Rich Brooks Comes Out Swinging on Football Priorities

brooks

Rich Brooks was on the Joe B and Denny show this morning and Kentucky’s former football coach seems very upset with the administration. Brooks wants to see more money poured into the football program – something that was promised to him when he was still at Kentucky – and it’s not getting done. And instead of keeping his frustration in house, he took it to the air waves for all to hear.

“I was there and I was told that we were going to renovate our stadium, have a recruiting room, have club seating and do all the things that all the other schools in the SEC have,” he said. “That didn’t come. It got mired up because a new basketball arena and new baseball stadium were thrown into it and it was just too big of a number.”

A lot of the money that is being put into the university’s other athletic programs comes from football and Rich believes more of it should be spent on football.

“We’ve been known as a basketball school and basketball needs to get what they get and keep getting it, but there is enough money that football brings in that needs to be invested back into the program.”

He believes that investment will pay off like it did at schools like Oregon and Louisville during the Petrino era. Recruits want to see the best of the best and Kentucky isn’t anywhere close right now. Plus, fans would be more likely to come early and stay late if Commonwealth offered club seating.

“You put suites between the goal lines and raise the press box on top of the stadium because that is so antiquated and so old,” he said. “Get club seating in there with an area behind the concourse so they can go inside and get food and drinks. Then maybe you get more people tailgating inside and get more people in the stadium earlier as well.”

Coach Brooks is impressed with the new video boards but he wants to see a renovation to at least one side of Commonwealth. While I completely agree with Papaw, he better not be holding his breath on this one. Rupp Arena is priority number one, two, three, and four.

Commonwealth Stadium is what it is.

As long as you saps keep buying up season tickets for a crappy team, UK wins. Mitch and UK aren’t going to give ANY OF IT back to the program. Accept it or stop buying tickets and showing up on Sat. I think it is obvious that Coach Brooks is taking some focus off of Joker and the bad performance on Saturday and put it on himself. He is doing what he does best, being the center of attention for a program that needs him. Now, let’s see if Joker can right the ship. I don’t have very much confidence.

#5 Yes some do care about some of the other sports. But Brooks is right that more needs to be put into football and it is about the only sport that could show a major return on the investment. Basketball is about maxed out. Football needs whatever it takes to be a top 6 or 7 SEC program every year. If that happened the money would be available for everyone including Cal.

Nearly all the money made from football goes to basketball. We spend more money on recruiting than we do for the entire football program. Something has to be done if we want to be some sort of presense in college football. Yes, I know we are a basketball school, but football makes the money, and quite frankly, is the best sport in the country. Having a terrible football team in a football conference is NOT a good idea. Having Barnhart as the AD means we will NEVER succeed in football as he doesn’t give a sh*t about football. I really, really wish UK tried to keep Paul Bryant as our football coach back then because I bet we would be a lot bigger football school if he had stayed.

24 is right. Joker has to post a big win to get the fan base back. Coach Brooks is correct. It takes investment to bring our facilities up to SEC level. Football is the moneymaker and to let it slip further is foolish. Why some people think UK has to be a one sport school is beyond me. Barnhart intended to build all sports and he has to a degree. But, as Brooks says, invest in football now.

To those that think we are going to be able to win before we renovate need to get a clue! UK needs to upgrade their facilities to attract recruits, and possibly a new coach. Our fanbase is amazing, when you look at the product that gets put on the field, and we are longing for a program that actually competes in the SEC. I get it, that the administration likes not investing anything into the football program, because they pull a ton of money out of it, with the support of a Top-25 fan-base.

We need to pull a page from UL, and create an atmosphere for success! They built a Basketball arena and football stadium, while we have added video boards. They also got a coach from a successful program, and has a ton energy flowing through theirs, while they pickup big time recruits. They are going after success, while UK the UK admin just hopes for it, and does not really care. They just want the fan-base to believe that they care, so the seats get filled.

We fired Billy Clyde after 2 years, and we SHOULD fire JOKE after 2, but we won’t. UK Athletic Department has NEVER expected and has NEVER cultivated a winning football program. Quite frankly, there are many passionate UK football fans, myself included, but this university HAS NEVER and probably WONT Ever make football a priority.

We have the money to spend to hire a great coach, but they won’t. If UK would put out enough cash, they could get a great coach. It will never happen.

At age 40, I have realized that UK football will always suck, and that is a shame, because the fanbase cares, but the school doesn’t.

Even though football brings in 90% of the money($17 Million a year from CBS 4 B-Ball & F-Ball not counting the % from the ESPN /ABC 2.25 Billion dollar deal), UK isn’t willing to take the risk of reinvesting large portions of money into football. In business or sports, you have to constantly reinvest in your business/product or it falls apart. UK is just willing to spend the absolute minimum, no more no less, and it shows; that’s the reason why our football product stays the same, just gets worse, and will never get better.

If it wasn’t for basketball, the SEC should have kicked us out of the SEC years ago.

Good lord, folks. There’s a wealth of publicly-available information on college athletics information out there. Consider using it before making false assertions that reflect only what you wish and imagine to be true, but do not reflect reality.

#5- The problem is not the non-revenue sports, and if you want to blame the allocation of the money we have, blame basketball. Non-revenue sport expenses are 33% of total expenses for UK; the SEC average is 31%. But men’s basketball expenses are 28% of total expenses for UK, and 13.9% for the SEC average. We spend $11.5 million in basketball expenses; no one else tops $7 million. Keep in mind these differences are understated, because I really should be using the non-UK SEC average rather than the whole SEC to show the true result.

#25-“Nearly all” football money does not go to basketball; in fact, NONE of it does. is not Last year the basketball team had aggregate expenses of $11.5 million and aggregate revenues of $16.7 million. The team is completely self-sufficient and does not need any contributions from football, and in fact kicks its excess cash back into the athletics department.

#25-We don’t spend anywhere near on basketball recruiting what we spend on football. Total recruiting expenses for ALL men’s sports including football are only $0.9 million. Football expenses are $13.9 million. In fact, if you sum all basketball expenses together, they’re still less than all football expenses.

Look: we’re all frustrated. We all want more from our football program. But we just don’t have high football revenue. Revenue comes from one source–the fans. We have no one to blame but ourselves. The notion that withholding money in boycott fashion is just silly. We just dropped $6.2 million–HALF our annual football revenue–on stadium improvements. It’s not that the UKAA hates football and refuses to spend money. It’s that we don’t have any. There are plenty of criticisms to levy on the program–for example, we could spend the money we have differently than we are. So stick to those instead of just making stuff up.

Humm,,, well we might not make it to a bowl game this year but we have been to 5 in a row so I’m sure they will understand. Damn, Vandy sure looks good this year, probably wont beat them this year. It makes me sick that all of the money that football brings in gets sucked dry by all of our other athletic programs who for the most part bring in zero revenue to the university..i understand that these other sports need funding, but at some point it seems like UK would realize that if we invest in the football program (which brings in the majority of the money for the university) that it would pay huge dividends not only for the football program but for the other sports as well as the university academics

Its not good business to pump money into sports that doesn’t make anything in return. Its UK so your going to have alot of money spent in basketball that is a given. Football should be right with basketball in priority to spend more money and produce a winner. If you cut some funding off the crappy non-revenue teams that 3% of UK fans care about and put that money towards football renovations, proven coach you will make enough money back to support your non-revenue sports 3% of the fans really care about. Never seen anyone ever complaining our baseball, soccer, rifle, golf team sucks.

I don’t see it as revenue driving football investment. That’s not the way it works. In any other investment discussion you talk about the future gains that can be expected from the investment. Dollars invested into the football program is the fuel the engine requires to perform. Without it, the engine sputters and dies.

If taken on a ten year plan, an argument could be made that spending 15 million up front on football would be a very wise investment revenue-wise.

Same with the Cats! You have to have a coach and staff who can bring in the blue chip players that can compete with the elite teams. Having a nice facility is great but not the first step. Get the coach, staff
    and the players first.

Have we created a monster? It is difficult to deny that KSR promptly delivers factual information often followed by witty and humorous comments regarding UK Athletics. KSR is an acronym that resonates throughout BBN and is referred as the bible by some people. However, the insidious effects of some opinionated articles accumulated within this website are becoming quite the annoyance. When an individual promotes a dissenting viewpoint or opinion throughout an anxious fan base, negative energy can be created. For example, a struggling Kentucky Football squad only degrades further when the most influential UK Athletic website has their head stuck in the rear end of John Calipari. This message certainly does not relate to everyone, just the so-called UK fans that only care about basketball and the permeable minds that support any idea generated by Kentucky Sports Radio. Go Football Cats!
