Ranking the BCS Jobs

Jessica Alba thinks the Florida job is tops.

It appears my computer has decided to take the night off, so no links today.  But, I thought I would bring up a bounce-off from what Matt talked about a lot last week, and that is Kentucky’s standing against the other BCS schools in football.  And I only rank the BCS schools because besides Utah and maybe Boise State, there is no BCS job that is worse than a non-BCS job.  That is to say that a coach would likely take the job at Duke over the job at TCU.

Here is what I took into account when making the rankings: LOCATION + HISTORY/PRESTIGE + CONFERENCE + CURRENT STATUS (single, married, etc.) + FANBASE= RANKING

I have also broken down the schools into categories:

ELITE of the ELITE
1. Florida
2. USC
3. Oklahoma
4. Alabama
5. Ohio State
6. Texas
7. Michigan
8. LSU
9. Nebraska
10. Penn State
11. Virginia Tech
12. Miami

REALLY, REALLY GOOD JOBS (ELITE POSSIBLE)
13. Georgia
14. Florida State
15. Tennessee
16. Clemson
17. Auburn
18. Oregon
19. South Carolina

GOOD JOBS, BUT NEVER ELITE
20. Iowa
21. Wisconsin
22. California
23. Mississippi
24. Oklahoma State
25. Colorado
26. Texas A&M
27. Washington
28. South Florida
29. UCLA

ALWAYS COMPETITIVE, STEPPING STONE JOBS
30. Arkansas
31. Michigan State
32. Texas Tech
33. Missouri
34. West Virginia
35. Arizona
36. Arizona State
37. Georgia Tech
38. Pittsburgh

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, HISTORY OF MEDIOCRE
39. Purdue
40. Oregon State
41. Minnesota
42. Kentucky
43. Rutgers
44. Kansas State
45. Illinois
46. Stanford
47. Cincinnati
48. Virginia
49. Kansas

GOOD ONE OUT OF 15 YEARS, BAD THE REST
50. Mississippi State
51. Louisville
52. NC State
53. Boston College
54. North Carolina
55. Washington State
56. Syracuse
57. UCONN
58. Maryland
59. Wake Forest

BOTTOM OF THE BARREL
60.Iowa State
61. Indiana
62. Vanderbilt
63. Northwestern
64. Baylor
65. Duke

And look, these rankings can always shift.  For instance, when Northwestern went to 2 straight Rose Bowls in the 1990’s, that job was certainly better.  But right now, that job sucks.  And if you ever want to compare two teams and if one job is better than the other, look at coaching hires.  Unless a school hires a longtime assistant, generally your better school hires guys you have heard of.

Take for instance UK and UL.  When the UK job opened up, they hires a former BCS coach who had been to a Rose Bowl.  Louisville hired the coach from Tulsa.  But, if you compare lets say, Kentucky and Texas A&M, Kentucky hired a guy who seemed past his prime when he was hired (which was the wrong assesment), while the Aggies hired the coach of the Green Bay Packers.  Do you think UK could EVER hire the coach of the Green Bay Packers?

So, there you have it.  I predict UK as the 42nd best job in college football RIGHT NOW.  Of course, when they turn this season around and win the Outback Bowl this year, look out Florida, here comes the Cats.
