly 20 years after he left Kentucky for Boston. I can promise you he’ll look back on those 20 years of mediocrity and say, “What the hell did I do?”

See you in a few days, Rick.

Goodbye Rick. You’ll be leaving in 2017, or in 15 seconds, whichever comes first. Pun intended.

Kentucky made Rick Pitino. If he is lucky enough to get in the Hall of Fame, it will be solely on what he did here. That has to gag him a little.

Hanging on just like the coach before him did. The game has passed him by, just like it did Denny. Pitino is SO JEALOUS of Cal, he can’t see the trees for the forrest. He can say how much fun this years team or last years team is/was but losing to the Morehead State’s of the world, and teh losses he is gonn ahve with this team once he leaves the friendly confines of the Chicken/Pizza Palace should turn that tune back to him complaining on no talent again!!!

It’s not fair for him to leave UL. UL fans have stuck by his side through what they thought were going to be banners, instead he has more NIT appearances than Final Fours. UL fans put up with his mediocre UL career, he could at least give them 10+ more years of mediocrity

I seem to be in the minority, but maybe we should give him a break. I still feel a little sentimental about Pitino, and can’t bring myself to trash him. He did some good stuff here when we were in serious trouble, and I’ll never forget that. He’s had a rough 10 years. …plus he just looks awful.

18…I’m with you….I returned to Kentucky in 1995 and enjoyed the most amazing run UK has had in decades…unforgettable memories and Rick Pitino set all that in motion. Everyone agrees that he made a huge mistake leaving ….but UK made just as big a mistake with BCG….We all make mistakes. All this hate for Pitino is about two things: The rivalry with Cal and his coaching at Louisville ……..which ultimately means nothing compared to his contributions to UK ….He is a big part of our history and we owe him some gratitude and respect.

18 & 29 I am with you. I hate the Cards and Pitino now that he is there, but 89-97 were some of the most exciting years of UK BB. He brought us out of Kentucky Shame, and suddenly Lexington was hopping with the most exciting BB in the country. He dominated UL, IU and the SEC, winning the SEC tourney every year. He went to 5 elite 8 in 6 years, 3 final 4s, 2 finals and won the whole thing. He had the 31 point come back on the road at LSU. He beat Shaq with Pelphrey and Farmer. He took a great Duke team to the wire with Mashburn and D II talent. Great memories of the Pitino years. But Cal has restored UK BB much more quickly than Pitino. If he could keep these great players here longer UK would absolutely dominate the college scene, but we know that will not happen. Hopefully Cal will be here through around 2020. That should bring about another decade of great BB to the Commonweath.

Why are Kentucky fans so obsessed with Rick Pitino? He left UK basketball program 14 years ago. I am not sure we need to keep going back to him stating, leaving Kentucky basketball was the biggest mistake of his career. Who cares? We have a great coach who is more hungry for a national championship than Rick Pitino. I think Cal not having won one makes him that much more focused on getting #8 for Kentucky fans. He really knows exactly how bad the state is craving for a national championship. Let’s live in the present forget Rick Pitino and jump in Coach Cal bandwagon. Go Cats

The basketball gods have not been on Pitino’s side since leaving UK and I’m glad. He’s the only slim ball to coach at 2 hated rivals like UK/UL in the history of the game. He thought upon returning to the college game that he would do the same things at UL as he did at UK and it hasnt happened because UL is not UK nor will they ever be UK in basketball. My guess is he will not last that long (2017); imagine that lol. His ego can only handle so much abuse as Calipari will continue to whip him on and off the court so therefore I say he is out in 3 years.

Given the extenuating circumstances in this case (his being at Louisville and Cal’s presence at Kentucky), it is easy to see why there would be hard feelings and harsh words exchanged; but I think that both parties have done their respective parts to increase the bitterness and play into the hands of the media-KSR included-who make money off of this kind of mudslinging. I just think its lamentable that this whole thing has played out like a bad divorce with UK fans feeling like they’ve been cuckolded; and people like Cal (seemingly) thinking he has to leave out any reference to the glory years under Pitino at events like Madness. In a way it really borders on revisionist history, and it lamentable. Doubtless Cal has been amazing for Kentucky, and the way that he has embraced former players and brought them back into the fold is worthy of all the praise. He’s obviously way ahead of everyone in today’s game, and we’re back in thick of things where we belong because of him. However, no one can dispute that Pitino made UK the “Gold Standard” long before Calapari arrived, and regardless of the ensuing circumstances I think that we should be grateful for that key contribution and quit fueling this supposed “feud,” which really only benefits the media. Pitino has been upfront in public about the mistake that he made leaving Kentucky; I just want to be upfront about my appreciation for his contributions to our glorious tradition.

The animosity toward Pitino is simple: He latched onto the Louisville coaching job (thinking who knows what) when he could have taken a coaching position elsewhere.

If he had chosen a different college, he wouldn’t be so despised by Kentucky fans. This was a personal insult. He chose Louisville, so I choose to despise him.

    Wasn’t that Morehead game something?

I am glad he went to Louisville instead of UNLV it made Cards relevant again took the UK/UL rivalry to the next level. Thanks to his coaching and recruiting in the 90s led to 4 final four 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 3 straight championship game and 2 NCAA Championships.

BossHog, well said! I for one am grateful of what pitino did for the Cats in the 90’s. Yes, I was a bit perturbed when he took the UL job, if for no other reason than hearing the UL fans crowing about it. But guess what, his success there has paled to what he did at UK, so I’m over it. I can understand UK fans feeling slighted, after all, I cannot think of another coach going to a heated rival in the same way, but face it, he didn’t go directly from UK to UL. Let’s just let things land where they will (i.e., the Sypher incident) and go about our business cheering on the Cats!
