Anthony Davis on his game ending block of John Henson:

Terrence (Jones) was guarding (John) Henson, and I was guarding (Tyler) Zeller. They handed the ball to Zeller in the post and when he shot the ball it came back to Henson. I saw Terrence wasn’t on him, so I just sprinted as fast as I could and got the block and got the rebound. Just like what happened in April of last year when Kentucky played North Carolina. We watched that game on film. Coach Cal stressed that. Even though it’s not their main shooter, to go after it.”

Davis on being nervous before the game:

“Oh yeah, most definitely. I told the assistant coach ‘This is a big game and I’m kind of nervous.’ He told me to settle down and just play. That’s what he told me to do and that’s what I tried to do.”

Darius Miller on UK moving forward after the big win:

“Its a very big win. We felt like this was a test to see where we are at, playing against one of the best teams in the country, and we come out with a W. I think we are pretty happy and proud about it, but we know we aren’t exactly where we want to be. It’s still early on in the season, so we’re happy.”

Miller’s play was huge for UK and he impressed an NBA All-Star along the way:

cp31

Terrence Jones on how UK was able to get the victory:

“I feel like we played together and it was a close game. It just came down to whoever got those last couple stops. We made those two stops about the six-minute mark. And Kyle (Wiltjer) came in and Darius (Miller) came in and me and Mike (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist) were on the bench. They really stepped up and got about three (stops) in a row. Ant (Anthony Davis) got a hook, Kyle (Wiltjer) got an up-and-under, and it just changed the game around to get us a four-point lead.”

UNC’s John Henson on the Davis Block:

“It’s funny because I do the same thing to other guys and he did it to me for the game, it was a great play by a great player…(Davis) was guarding (Zeller) too which means he came from the other side of the lane, it was a great play by him.”

UNC’s Harrison Barnes when asked to compare last year’s team to this one:

“It’s kind of hard to compare. Last year, they were a different team from the first time that we played them to the last time. The second time, I think the other team was better. We’ll see and compare later to see where they are.”

Barnes knows that to win a national championship this year it probably will go through the Wildcats and he kind of alluded to that post-game. UNC is a very talented team and I’m sure no one will be surprised to see them in March, and we can only hope for a similiar result. GO CATS!!!

IU is getting very anxious for the game next Saturday. I watched them dismantle NC St the other day and was actually impressed. Assembly Hall will be absolutely CRAZY. I was there in 09 for it and they hung with us the first half, down 1 point. It’s very possible that they beat us.

If UNC hadn’t hit their three’s, we would have won by over 30 points! The fact that we stayed close the whole game, while they continued to hit their three’s, says a lot about this team! GO CATS!!!

If we see them again, we really need to prepare better on closing out on shooters and fighting through screens. It’s a different game entirely if we take away some of those threes and they have to try to score in the paint against Davis and Jones.

Also, Lamb, Miller, Wiltjer and Teague need to be stroking the 3 better by March. Jones was the only one willing to shoot it throughout the game.

Teague – he had a mechanical flaw in his shot today. His gody was moving away from the basket so he had to give his wrists a little extra filp to get the ball to the rim which made him miss almost everything.

Miller is so smart and so smooth. He knows how to get the ball into the paint, then is quick to recognize a double team and find the open man.
If they don’t double down, he can take anyone one-on-one and at the very worst get to the line.
Seems like more often than not, he hits the tough basket and gets fouled.
To top it all off he’s generally deadly from three seems to sense when the team needs a lift whether it’s a three, a block, a rebound or a steal.

    I predict we go undefeated:

    1) This team showed its ability to come from behind and its toughness against top level talent
    2) Teague will only get better, Gillchrist and Lamb had weak first halfs AND UNC was super hot. I doubt we see that combination the rest of the year
    3) Miller provides what this team needs. A calming force with crucial baskets in the clutch. Our go to guy
    4) Jones and Lamb provide “senior” leadership essentially
    5) Top flight defense. Face it. Most teams don’t hit 11-19 threes during warm up. Won’t happen again.
    6) Our talent is better than any team I’ve seen at UK. We beat a super talented big team with a few sub par performamces, bad rebounding (come on TJ, mix it up more), and bad outside and FT shooting. Seriosuly, we are going to get MUCH better, and no one will be able to keep up.

Actually UK won the rebounding battle which surprised me.
I think the IU game is going to be a real test next week, although UK seems to be improving almost exponentially from game to game.
When these guys find their shooting touch, which is inevitable, it’s over.

Teague must get better. He’s too unpredicatable out there. He drives the lane, leaves his feet and then it’s uh-oh. He needs to get that Bledsoe/Wall mindset in him and attack the rim. But he had better learn how to shoot free throws if he’s gonna go that route.

I like how we used all of our weapons today, Terrence Jones paced us in the first half then MKG started heating up in the second. Then came Miller with jump stops, post ups and pump fakes for buckets. Followed by Doron “I talk it cuz I can walk it” Lamb hitting em with floaters, runners then HUGE 3s. Davis made Zeller work for everything in the second half not to mention his rebounding and the “block.” Wiltjer and Vargas contributed what they could and it was needed. Teague will continue to catch hell but even he only had one turn over and played solid D. We used every tool in the chest to get this one and it was an impressive team win. Well coached too, its good to see that we can bump and grind as well. Great win Cats!

Darius will be HUGE all season, when it matters, especially in March. He won’t be the leading scorer or rebounder or in blocked shots, but he will do what needs to be done. How nice?

Great, great W….made everybody’s day and weekend. Don’t understand why Jones didn’t try and stay close to the hoop and get more involved in 2nd half. Davis had 2nd most mins. and only shot 6 times…what is up with that?

13: With all due respect, you’re crazy. No team will ever go undefeated. There is too much parity in today’s game. The 96′ Cats were the best team to ever take the floor and they couldn’t even run the table, losing 2 games that year. Losses are going to come sooner or later and most likely next Saturday. IU is MUCH improved and Assembly Hall is a VERY tough place for an opposing team, especially a team full of Freshmen.
