Pitino to the Big East: “Get your divorce papers ready or make this marriage work”

Today on “As the Conferences Turn,” we found out that Maryland and Rutgers will be moving to the Big Ten, further shuffling the conference realignment landscape.

Not surprisingly, Rick Pitino had a few things to say about it during his press conference this afternoon. Pitino told reporters that Maryland’s move caught him off-guard, but that if the ACC is looking for a new member, they shouldn’t look any further than the scenic smokestacks of UofL’s campus:

“If I’m the ACC, I’d want Louisville to be the first school I’d even think about.”

“I haven’t come across a school like this in long time with so much to offer and so little interest; the SEC, ACC, and Big Ten should be after us. … To me, Louisville is a hidden gem in college athletics.”

Some of the teams the ACC is rumored to be considering include Louisville, Connecticut, South Florida and Cincinnati. While Pitino said that he was “all in” for the Big East, he conceded there are other sports (football) to consider and hopes that the matter is settled quickly. In fact, he compared it to…

“We’ve got to figure out who wants in, who wants out. Get your divorce papers ready or make this marriage work.

Sigh. Just stay away from those comparisons, Rick.

Would suspect Roy and K might have some reservations about adding Louisville to the ACC basketball round robin. Seems like South Florida would provide more natural rivalries among current ACC schools than Louisville.

ACC is their only realistic option out of those 3, only because the ACC will have to drastically lower their standards just to stay afloat. It will be the Big East, Act 2. Louisville academics are terrible so they don’t have a shot in hell at the B1G. SEC won’t take them because Kentucky wouldn’t allow it, but also because they wouldn’t bring in more TV sets and their athletic dept is just not that attractive.

    Louisville is screwed.

They don’t meet academic requirements for Big10 or ACC (unless ACC changes their requirements). Plus, the ACC would go after UConn way before Louisville. They can draw more money from TV in the northeast than they can in Louisville.

Only hope for Louisville is the Big12 because the SEC would never happen with UK there.

    9) The talent is in place to return to 6-7 wins a year and a bowl game if we get a halfway decent coach. That’s more than Louisville could ever hope for in the SEC. It’s a level of competition that they have never experienced before.

#3… no way, not happening. Its all about the money. In order for the SEC to get more money they’d have to add more markets for TV, etc. UK already has that market filled. If SEC adds anybody it’d be some University like West Va, Virginia, Michigan, Ohio St. Places were they could add a new market.

Louisville is good this season, yes. And we suck this season, yes. But Louisville wouldn’t be joining the SEC THIS SEASON (I actually agree that they’d never be let into the SEC at all, just speculating). It wasn’t long ago that we owned them in football AND basketball, and as much as some of the more vehement Joker haters hate to admit it, he’s brought in some great young talent at skill positions. Within a year or two we’ll be back beating Louisville on a regular basis.

They should never allow Louisville into the SEC because the respective fanbases of both schools would not survive a possible two games per year, every year.

Remember the crapslinging before the regular season game last year? The crap before the Final Four game last season? It’s a bad, bad idea. Louisville is stuck in the Big East, no matter how much Rick tries to whore himself out.

12-for now. How many games did UK win in a row before the current 2 win streak Looserville has? Also, what will happen when Strong is gone (which will happen if UL continues to be good). U of L is not a better job than UK, I would say that they are pretty much equal in their job rankings, but I can’t because UK is in a founding member of a far superior conference and U of L is pretty much an independent school (how many conferences have they played in the last 20 years? It looks like they’ll soon change up again.).

If I’m U of L, I’m trying to get into the Big 12. Its the #2 football conference which means $. $ equates to longevity. They need to find a conference they can stay in for more than a decade (eg.. independent, Conf USA, Big East).

  30. WildcatByTheGraceOfGod
    4:29 pm November 19, 2012 Permalink

Look, several have said this before, even Jones has talked on the show about this. UofL does not offer any large TV market for any surrounding conference that the existing conference doesn’t already have. UofL fans are naive to think they have so much to offer any conference. Outside the city itself, there is VERY LITTLE following of the programs. There is relatively no TV market outside the city itself. While their teams may be having good success in many sports, and mainly their 2 major sports of MBBall & FBall, there is not a following to attract the other conferences.

This is why Jim Boeheim made the comments that if Rick believed what he was saying he’s a damn fool, nobody asked them because he knows good and well they’d jump at the first chance. Think about this, Mitch McConnell spent public tax dollars/time to court the Big12 and they wouldn’t even remotely listen. There just isn’t any upside to bringing them into any conference, it’s all gain for UofL they don’t bring anything to the table.

This is also why any good coach that succeeds in football leaves for a better job in a real conference. While I respect Coach Strong for standing good on his word, he’s an idiot to not go to Arky when they wanted him so badly.

The Big East is the fastest sinking ship in the country, and the rats are jumping off as fast as possible….at least the smart ones are jumping off. Looks like the Cards will be back in the Metro/Conf. USA scene before we know it!

Some of your remarks regarding Louisville, are a bit stupid. Sometimes look at things seriously they have a very good athletic dept across the board, one of the most lucrative money making athletics in the country, a very passionate fanbase, a committment to winning in all sports. Another thing their womans team bb for crying out loud played in a championship game. Not too mention we would be in the exact same positon if we were not in the sec from the beginning. Thats a fact. This state sucks with television numbers.

The city of Louisville isn’t a big enough TV market to attract big money TV contracts & the city doesn’t have a big enough demographic to justify giving UL a big TV conference contract. The fact UL isn’t a strong academic school hurts their chances at the ACC even more.

With UConn being located in the TV market they are located, UConn will get the offer with Cincinnati getting the second offer.

UL has been trying to become Big Time in football for years, ever since Howard told them they were on a collision course with a national championship. The point is they can’t even fill their stadium now with a ranked team. There were 12,000 empty seat at their last home game and I believe I saw many empty seats at their basketball game against Miami,O. They have a lot of “fair weather” fans. Is that what Pitino calls a “hidden gem?” It’s interesting how Arkansas fired Petrino for his affair and UL did nothing to Rick but blame his dinner partner at a certain eating establishment on Frankfort Ave. in Louisville.

Did you know the War Against Northern Aggression actually STARTED in Missouri? Did you know that St. Louis, Missouri’s largest
city, was founded by French people who went up the river from New Orleans, making it full of the same beautiful Southern culture
found in New Orleans, from blues to great food to architecture? You might want to look up the history of Frank and Jesse James, as well.
Missouri is a South as South can be. Read some history before popping off your mouth about what’s next to what, aight? Truth is,
Mizzou and Texas A&M have way more right to be in the SEC than Vandy, Auburn, and Loserville combined. Amen, and pass

And yes you had a 4 year streak against UL, and UL had a 4 year streak before that. Truth is, as much as you want us to be little brother, since the last 10 years, we have been anything but.
