Rick Bozich reiterates that UK has no interest in Petrino

A mini coaching search update from our pal Rick Bozich: UK and Bobby Petrino isn’t going to happen. Yesterday, Bozich shared his thoughts on his WDRB blog:

Bobby Petrino will not be the next football coach at the University of Kentucky.

That remains the message from both the Kentucky and Petrino camps. Even before the season, the persistent word from Lexington was that UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart would have no interest in Petrino if things went wrong with Joker Phillips.

That has not changed 10 days after Phillips was told he would not return next season. Even the Petrino camp understands and accepts that today.

Why? Bozich echoes what we’ve been hearing since the decision to let Joker go: he’s “swinging for the fences.” Who does Bozich think the Cats interested in?

Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes
Texas A&M offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kliff Kingsbury
Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville
Former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti
Cincinnati’s Butch Jones
Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease
Duke’s David Cutcliffe

If you don’t believe me, check his blog out for yourself.

Petrino would be swinging for the fences. I agree that yes, he might leave and he is a snake in the grass in some ways. However, if he comes here and wins big, then leaves, well at least he would prove that it can be done at UK. Also, let’s be honest, any coach that does well at UK is going to leave sooner or later. I think we should go after the best coach available and that is obviously Petrino.

Swinging for the fences, more like playing small ball. It feels like man on first and second with no outs and the batter tries to bunt them over but instead it comes straight back to the pitcher who throws to third and gets the lead runner, the very next pitch the batter hits into a double play and what seemed like a nice inning turns to crap in 30 seconds.

Everyone saying they are done with UK football, that’s fine, but don’t come back cheering UK and their new coach if they start winning. 98% of everyone who bitches about it has zero idea of what really goes on with a coaching hire. There is a lot more to it than just getting a big name. Everyone wants the “homerun” hire who has already establshed themself as a winner, but what about the majority of unestablished coaches who come in and build a great program? Hate to break it to you, but most programs deal with the latter scenario. Would you rather risk a few more years of bad football because of a non-homerun hire, or risk Petrino in another scandal and have the victim suing UK Athletics for all they have?

I have supported Barnhart in the past but not now, you chose a coach that wins…period! This isn’t little league, this is SEC football and a huge revenue producer for our university! Im sorry that Petrino is tough to handle, rubs people wrong way, has made some personal mistakes, ect. but the guy wins at football, and that is what we are hiring is a football coach! We are not hiring a “new friend” for Mitch, we are hiring a football coach. When you run a business you hire the best available, and sometimes they arent the easiest to deal with and sometimes they have personal life issues that you may not agree with, but if they do their job (win football games) then you are doing what is best for your company.

Its time Mitch put the unversity football program first and not his “friendships” and “easy hires”. Mitch doesnt want to work to hard, and he knows with a Petrino hire he will have to work harder, and it pisses me off. Mitch is taking the easy road. He needs to put the university first, and Mitch second!

Jurich > Barnhart and it is not even close! I wish we had an AD with some personality, some drive and some balls! Our AD is to worried about volleyball and “going against the fan-grain” than the real stuff, like a winning football coach!

So, if we are “swinging for the fences”, here’s how I see each hire breaking down.

Dykes: Strike out swinging if there isn’t a good DC coming with him. If so, then at best a double.
    Kingsbury: See Dykes.
Tuberville: Walk. The at bat isn’t exciting, but hey, at least you’re on base.
Bellotti: Hit by pitch, knocked out of game with concussion. His issues on how he left Oregon, with issues with several players, no thanks.
Jones: Thrown out at first. You made contact, but the fans won’t support a Big East hire not named Charlie Strong.
Pease: Strike out looking. Won’t motivate the fanbase, offense has been shaky in several games this season, and same problems as Kingsbury and Dykes.
Cutcliffe: Strike out looking, trips over shoe laces walking to dugout, falls into path of batter on-deck taking practice swings, concussion, and lost vision in right eye. Cutcliffe is a lateral move. If that’s the hire, might as well have hung on to Joker as he was at least OUR loser.

Mitch knows his job security isn’t based on UK football. He took the risk with Cal and it paid off.

For him, a safe pick for Football keeps him employed so he can Tubby Smith the next 20 years (and hope Cal stays golden).

I really like Kliff Kingsbury, and would be very excited if he became our new head coach. It would be very risky though, because he has never been a head coach and is very young, and add that he has only been coaching since 2008. But I kind of see that as a positive, because if he is only in his 5th season as a coach at all, and he is already the offensive coordinator for an SEC team, there has to be a reason for his quick rise through the ranks. And all his offenses were very successful, and exciting, which is what a lot of UK fans want. Last year as the Offensive Coordinator for Houston, they led the NCAA in yards, points, and almost every other offensive category. I just feel like he has an “it factor,” whatever that may be.

Good question #56. The best part of the UK/dook game was the fact that Bobby Knight wasn’t part of the telecast. But on second thought, maybe it would have been better if he had been and gone off on Cal and UK on the air and gotten canned by ESPN!! Oh and as I have been saying for two weeks, hire Kingsbury!!

Bobby Petrino is overrated. I really don’t get the infatuation in his coaching ability.

The biggest myth out there about Petrino is that he built two programs. He didn’t build either one.

UL – He took over for John L Smith who had taken UL to 5 straight bowl games and had won 8 and 10 games in 2 of the 3 seasons before Petrino arrived. He also happened to be there when the best QB and RB prospects in Jefferson County in the last 20 years were there in Brian Brohm and Michael Bush. Both were not only from Louisville but grew up UL fans. So he maintained the success that John L set for him with John L’s recruits and then UL has a losing record the year after he leaves the program.

Arkansas – He took over for Houston Nutt who won 8 or more games in 6 of 10 seasons. Nutt had also won 8 and 10 games in the two years before Petrino took the job. Petrino maintains the success with Nutt’s recruits. As soon as Petrino leaves the program, the team has a losing record in its first season without Petrino.

The morale of the story is that Petrino was gifted two programs that were doing well and left them much worse after his tenure. Im not even talking about his character. He is just plain overrated as a leader on the football field.

In both the Arkansas and Louisville jobs, Petrino inherited a winner. This is what makes UK completely different yet some think he would take UK and just win here and leave us in a much better place. WHY??? He’s NEVER inherited a loser and he’s NEVER left the program with a foundation for future success.

Yet, somehow the “Petrino or BUST” camp thinks hes the next Bear Bryant and that a coach whose fresh off a scandal, where he tried to hire his mistress and lie about it, should get the UK job.

For the record, I don’t think Sonny Dykes should get the job either.

Instead he writes some letter leaving many unanswered questions on the table.. He’s handled this thing pretty shitty and if he doesn’t at least talk to petrino he’s a fool. I really don’t think anyone has any clue on who the next coach is going to be

Butch Jones and Tommy Tuberville are the only two coaches on Bozich’s list that I’m interested in. Both have had success as head coaches for multiple seasons and both are currently coaches at schools in BCS conferences. Not only are both proven winners, but I think both could do very well here.

If we have to go the coordinator route, Kirby Smart is the best one out there and he knows the SEC inside and out. He should be a candidate if he’s not right now.

Another one that I never see listed is Bob Diaco. He is Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator who was also Brian Kelly’s DC at Cincy and Central Michigan. He is only 39 years old and currently leads one of the best defenses in the country. I think he would be a very intriguing hire and is someone who has been listed as a candidate at seemingly every school but UK.

61 – If UK hired Tressel they would have to open up their entire program to NCAA inspection. The show cause penalty is issued because the NCAA wants to make a coach unhireable. One tiny little mistake and the NCAA could throw the book at UK. The following is the show cause penalty:

19.02.1 Show-Cause Order. A show-cause order is one that requires a member institution to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Committee on Infractions (or the Infractions Appeals Committee per Bylaw 19.2) why it should not be subject to a penalty (or additional penalty) for not taking appropriate disciplinary or corrective action against an institutional staff member or representative of the institution’s athletics interests identified by the committee as having been involved in a violation of NCAA regulations that has been found by the committee. lol. Yeah, a Bobby Petrino hire would be “swinging for the fences”, but while we’re using the baseball analogy, you really want a guy that will step out of the batter’s box to go play for a supposed better team in the middle of the at-bat?

And has been previously stated: Petrino isn’t coming to UK if Tennessee or Auburn is even interested, much less making a serious offer.

I heard some radio guys in the Western part of the state comparing UK football to a person on welfare and thought it was interesting. They said UK was the guy who didn’t want to work and wanted to be handed a check. I think in SEC football that is who we are. We want to share in all the money and glory but we won’t spend any money to improve facilities, recruiting, coaches, etc… Not a bad comparison.

Mike Bellotti!!! Winningest coach of all time at Oregon. Last “successful” UK football coach we got came from there. Going to finally have to face the fact that Kentucky will never have an outstanding football program. First time I’ve seen Bellotti’s name mentioned for the job but you can’t go wrong with a verteran coach. May be tough to convince him to coach though but all in all, a good option!

The problem with some of the names we see is these are coaches competeing outside the SEC making it very difficult to determine their true skills.

I have noticed when UK looks for a coach the fan excitement over the hire is in direct proportion to how bad they are.
Jerry Claiborne-fan excitement low,he didn’t do to bad
    Bill Curry–all in a frenzy(we stole the,total disaster
Hal Mumme-who? fun and exciting although the exit strategy had a little to be desired
Rich Brooks-yawn! you gotta be kidding me–turned out to be one of if not THE most successful coach at UK with 4 bowl trips
Joker–When he was hired people were excited to keep the hot, young co-ordinater here being homegrown and all-I think we all agree this didn’t turn out so well

So here is hoping we hire someone everyone hates and thinks is a loser -it may just lead us on a road to New Orleans

For all of the talk about Mitch would not hire a risky coach. BillyG had 3(?) DUI’s before he hired him over Cal. It is easy to prevent what happened at Arkansas by enforcing normal guidelines for hiring support staff. For example, the head coach can not hire support staff by himself. And also NO LAWSUIT was filed at Arkansas anyway. If UK and “saint” Mitch gave Petrino a chance and he failed, Petrino would look worse for blowing his chance for redemption.
