Poor Defense and Turnovers leave the Cats without a Chance

UK’s defense showed that they need A LOT of work after giving up 468 yards of offense in a 32-14 loss to the Dirty Birds in the Governor’s Cup. Louisville began the game with a 99-yard touchdown drive and never looked back. Probably the most important matchup of the night was U of L’s offensive line vs. UK’s defensive line, and the DLine lost miserably. Louisville controlled the line of scrimmage, and showed that the Defense needs to be taught how to tackle again.

However UK’s offense was night and day better than last season. The no huddle offense led by Max Smith was actually fun to watch, but 2 fumbles inside the Louisville 30, left the Cats empty handed on one too many possessions to keep the game close. Max finished the game  going 35-51 for 280 yards and 2 TDs, while giving the Wildcat faithful some entertaining offense to look forward to in the upcoming weeks.

Who is the “Coach in Waiting” I hope it is Rich Brooks, we have fallen completely to the bottom of the SEC in Football. It is a low day for UK Football, how many days until basketball season, this is a 3 win team maybe 4 max and I really wish we could put a better product on the field. Maybe Cal could recruit for the football team and sell UK.

Positives are offense maximillion and possibly more points in the future if they can catch most passes. The defense is what get us every year.. Please bench Nellums or make him run extra laps something, He has been so overmatched his entire career.Go Cats. Go tackle Somebody.

Lost both sides of the line, one by a lot, one by less. Coach “Strong” has instilled a “strong” mentality. Watch him on the sidelines and compare him to Joker. Joker is mild. Paying enough for Boise State’s coach to come here is our only hope.

Well, let’s hear from you all you Joker apologists…come on…I challenged you in the off season to produce something that you have seen from a football standpoint for any hope Joker would succeed…and nothing. Now, let’s hear your excuses…even Matty Jones drank the cool aid listening to Joker tell us again, before the season starts, how great his team looked. Who were some of the guys…well, all the running backs…U of L killed us on rushing…Bud Dupree on defense…he played lazy and disinterested…no heart or aggression on the defensive side of the ball. Offense, still dominated by screens and flat routes. Face it, Joker has ruined this program. I am to the point that I actually hope we lose each game for the long term good of the program…losses to Kent St and WKU would have to get Joker fired now, right? That will help the program in the long run, because all we are doing now is committing football suicide. Bring in Petrino…he would have these guys playing much harder, and could do wonders with this offense NOW. Nothing will hurt this program more than if we keep this worthless coach.

UK still showing the same old offense as last year, screen after screen – no running game. Cannot survive in the SEC with that. As usual, no defense. Looks like another 3-9 season, maybe at best 4-8. Can they get better? Is this a coaching or player problem or both?

Think about it… lets say we make the field goal, and don’t fumble the ball when were about to score. Then we’ve got a tie game. Then instead of going for it at the end, we kick a field goal. Then we’ve got ourselves a ballgame, possibly a win. Our offense actually moved the ball, and the special teams were good. Yes, the defense sucked, but they can’t be this bad all year. They will improve. I still say we win 6 and make a bowl.

I’ve been seeing this coming for a long time now fellas. It’s tough, but remember, it’s one less game we have to deal with Joker being our coach. Everything you saw out there was the results of poor coaching. I’m not talking all about in-game coaching, either. I’m talking about doing the recruiting, scouting, preparation, and most of all having the flexibility to change the attack efficiently and quickly. The sample size of games is enough to confirm: We can’t be a winner with Joker.

Maybe so #33,I will give you that, but is joker the answer? Does anyone think the fans will support him this year? Coach Strong called off the dogs in the second half by taking out the starting team, or it would have been a 40 point loss, (Bridgewater scored on 5 of 6 possesions), UK still couldn’t make any ground up. He was trying to do joker a favor so he wouldn’t make him look too bad, thus he could do it again to him next year, but uk is so terrible they couldn’t even score. Why do we have a football program that rakes in money and still sucks on a terminal basis? I’ll tell you why, the sheep come out and support it. Keep marching to the tailgates! 33. Who is the answer then??? You come up with reasons that so and so is “not the answer”? That’s all you apologists do, you just state reasons as to why this person and that person is not the answer. Just who is? Because it certainly isn’t Joker. You probably didn’t think Calipari was the answer either and sited Memphis as a reason why. Glad you don’t make decisions. People like you would make sure we buried the program.

All that said, I’m glad Joker is now on the way out! The hiring of Petrino would undoubtedly make us the most media hated school of all-time! I’d like an un and comer along the lines of James Franklin. Not James Franklin, but along the lines. Who’s out there!

I have been on Joker’s side since day one. No longer. Sure, two fumbles really hurt us, but going for a fake punt on 4th and long with a freshman punter and expecting him to run for nearly 30 yds in Louisville territory and then not taking the field goal in the 4th quarter to make it a two possession game is just mind boggling. The coaching decisions hurt us more today than any other aspect of the game. It’s time for Joker to go.

  55. Why
    7:25 pm September 2, 2012 Permalink

Offense failed to complete every time they needed to. Defense failed to stop every time they needed to. There really isn’t any true positive there. Who cares if they completed X number of baby passes. They didn’t put it on the board so it’s pointless. Joker punts on 4th and short and fakes on 4th and 14. Backwards ass play calling there. The defense showed no heart. We barely glimpsed anyone except the same failed players from last year. Morgan newton at wildcat?!? Really?!!! Getting thumped by 18 even when strong calls off the dogs early.. ESPN basically trashed us with every comment. This program is not heading in the right direction, it’s about to implode. If joker doesn’t right the ship this week and isn’t fired by mid season, the fans won’t show up at all.. Point blank period.

The whole staff needs to be fired. Kentucky is always steps behind. We improve the QB play but can’t call a play past the line of scrimmage. The defense has gotten worse under Minter. It doesn’t help that Trevathan is gone but the defense was lifeless today. Bridgewater had all day to throw. NO pressure at all on him. The secondary was even worse. They just let anyone and everyone catch a pass and walk it into the end zone. UK football is always like this. One step forward and two steps back. Where are all the idiots now that said we’ll never go back to this? Well here we are back to the Curry days.

Anyone that says anything positive about this staff is a complete moron and should off themselves. We LOD’ers tried to tell you but you wouldn’t listen. We knew making Joker HCIW was going to end badly. There’s no amount of time you can give Joker to turn things around. It’s not going to happen!! He’s an idiot and needs to resign or be fired!

49- No coach, at any cost that UK will pay or can afford, will take on this task. It is a losing battle to get UK out of the SEC basement, especially for a name guy with a reputation for winning at stake. Combine those facts with UK’s current facilities (while nice) not being on par with that of the other SEC schools (except maybe Vandy). Combine that with the fact that UK football has little to no support or drive or even a vision or plan to succeed anywhere but at the bank, and then I will ask you your very same question. What coach will come here?

I agree we need bottom-up change. But I’m not really expecting UK to get the same sense of urgency to simply compete and win that we as fans feel.

47, you are dead on…I want to support the players, but they are getting a raw deal, worse than the fans are. I know it sucks, but short term pain for long term gain. We will whiff against Kent St and WKU…and if that gets Joker fired, I hope it happens, so that we can start our progression instead of continuing this regression. I hate it for the players…

I am currently listening to Joker on the post game…it is almost as painful to hear him try to communicate as it is to watch him coach. He has no clue about how to interact with people…and that is obvious on the field. I have watched as many games this weekend as I could…I did not see another team look as clueless on the field as us, and I did not hear other announcers make fun of a team as much as ours. I am still waiting to hear from the Joker apologists to see what their logic is for keeping Joker past tomorrow.

If Strong would have left his starters in, especially Bridgewater, UL would have beaten us by 50. Strong has too much class for that so Joker should call him and thank him for saving his job for another week. I agree with 53, why did Joker not kick the field goal and cut the lead to 15 with I think 6 minutes left? Anything can happen, we could kick an onside kick and recover and then things get interesting. Oh, never mind, Strong would have just put his starters back in.

The definition of the word TORTURE is another post game show with Ralph throwing softballs at Choker. Not much was said about the lousy performance of the D and nothing at all about pass defense. If this wasn’t the worse defensive performance these eyes have ever witnessed, it was awful close to it. UL would have clobbered us if they hadn’t substituted and taken off the accelerator the second half.

Its rare in life to find that “Everyone” is wrong. And “Everyone” from fans, to experts kept telling us that UK Football would suck. And as it turns out.. they were right. I honestly believe the fans would rally around these players if a change was made now. And in my opinion.. that will be the only way to right this sinking ship.. if the SEC had a performace clause in thier contracts.. meaning SEC teams actually had to be competitive to receive a full share of the conference revenue.. I bet we would have seen changes long ago

84- Joker at UK for Strong is like Kragthorpe at UL for Brooks. The longer he’s there, the easier it is to beat your rival school.

Charlie called off the dogs b/c beating Joker senseless only expediates the process that replaces Joker.

Defense today reminded me of the Bill Curry days.Couldn’t tackle, couldn’t stop the run and when the Cards threw a pass, there wasn’t a defender within 10 yards of the receiver.I swear, their wouldn’t be a defender in the picture screen on their passes. This was pathetic. All we heard about was all these playmakers on defense and I didn’t see one play that made me think that.

I said this in an earlier thread.. Petrino was known here for his hatred for UK. Called UK ‘slapdicks’ and such.. Theres no way he would come there unless hes about to go broke from all his daliances with college volleyball players.. Is he a great offensive mind.. Yes, but hes also a douche and does every place he goes to dirty..

Where does the thought that Petrino is acceptable and in demand come from? He put his mistress, the wife of another coach at his school, on university payroll. That’s far worse than anything Mike Leach did and it took him 2 years to be picked up by the worst team in the PAC 10.

#65- TOTALLY disagree. Maybe you haven’t noticed, but Vandy – yes, VANDY – seems to have climbed out of the cellar with a new coach/direction and they don’t even have an Athletic Director! Barnfart caused this fiasco by succumbing to Brook’s wishes re: annointing Joker. Maybe, just maybe, the new UK president will have the cajones to fire Branfart (as Clueless Lee should have) hire a real professional to run the Athletic Department and allow him to bring in a “real” head coach. After all, National Rifle Championships don’t help with season tickets sales at Commonwealth.

110 — I don’t really think what he did was that big of a deal. Sorry. It’s certainly a forgivable offense, and he is as good a football coach as you will find today. That’s why I think he is in demand. He’s a much better coach than Mike Leach.

JayCee… Agree with you on all fronts. I don’t think Petrino would ever come to UK, UK wouldn’t pony up, but I don’t know if it would be the greatest PR move either. Media wise, could you imagine the bulls eye of having Cal and Petrino at the same school. If one faltered up, it could be a complete landslide.

It’s Mitch Barnhart’s job to know the up and comers. There is someone who would do it. Someone like James Franklin (not James Frankin) but someone like him. A coach with a chip on his shoulder, with a bubbly spirit like Tom Crean/James Franklin or Bruce Pearl. It would be annoying, at first, but UK fans would absolutely love a coach who would be that way. It’s Barnhart’s job to know who those coaches are. And we use that to get them!

What I learned over the weekend, Tenn.,S.C.,Miss. St, Vandy…….well basically the entire SEC seems to have improved since last year, not us. We are officially the worst program in the SEC. You can”t tell me there aren’t hundreds of successful coaches out there that wouldn’t want a shot in the SEC. Bobby P maybe tonight but not so much in the morning. Hey Mitch, here’s a name out there,Rhoades at Iowa St., since you missed out on Leach to keep our infamous coach in waiting. He would bring at least 8 wins each year, it’s a start.

I can’t be that upset with the outcome. I thought we still had a shot even after the first fumble. The offense looked MUCH better, but the defense was embarrassing. I don’t remember us getting gashed for that many big plays in a long time. The d-backs played awful! I will give credit to Bridgewater, he’s pretty darn good. Fire the staff??? Be realistic. The season can still be a positive. The Defense can be fixed.
