Pitino says Cal teaches young talent better than “any of us”

During his postgame presser, Rick Pitino praised John Calipari for the job he’s done with another young team, saying that Cal “does it better than any of us could do. I wouldn’t want to do it.” He especially praised Archie Goodwin and Nerlens Noel, whom he called a future number one pick: “I thought we did a good job on Noel. He’s going to be the number one pick some day. Since I did such great job drafting with the Celtics, I’d take him.” Ha. ha. ha.

When asked about the rivalry, Pitino said it was important for the team, but more so for the fans: “It’s a real important game for the fans. We want to beat Kentucky very bad, but it’s not as important to us as the fans.” After another swig of coconut water, Rick gave his view on the rivalry: “We have great respect for them. There’s no bitterness. We don’t denigrate Kentucky.”

Despite the amount of blue that got in, Rick said that Kentucky fans never really had an impact on the game: “Fortunately tonight, the (Cats fans in the building) never came alive.”

Rick just couldn’t end things without a small dig at Cal. When asked about Cal’s comments that the Cards are the odds-on favorite to win the title, he quipped: “Forget about all those nice things I said about John.

    RP is correct.

    Kentucky has 1 and dones.

RP does not espouse that philosophy.

This year belongs to Rick Pitino.

Did you see that sick look on Pitino’s face when the Cats pulled within two points. He knows his team is overrated with less upside opportunity than most other upper ranked teams.

That was a UK win. Free throws we’re the difference and UL should be ashamed of the effort and outcome. The Cards are not a championship team. UK will be miles ahead of everyone come March!

If this team is going to play well in March, Alex must come alive. There are growing pains for all frosh, but Cal needs more from Poy.

Also, I hate that UL, IU or Duke is probably gonna win the title. Of the 3, I might even root for UL.

the “coaches young talent” quip is clearly a dig @ Cal, part of the whole “i dont coach one and dones” meme. Rick doesnt coach one and dones by choice,
he does it because he has to. the top recruits dont go to UL, thus no 1 and dones…

Oh come on, That Was NOT a dig at Cal!! It was a joke!! Pitino does NOT Ever want his teams to think they are good so they will not get comfortable. The last thing he wants is ANYBODY telling his team something like that.
Pitino has ALWAYS spoke of UK with respect!! The hate is on the UK side, not his!!

#6 I disagree that UL is overrated. They tore it up early and we did a great job of coming back. If anything I think we are underrated. Both of these teams will be very good in March.

YES, Coach Cal is doing a great job over Camp Cal time and our team is starting to “get it”. Though we lost due to TO’s and FT shooting, WCS showed a tenacity that made me incredibly proud; Archie, while a work in progress, nonetheless will be the guy we go to for a big shot a the end of games – he’ll be “Big Shot Archie” in the NCAAT; Harrow has improved and will improve enough to be a steady force – needs to work on leadership; Nerlens will become the team leader come March… WATCH OUT IN MARCH!!! GO BIG BLUE!!!! Team made us all proud today!

    Lets put things in perspective
UL had a veteran team with lots of returning players from a Final Four Team
UK lost their top 6 players from a year ago
    UL is ranked 3rd
    UK isn’t ranked
UK looked like a confused lost team not long ago against Baylor.
    UL had home court advantage
This was a MUST WIN for UL

and UK only lost by 3 points and could’ve won if they hit Free Throws

UL won this game but their title hopes are gone. They won’t even be better than UK come March

No one has more upside than UK from now until March, NO ONE!!

and the best UL can do with a veteran top ranked team in their own house is a 3 point win

Sorry UL but Flush your title hopes down the drain. You might have beaten UK today but UK also took something away from you as well, your title hopes

Can’t believe our fans are crying about the refs. uofl’s whole team was in foul trouble and the reason we came back in the first place. We made a ton of three’s and got uofl’s best players on the bench. uofl had some bad calls go against them as well. Siva did not touch goodwin on the three and Dieng’s first fould was brutal. But our fans only see the bad calls that went against us and forget about the bad calls that went against the other team.

    UK can’t hit Free Throws
Poyhtress isn’t playing up to his potential
Harrow is still trying to get back into the swing of things
    UK committed to many turnovers

UK only lost by 3 to a “Very Good” Veteran UL team ranked 3rd in the country in the Yum Center.

Yeah I like UK’s chances in March compared to UL’s chances.

  43. WOW
    7:31 pm December 29, 2012 Permalink

UL fans can’t use “our guys were in foul trouble” excuse. That is a result of Pitino’s style. His defensive style is to play physical, shove, push, pull, with the idea the refs won’t call them all.

That’s why UL players foul a lot, they are suppose to, it’s part of their coaches style. So don’t get mad the refs called them – they could’ve called a lot more

Cheer up Wildcat fans, Rick Pitino says this Kentucky team is better than their ranking that they are better than they were two weeks ago and will just keep on getting better! I’ve noticed since the UC-Xavier brawl, the war of words between Pitino and Cal have cooled down. I don’t know if this is a directive from both schools’ administration or something they’ve agreed to on their own.

#49 – No. Jones showed a will to win.
