Random and totally incomplete SEC Media Days recap: Missouri

For each team session at SEC Media Days, I will provide a quick and totally incomplete recap. Next up: Missouri‘s Gary Pinkel, James Franklin, L’Damian Washington, and Andrew Wilson

— Pinkel only used roughly ten minutes of his allotted thirty, and that includes the very few questions the media had for him. Surprisingly, he wasn’t asked about QB James Franklin’s refusal to take a pain-killing shot before a game last season, nor his job security, which has been a hot topic around the hotel today.

— Missouri may be Kentucky’s best chance for a conference win this season. In their second year in the league, the Tigers are still finding their footing and like the Cats, have a stacked deck against them. However, Gary Pinkel says that this is the best set of skill players he’s had since 2007. Dang.

— Methinks Pinkel is a little bitter about having to travel to College Station three years in a row:

That’s been a blast going down there three years in a row (smiling). We won the two before. Last year, they got after us really good. Kevin did a great job, obviously their quarterback is a great player. Nice to have them come up and have them play us at our place. College football, how can you ever play three times in a row anywhere? I whined and nobody listened.

He literally said that last line. He’s starting to sound like Kevin Stallings.

— Pinkel’s team has been plagued by injuries for the past two seasons, which has prompted him to change some of the Tigers’ practice habits. For instance, Mizzou will no longer have two-a-days.

“Two years in a row, we’ve had the most injuries we’ve ever had. And I want to get my team to September.”

— If you judged by his dress, Missouri QB James Franklin is getting pretty comfortable in the SEC. Franklin sported a bow tie for Media Days, although there is speculation that it’s a clip-on. Frankin livened up the Missouri session by throwing the Missouri fan base under the bus. When asked which SEC fans were the rudest, Franklin said “Missouri. My own fans.” Whoa. He later tried to backtrack on those comments, saying that he was referring to one Missouri fan, who said something to him so rude he couldn’t repeat. Something tells me that one will be hard to live down, James.

— How did James know the SEC was different than the Big 12? “The guys who were bigger were actually faster. Usually if they’re bigger you think they’re getting slower”

— Why is Franklin always smiling? “I’ll try my best to kill them with kindness.” Funny…that’s my strategy with UK media members.

— Like Kentucky, Missouri isn’t projected to win many SEC games. Wide receiver L’Damian Washington had a quote for all you optimists out there: “Predictions are just predictions. That’s why you come out to play ball on Saturday.”

Hugh Freeze is on the mic, so I’m going to wrap this up. If you have any questions for Ole Miss’ coach or players, tweet them to me @MrsTylerKSR. I’ll also be posting news from there directly over the next three days.
