Everything we know about Randy Jenkins, former UK quarterback and topic on today’s radio show

If you listened to this morning’s radio show, you heard John Short talk about one Randy Jenkins, his favorite former UK football player. The guys spent a good portion of the show trying to figure out who Jenkins is and where he is today, after hearing Johnny Short’s mention. Randy Jenkins instantly became one of KSR radio’s great mysteries. That is, until now.

Here is what we know…

— Born in Pennington Gap, Virginia

— Starred in four sports at Pennington High School

— Held football scholarship offers from Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Clemson

— Turned down a scholarship offer to play basketball at Auburn

— Committed early to play football for Kentucky

— He was the starting punter and quarterback for UK as a freshman, until he broke his ankle against Maryland

— Nicknamed the “Stickleyville Slingshot”

— He was the last quarterback to beat Tennessee in Commonwealth Stadium before the “The Streak.” Jenkins threw two touchdowns and rushed for one in Kentucky’s 21-10 win over the Vols in 1981

— Drafted by Steve Spurrier and the Tampa Bay Bandits and USFL in 1984

— Turned down the Bandits and signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent

— Served as backup punter for the Cowboys and was making a push for backup QB when he re-injured his ankle and forced him to retire from pro football

— Led a Lexington flag football team to second place in the 1986 National Flag Football Playoffs

— Worked construction for 21 years

— Started a Kingsport, Tennessee-based company in 2006 called New Vision Restoration, a full-service repair business for fire, wind and water damage

— Both Tennessee and Virginia levied fines of $500,000+ and revoked his contractor’s license for gross dishonesty.

— Filed for bankruptcy in 2011

— Indicted on three felony counts of passing bad checks and one count of felony grand larceny earlier this year

Customer: Randy, did you fix my leak under the house?

    Randy: Yeah Yeah, It’s fixed

Customer(looking under houses): Umm, Randy, the water is dripping into a paper coffee cup.

Randy: Yeah Yeah, That’s the new Dripcatcher 2000. Fixes every leak in the house.

Man, I loved Randy Jenkins too. Could have ended that timeline of him a couple lines earlier. Wish he didn’t have those troubles.

Randy Jenkins did not pass away. It was his older brother Mike who was killed in a car accident. Mike was an evangelist and a great man.
