Pippen Calls This Great

This post is basically an excuse to show you that video.  Chump.

Perhaps the worst part of LeBron likely winning a ring this year is the fact that, after his playoffs performance, everyone is going to start back the ‘is LeBron better than Jordan,’ talk.  And let’s be honest – he’s not.

But Scottie Pippen might disagree.  On Mike and Mike earlier today, Pippen told them that MJ was “probably the greatest scorer of all time” but that “LeBron James may be the greatest player.”

I will give James credit – he has gone from anti-clutch to incredibly clutch these playoffs.  Some of his performances have been spectacular.  And as much as I would like to see Dirk get one, he’s likely on the way to the first of a number of championships in his career.  But greatest of all time?  On the brink of your second finals with your frankenstein team isn’t the time to declare that.

Win six and we’ll talk.

Rings speak to the quality of a basketball team, not a basketball player. LeBron is the best player currently, and will end his career as the best that we’ve ever seen.

Pippen has made no secret about his resentment to being 2nd to MJ. That wasn’t a compliment to James, it was a shot at Jordan. Lebron is the greatest player? I seem to remember Lebron quitting in the playoffs last year. The greatest player doesn’t do that. Pippen is a tool.

Lebron will never be Jordan. Even though Pippen and Rodman were good players they are not the caliber that Wade and Bosh are. I honestly think Jordan had a less talented supporting cast than James does. If Lebron was better, he could have carried the Cavs to a champioship. Lebron had good enough players surrounding him. Wade already has a ring so what makes anyone think this would be all because LBJ is on the team now. Dont get me wrong. Lebron is a great player with enormous amounts of talent but Jordan will always be atop the list

    2. Lebron is a better defensive player and more versatile than Jordan but Jordan’s will to win, and scoring set him apart from anybody else in history and he was ahead of his time.
    3. Every player in the NBA flops, it has been part of the game for a while, Jordan had more favorable calls in his career than anyone.

honestly the comparison is fair. MJ never won without a rediculously strong supporting cast that included all stars such a Scott Pippen (a dream teamer, who really likes to show his value by discounting Jordan’s), Dennis Rodman and Horace Grant. Along with great players such as BJ Armstrong, Ron Harper and Charles Oakley. Lebron finally has the team to support him, so now its time to produce. Which, for now he is in fact doing. Let him win at least 3 then we can see how he stacks up.

5.) Even though he has better #2 and #3 talent with wade and bosh you have to go down the line further. Chalmers and company are not nearly as good as the other role players jordan had. They had more of a supporting cast. Which the main problem in the begginng of the season was that would there be enough left. They have stepped up in the playoffs but in no way are they a good supporting cast

    #8 Hey Durr

    1. Lebron is not a better defensive player than Jordan. “Michael Jordan, Gary Payton, Kevin Garnett, and Kobe Bryant share the record for most NBA All-Defensive first team selections with nine.” – Wikipedia Lebron James? 3 times…granted he has a chance to maybe catch Jordan. *Oh, Jordan had three steals titles too.
    2. Jordan never outright flopped and then gave the “wink” that says, “tricked ya”. Now, if you said Jordan and Lebron are fouled harder than everyone else in the league and both get a lot of questionable calls you may have had something. Reggie Miller was a flopper!
    3. Does it really get old? This doesn’t sound old… in fact it sounds like he belongs at the top of the list of Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, and Russell.

“Jordan’s individual accolades and accomplishments include five MVP awards, ten All-NBA First Team designations, nine All-Defensive First Team honors, fourteen NBA All-Star Game appearances, three All-Star Game MVP awards, ten scoring titles, three steals titles, six NBA Finals MVP awards, and the 1988 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award. He holds the NBA records for highest career regular season scoring average (30.12 points per game) and highest career playoff scoring average (33.45 points per game).”

Lot of stupidity in these comments. To compare the Lebron’s supporting cast with the Cavs to the Bulls is so so dumb. Look at the Bulls when MJ retired the first team. They were a good team without him. Look at the Cavs this year. They were terrible. Who is better? We can’t even really discuss it until Lebron’s career is close to over. Too many people put MJ on this NEVER EVER AGAIN CAN HE BE TOUCHED OMG DONT EVEN TRY pedestal. Every generation thinks their best player is the best ever. In 50 years it will be someone else. Instead of ignorantly trying to bash Lebron because of your MJ fetish how about just appreciating one of the greatest players of all time doing serious work right now? Was MJ incredible? No question. Is Lebron? Absolutely. Leave it at that and enjoy greatness instead of getting butthurt because fanboys of either side get their panties is a bunch.

Its kind of like Cal, people will not give Lebron credit where it is due. Just because MJ, who was amazing, dominated an era of basketball that was fairly boring for the most part, doesn’t mean he can’t move over to second place when LeBron proves he better. I know some people do not like change, but there was a another greatest player ever before MJ was given the title. It is possible for someone to be better than him. Sometimes we give him too much credit, there is a bias toward him.

With that being said LBJ hasn’t proven it yet, but I’m confident he will before he steps foot on the court his last time.

Just speaking from my beliefs, I think a lot of people(not all, just majority) who are gung ho about LBJ being the best really were either too young or not around when Jordan was dominating the league. I know for me growing up whenever the Bulls were on TV you had to watch it because you knew there was a good chance you would witness a Jordan moment. —-

hmmmm boring? NBA in the 80’s & early 90’s was FAR better to watch than now. First off 20 years ago when Jordan won his first title there were less teams than now so the level of play was better. The league wasn’t full of raw talent that didn’t know how to play the game. Guys knew how to shoot. GO back just 5 years prior to that and the league was even better with even less teams.

The worst things that have happened to the NBA are…adding more teams, allowing younger kids in the league….and ESPN. ESPN began highligthing the dunks and spectacular plays and in turn kids today don’t know the fundementals as much as they did 30 years ago.

Is LeBron better? Who knows we will never get an apple to apples comaprision. Just like we won’t with Wilt(or Russell) vs. Jordan. LeBron is great and fun to watch but not nearly as fun to watch as Jordan (IMHO)

I get pissed every time someone says lebron is better than jordan. Please…Jordan was one of the best of ALL TIME. Lebron has been around for a couple years and done absolutely nothing. he had to go where wade already CARRIED a team to a championship. I honestly think wade is better than lebron. I have alot of hate for wade, and any older uk fan would know why, but he is amazing to watch. Once Wade and Lebron figure out how to play well together, they will be scary. If they had the role players around them, they would be something to get excited about.

I know this statement will get some folks pissed, but jordan wasn’t the best player of all time. He is the best player during his time, but those before him were so much better, in different ways. Pistol pete has to be one of the best of all time. Check out some of his videos on youtube. that’ll be never

if you’re on a good team, you should be able to win championships, if you’re as great as proposed

if you’re on a bad team, stat comparisons aren’t a good measurement because you’re going to perform higher as the clear cut leader

For instance, Lebron averaged more in nearly every category in the last 5 years, compared to this year

This very well may work out so that lebron does better in years to come, but I don’t expect it to as they build up more around him

Lebron has 10+ years left, he has all the time in the world to prove he is better. Until then, stop saying he is better than Jordan, and stop hating on Lebron. 53 the man gave Cleveland 7 of the greatest yrs the ever had or ever will have of basketball! He held an hour long pressor because its what the people wanted and he raised money for a good cause if he would have picked the Cavs the hour long pressor wouldn’t have been a big deal to people like you. If that and getting the city of Miami hype about basketball in the summer are his only Character flaws I think that’s pretty good. As for 66 coments you can’t get blood from a turnup! Jordan as great as he was wouldn’t have won a ring in Cleveland either!

I love how we hate Lebron James because he is one of the best players today and has a bit of an ego. Micheal Vick however gets a free pass.

    #77 I ain’t Jordan either, but I don’t hate him.
    Bottom line:
Jordan=charismatic, likeable,, God in a pair of Nikes.
Lebron=selfish, spoiled, egomaniac,,very good, but won’t be great on a Jordan level.

81- Charismatic, likable? You ever see the dudes HOF speech? Ever hear any other players talking about how he was a nice guy? Jordan was a prick. Epic ball player, but a prick. The only likeable thing about him was his winning. People ignore the first 6 years of Jordan’s career. Wait till LeBron has reached retirement before we compare them.

Also, if we measure greatness by the number of rings you have… Robert Horrey is the greatest player of all time.

Who is responsible for handing Micheal Jordan “The Greatest Player of All Time Award”? There is no doubt that he was “one” of the best but I am not convinced that he was “the” best. Here are a few manes to consider, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul Jabarr, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird,Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West to just name a few.Everyone wants to talk about all the championships that he won but keep in mind he didn’t win the most championships. Championships are won buy superior teams not by one individual player. Jordan stuggled to get a championship until he got some help.I bet alot of the old timers get really pissed by Jordan getting so much love as the best ever.

There has never, and probably won’t ever be another player with lebron’s skill set and athletic ability at 6’9″ and 260 lbs. Lebron and MJ aren’t the same kind of player, the comparison is dumb. The only player you can compare to MJ is Kobe based on size, position, and skill set, and he doesn’t match up. But lebron is one of a kind talent you just can’t compare to anything because he is the first of his kind. The only player that fits his mold is Magic, but he wasn’t the kind of freak physically and athletically as lebron.

Everyone on here who thinks lebron is not the best “basketball” player they have blinders on. At this stage in the careers lebron is better at literally every aspect if the game. Literally. Except intangibles which do actually relate to basketball skills. Lebron better shooter(way better than 26 year old Jordan), bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic. Oh yeah he is also 2-3 inches taller and weights about 60 more pounds. Athletes get better every year in every sport. Someone better than lebron will surface at some point. I know this is hypothetical, but if Jordan played for a mediocre team and the bulls didn’t surround him with talented players with same stats would this really even be a debate. I love Jordan I’m in my 30’s and he was my generation, but he is no where near as talented as lebron.

The logic of this argument of show me six titles is dumb anyways. That like saying that Horace grant is better than Barkley or Malone based on titles alone. Titles mean nothing in regards to being the best individual player in a team sport. I suppose trent folder is better than dan marino as well

I thought we liked LeBron. Wasn’t he the “Y” in Rupp Arena?

There will never be another Jordan, Magic, Bird, etc. There will also never be another LeBron, Kobe, Dirk, etc. All were/are great players and should be recognized individually for their greatness. I always chuckle when the talking heads start making comparisons.

  93. greatness=accomplishment not potential
    8:41 pm May 27, 2011 Permalink

This talk about Lebron being the greatest of all time is silly.

He is the best player in the world right now…but greatness is about what you accomplish, not your potential or talent.

He hasnt done anything to be called great, yet. He belongs with Charles Barkley and Steve Nash and Reggie Miller right now, awesome talents, top players, but not the in the conversation of who is the “greatest”

In fact, D.Wade should be higher ranked on who is the “greatest” than Lebron at this point because he led his team to winning it all.

By the way, Jordan won defensive player of the year!!!

Jordan was the best player for anyone who has played in their time period. But to say LeBron is not better than Jordan….please. If LeBron were to play in the 80″s and 90″s he would have been more unstoppable than Jordan. He is just to big and strong. But Jordan is the best player for his time than any other player. But no, Jordan in his prime could not beat LeBron in his prime.

I have saw Russell, Chamberlain, Abdul Jabbar, West, Bird, Magic, Dr J, ETC, not just watched some highlights but watched their seasons. Best basketball players are 1. Jordan 2. Bird 3. Magic. Lebron is a very good player, but not on this level. These players understood the game from all aspects and had a inner drive second to none.

Yeah 46, it sure is “crazy” to use a worthless stat such as “number of championships won” as a measure of greatness. Probably shouldn’t keep score either….don’t want anyone to feel bad.

  99. Nolecat21

How many rings did MJ win without Pippen? He also had Rodman the perfect rebounder to give him even more attempts because he didn’t care to score. Bryant had Shaq and then Gasol. Magic had Kareem and Worthy. Bird had Parrish and Mchale. No one can win a ring by their self.
James can do things Jordan could only dream about doing because of his physical presence. He can guard any position on the court. James is more of a team player. He has a higher rebounding and assist avg than Jordan. He still avg’s 25+, but doesn’t need to chuck it up 30 times a game to do it.
Biggest difference is the defensive rule changes. Put LJ in MJ’s era with the same defense rules and he absolutely dominates. No one can guard him one on one. Illegal defense wasn’t removed until 2001. Now LJ gets double and tiple teamed. Some teams run the zone. None of this was allowed during the Jordan years.

What do Shaq, Kobe, MJ, Pippen, Rodman, 11 Championships all have in common? Hint, it isn’t Erik Spoelstra or Mike Brown.
