Pitino is overworking his players, yells at reporter

It has been a general assumption for a while now at Louisville, but now a former player and a former coach have come forward and said Pitino pushes his team too hard in practice. In his latest report on the Cards, the Courier-Journal’s C.L. Brown has two interesting quotes about Rick Pitino’s practices:

Denny Crum: “Whether it’s right or wrong, Rick’s got the reputation of overworking his kids. And I don’t know if that’s true or not – I have no way to know that. I don’t go to their practices and stuff, so I have no idea what they’re doing.”

Preston Knowles: “You’re playing at 80 percent like the whole season” … “That’s Coach P’s forte. He plays hard, he’s going to outwork people and he’s going to outtough people. It’s a mind-set. It’s tough playing there. You love playing for Louisville, but going that hard and that intense every day, basically six or seven times a week, it can wear on you.”

Rick Pitino read, or at least heard about, Brown’s article and went off on a rant at the end of this morning’s press conference. Pitino reportedly told Brown that his article “hurt recruiting.”

Last time I checked, it wasn’t C.L. Brown’s job to recruit players to Louisville. Way to play the blame game, Coach.

Read C.L.’s piece here.

And telling recruits you are done in 4-5 years doesn’t hurt recruiting??? The guy and his antics are mind boggling! Are we sure Sypher didn’t have syphilis or something because Pitino has made more boneheaded, mindless moves that a person in their right mind would never make this year then I can remember. They say syphilis takes a while to get to the brain.

I’m so sick of Rick and his whining and crying toward the media. What if had to deal with Tipton everyday again? The fact that one of his most loyal former players is saying he’s an obsessive-compusive freak is what’s riling him. Does he not know that the recruits already know he’s a lying, cheating, grumpy old coach. Is anything ever Ricks fault?

Nothing wrong with hard work but sounds kinda like the Billy Clyde thing we went through. And look at all the injuries they’ve had and we had during the two BCG years.

Yup recruitment is suffering at UofL because of this article. Every UofL target in the 2012 class, minus Terry Rozier, got in their time-machine, charged up the flux capaciter to 1.21 gigawatts, and accelerated to 88 mph to read this article and commit elsewhere.

What “hurts” their recruiting is that they are Louisville…NOT Kentucky. Why would any player in his right mind want to come to Louisville, a “commuter” school, and play for a washed-up, lying, immoral creep like Pitino? I hope he stays there for a LONG time.

@Boots45: In the first place, we’d be “up in arms” if our program was going in the direction UL is headed. In the second place, if Joe B. Hall and John Wall were quoted in the article lending credibility to such claims, we’d have to take a second look at them.

Speaking of Tipton, It would have been nice if Tipton would have questioned tubby’s horrid recruiting, ten loss seasons, the transfers, team turmoil, etc…

But NNNOOOOOO, tubby got a free pass for the most part.

    Folks,
If you are going to waste time hating, hate tubby! Rick Pitino put Kentucky basktball back on top of the mountain. tubby brought KY to its knees!

Like it or not, Rick is right about the article. It will kill recruiting. Now Purvis and Webster-Chan will probably decommitt. Quincy Miller will go who knows where. I’d venture to say Teague is no longer an UL lock after this article.

“Pitino said Blackshear needs to lose 10 pounds in two weeks to be able to play.” How’s that for recruiting, Ricky??? I’m all for tough practices, but that’s extreme. Definitely not a player first program. Hmmmm… Louisville FIRST… to ruin a kid’s body.

Here’s Rick’s quote at the end of the article, “The way I handle it is the way I handled it in the pros.”

Of course he wants to remind everyone he once coached in the pros…

Hey Rick, how’d that work out for ya? Oh yeah, you’re coaching at second-tier university that plays it’s home games in a chicken shack…

It’s not too hard to figure out. Pitino can vent all his pent-up, private failures and frustrations on his players and the players can do little about it.

He needs the players more than the players need him. Any prospect should see that.

  29. Bob Day
    2:46 pm January 13, 2012 Permalink

Drew, you really need to correct the following: “…but now a former player and a former coach have come forward and said Pitino pushes his team too hard in practice.”

Denny Crum has NEVER said Rick either has pushed, or pushes, his team too hard in practice. Upon inquiry, he was simply making an observation on how Pitino’s practice’s are commonly perceived/suspected. Preston Knowles’ didn’t say the coach pushed his players too hard either, nor did C.L. Brown.

Larry O’Banon told me that he would get taunted by Pitino his first couple years, was the butt of Pitino’s jokes. “You guys want to be professionally basketball players and work your asses off, or do you want to just go to class, study, hang out and be an architect like Larry over here?”
Then O’Banon found a shooting coach, fixed his shot, then finally Pitino at least treated him like a man.

I hate Quick Rick and I dislike UofL even more but lets not make ourselves look bad in this little dust up. I just listened to the so-called rant and frankly if that’s a rant I rant a dozen times or more a day. Pitino is right (Gawd that hurt), the 20 hour rule prevents coaches from over working the kids and when you don’t have enough people to practice it’s impossible to get to crazy. If you guys want to skewer the SOB for the Karen Cypher thing or any other ligitimate reason, I’m on board but this is a non-starter.

  35. Galtoid
    9:04 pm January 13, 2012 Permalink

It isn’t the 20 hour rule. It is the fact that Pitino demands a certain body fat percentage before you go on the court in his system. He projects his own fitness obsession onto players who are only 19 or 20 years old, some of whom will never have a 4% body fat, and would most likely be better players if they were heftier. Just look at Swopshire. He is simply not the same player he was a year ago. Pitino’s system breaks his players down. He is the D. Wayne Lukas of College Basketball.
