Playboy Picks Kentucky to Reach Championship Game

I don’t read Playboy, but if I did, it would be for the college basketball articles. In this month’s feature on college basketball predictions, analyst John Gasaway predicts that Kentucky will make it to the national championship game this spring, eventually losing to Michigan State.

Gasaway, like Calipari, knows that he’s watching a young team who has yet to figure everything out, saying that he thinks the team needs at least a month before they can accurately be judged. However, Gasaway did think that it was “an overreaction” that the Wildcats dropped out of the Top 25 after losing to Notre Dame and Baylor last week; he himself dropped the Cats from number two to number fifteen. Not sure Calipari would agree with that statement, but hopefully it’ll be a moot point if the Cats reappear in the polls this week after two wins.

As for the rest of the tournament, Gasaway thinks it will unfold a little like this:

Sweet 16: Indiana over Marquette; Kansas over Butler; Kentucky over Arizona; Duke over Pittsburgh; Florida over UCLA; Gonzaga over Louisville; Michigan State over Syracuse; N.C. State over Ohio State.

Elite 8: Indiana over Kansas; Kentucky over Duke; Florida over Gonzaga; Michigan State over N.C. State.

Final Four: Kentucky over Indiana; Michigan State over Florida.

Title game: Michigan State over Kentucky.

I feel weird that I just wrote this post. @KristenGeilKSR

This guy is from Colorado, isn’t he? Because he must be high or something. Let’s see…. UCLA in the Sweet 16? Gonzaga over Louisville? Michigan State winning it all?… He would be lucky if a single one of those happened, let along all three.

The worrying thing is the seeding. If UK doesn’t beat Lullville – a tall order at the moment as it will take a consistent game to do it and they haven’t played a consistent game yet – the SEC is down, so you won’t have a lot of quality wins to grab. Florida looks strong so at least a split with them would help. Baylor isn’t playing like they did against UK so that loss could really pull UK down in the seeding too.

I tell you who’d scare me in the tournament, and the committee would love to set it up, would be Minnesota. Exactly the kind of game Tubby could win, they might be favored if it happened now. All that guff about Tubby by UK fans come back as karma. Hopefully the fates will be kinder.

I love this guy. He knows the bbn will buy the magazine in boxes now.His predictions are a bit off i’d say. Ucla might not even make the tourney. As much as i don’t like Louisville, i do beleive they are final four material elite 8 at worse.

I like Gasaway a lot. You can read him regularly here: (Note: This isn’t a link to Playboy.)

I’m a little surprised by his analysis at this point. I do think the Cats’ upside this year includes an Elite Eight, with a chance at a Final Four, but that would require major development between now and March from every single player in the rotation. Not one of them is close to where he needs to be for that to happen. I believe in Cal’s coaching ability, and think they’ve got a legitimate shot to be that good, but no way would I bet money right now at even odds that they will be one of the two best teams in the country by the end of the year. They’re at least as likely to have 10 losses and go out in the second round.

And yes, other than North Carolina, it’s a bad year for UK’s rivals, in that they’re basically all very good. Indiana, Duke, Louisville, and Florida look like the four best teams in the country right now, with Kansas just behind. Playing the Cardinals in Louisville in three weeks, even without Dieng, looks daunting. And yes, believe it or not, Tubby’s Minnesota is probably better than Kentucky right now.

Take the long view. Some years will be like 2011, which ended great but was fairly rough along the way, and included 9 losses. Some years will be like 2012, when we had fewer losses all season than we already have this year. Celebrate last year’s championship, watch for growth and development of this year’s team, and support the Cats – especially when they’re struggling. It’s easy to be a fan when it’s all going our way. Don’t punk out.

Playboy doesn’t know basketball, just implanted girls. This Gasaway dude doesn’t have a clue. Michigan St. is turrible. IU and Michigan are the two beat teams out there with Duke and Florida close behind. UK will mostly lose in the Elite 8. The Cards are destined to do the same.

This guy is dreaming. I just see a team that has limited potential this year. Outside shooting and free throw shooting are dismal. There are some great athletes on this team, but to win a title, you have to have virtually no weaknesses. There are too many weaknesses on this team. I will say this, if this team can win a title, Cal should be Coach of the Year.

I would consider this a fantastic run, especially getting revenge on Duke and knocking off Indiana, and though a title loss would hurt, there aren’t many coaches out there I can stand losing a title to, but Izzo would be one.

Aint gonna happen, plain and simple. We will have a nice year, but there will not be a final four in the cards for this team. Not enough depth.
