Pick your five: NBA lockout edition

A pretty legit starting five

When the former UK players return to campus this summer to start working out and playing pick up games, Lexington will have the closest thing to NBA level basketball in the country. CN2 needs to start seeking television rights for those games. That would be, without a doubt, the biggest offseason event in the history of Kentucky basketball, it’d be like the barnstorming tour on mega crack.

My question for you is, who would you choose as your ideal starting five if you could choose from all the current players, plus the Wildcats now in the NBA? I know that not every player has definitively said that they’ll return. A few guys like Nazr Mohammed and John Wall have explicitly expressed their desire to be reunited with Big Blue Nation, but not everyone has made the same commitment. However, for the sake of the game, let’s assume that every UK player in the league will be at the Craft Center this summer. Here’s who you have to choose from:

Current

– Darius Miller

– Eloy Vargas

– Jon Hood

– Terrence Jones

– Doron Lamb

– Stacey Poole

– Jared Polson

– Ryan Harrow

– Twany Beckham

– Anthony Davis

– Michael Gilchrist

– Marquis Teague

– Kyle Wiltjer

Former

– Nazr Mohammed

– Jamaal Magloire

– Tayshaun Prince

– Keith Bogans

– Kelenna Azubuike

– Chuck Hayes

– Rajon Rondo

– Jodie Meeks

– John Wall

– DeMarcus Cousins

– Patrick Patterson

– Eric Bledsoe

– Daniel Orton

– Enes Kanter

– Brandon Knight

– DeAndre Liggins

– Josh Harrellson

So who would you most like to see suit up together in what would surely be a legendary pickup game? If you’re feeling particularly daring (read bored) then choose two teams that you’d like to see square off. Personally, I think a game featuring Team 1 of John Wall, Jodie Meeks, Tayshaun Prince, Anthony Davis and Enes Kanter against Team 2 of Rajon Rondo, Brandon Knight, Michael Gilchrist, Patrick Patterson and DeMarcus Cousins would be a lot of fun to watch. It’s your call. Maybe we’ll even get to hear about some of these all-star match ups soon.

    I’d take Jorts 2010-2011 over Patterson 2009-2010.

But then it wouldn’t even be a comparison of who I’d take if using the Patterson from 2008-2009.

who do we know for sure will be in lexington. I would love to see Cals first year’s squad and Knight play against the current cats. Man that would be good for the young guys. I would love to see Teague, Lamb, Harrow, Miller, Gilchrist, Jones, Davis, and crew go up against Wall, Cousins, P Patt, Jorts, and company. Outside of playing summer ball against the Mavs nothing could better prepare the young guys for what they would see. I would love to see how Davis plays against Big Cuz. Patterson and Jones, going at it would be awesome. Wall v Teague, Knight v Lamb, Gilchrist v Bledsoe or whomever. Good lord my head might explode.

    10 player teams:

    Team A:
PG: John Wall, Eric Bledsoe, Marquis Teague, Twany Beckham
SG: Keleena Azubuike, Jodie Meeks, Jon hood
SF: DeAndre Liggins, Darius Miller, Michael Gilchrist
PF: Patrick Patterson, Terrance Jones, Kyle Wiltjer
    C: Demarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton
    Total: 15 players

    Team 1:
PG: Rajon Rondo, Brandon Knight, Ryan Harrow, Jarrod Polson
SG: Keith Bogans, Doron Lamb, Stacey Poole
    SF: Nazr Mohammed, Tayshaun Prince
PF: Jamaal Magloire, Eloy Vargas, Anthony Davis
C: Chuck Hayes, Enes Kanter, Josh Harrelson
    Total: 15

Notes: I tried to make these teams as player type/talent/total players balanced as possible and to include everyone. With the Exception of Jarrod Polson and Twany Beckham, everybodys name from left to right should, basically, be who was a pro first then for players who are currently here, who were here at UK first, (i.e. the left to right order has nothing to do with who will start/garner the most minutes). People who came together in the same class are irrelevantly ordered. A few, might not play their “pure/known” position, but to make way, I felt they could move up or down a slot depending if they had the skill. Really 15 players on each team is still a halfway reasonable roster assumming AT LEAST 3 people on each roster will not log many minutes. NOTE: The rosters are set up to be a 40-48 minute game, not explicitly a ‘looseleaf’ pickup game.

Please let somebody get the tv rights. Oome on KSR, I will be a camera guy or anything else you need to make this happen. You could even make it pay per view. It would be highly watched. You could syndicate it. This is a perfect storm. Heck The away team might be Rose, Evans, Lebron and some other allstars. With Cal’s open invitation, no telling who could show up. You people are idiots. Rondo is an all star and clearly better than Wall right now and you list him over Rondo. Rondo is the best PG on the list bar none, so leave Teague and knight out of it too.

Bogans is a starter in the league and is getting no love either. Lamb over him? Dumb. Here are your top 2 at each position. The young guys may be good, but if you think s kid just out of high school can hang with some of these NBA guys today you are sadly mistaken.
    PG Rondo-Wall
Sg Bogans Meeks. You can argue Kelenna over Meeks when healthy but kaz has been hurt.
Sf Prince vs ? There is a shortage here. I would argue a healthy kaz might be the best matchup but may also say Jones can give it a run. Gilchrist has a shot.
PF Patterson Hayes. Chuck gets it done. You guys will argue all over the map but in a team game Chuck gets it done.
C Boogie Nazr a lot of you will want Davis, but he is not big enough to compete with either as a center right now.

I would love to see last years final four team pair up against the previous years elite 8 team. You would think the latter was the most talented, but Knight’s team went further in tournament. So with the exception of one, here is what it would look like.

    Brandon Knight John Wall
    Deandre Liggins Eric Bledsoe
    Josh Harrelson Demarcus Cousins
    Enes Kanter Patrick Patterson

They are gonna need two courts. I would love to see them making their teams. First two to hit and then picking sides…
Say Knight and Meeks shoot first. Both make it and start picking.

If you are Brandon Knight and picking first you can choose between the big man in Cuz or a point guard in Wall OR Rondo or the Olympian Tashaun or the young buck Davis.

It would be fun to see who they pick when drafting their pick teams. This is assuming there is no Derick Rose, what if he shows? Probably solves the first pick problem.

With all this talent both current and former we need to throw out the idea of two teams and just go 3+ deep and do round robin style baby. Invite other schools to challenge our teams, they can come get some too. Id love to see a Kentucky squad play against the Mavs. See who really deserves a championship.
