Petrino isn’t a serious candidate at any of the four SEC schools

SEC blogger Chris Low over at ESPN.com doesn’t see Bobby Petrino finding a job in the Southeastern Conference next season.  Low is reporting that Petrino isn’t a candidate at any of the four SEC schools with coaching vacancies because the school presidents and chancellors simply aren’t going to let it happen.

It’s tough to criticize Mitch Barnhart for passing on Petrino when it appears everyone else is doing the same.  Kentucky fans just need to accept that it’s not happening.

The search continues…

I go to school in Atlanta with a lot of FSU alumni. They all LOVE Stoops and a wish he was head coach at FSU. I was on the fence between him and MacIntyre but after talking to all of them you can tell that Stoops has a huge future as a HC

As someone pointed out several weeks ago Petrino has not proven that he can build a program and win with his own players. The only thing we know foe sure is that he can leave a big mess behind. Just ask Kragthorpe.

#8 no coach that comes to UK has a huge future as a head coach. That’s what any coach who accepts the UK job probably realizes and figures they better take a head job…any head job…while they have a chance. UK is the graveyard of coaches.

9 – Are you serious? UL, Arkansas both had players mostly recruited by petrino. Arkansas was exactly where they are now when he got there. So how is it any more of a mess now than before? He had both teams in the national title hunt on a regular basis.

I cant blame anyone for not hiring this guy. If the pres and chancellors say no, no state run school is going to be able to hire a guy like Petrino. However, I think if Mitch were an elite salesman, ala Jurich, he could sell them on Petrino. Plenty of other names out there, its just that we know this one, so everyone is dissapointed.

The fact the others are passing on him is all the more reason to sign Petrino as our next coach. We have no proof Joker is a character guy, but what we do know is he was not a good coach. Anyone on this board has the passion for the UK program which was supposed to be such a positive about Joker. Who ever heard of a wide receiver as head coach? Petrino has proven he can score on anyone with average talent and he will be able to bring in higher ranked players then we currently are attracting. We would be exciting to watch for the first time since Woodson was playing quarterback. Prior to that the only reason to watch a game was when the psychotic Mumme was kicking onsides kicks to begin games and having non quarterbacks throwing passes on 4th and 15. The rest of these guys will be overwhelmed by the SEC. Game Over. I am completely aware that Petrino might not even say yes, but if we can hire Billy G to run the most important program in college basketball, then we can certainly take a chance on Petrino. We need to sell out games. Period. The Badminton team needs new uniforms.

What people seem to fail to realize is Petrino was able to do all of those things BEFORE the scandal at Arkansas became public. Obviously we have no idea the extent to which that hurt his reputation on the recruiting trail (because he hasn’t been coaching) but I can speak for myself when I say no son of mine would ever, under any circumstances, play football for him if given the opportunity. And I would imagine there are a lot of parents out there with similar mindsets.

Not to mention the trail of destruction he’s left in his wake at every stop he’s been on. Petrino is pure scum…I don’t care if we’d win 5 straight national titles. I don’t want him associated with my University in any capacity.

Let’s be clear…Bobby Petrino is not someone I’m inviting over for Thanksgiving, but he is one of the top 5 coaches in the country, IMHO. He wins everywhere. Anyone saying UofL players were in troubly during his tenure better do some research…the guy is a task master and the trouble started after he left because Kragthorpe was a dud and not a micro-manager like Pitino. If you can hire a basketball coach with 2 NCAA FF’s vacated (right or wrong, it happened), then you can hire a great coach under the only circumstances UK will ever get one….a fallen angel. If he leaves in 3 years, then hire your WAC coach or ACC Def Coordinator. The program will have gotten a huge boost. ..and, one more thing…if you are concerned about morality and ethics and still a fan of college sports, you are seriously ignoring the obvious state of college athletics.

It’s not all about just winning or selling our souls so you can get what you want; hiring a coach isn’t just about you. There is a saying that goes: If It’s Predictable It’s Preventable: Petrino has more than enough dirty laundry to make him predictable which means avoiding the inevitable scandal or problem that comes with Petrino is preventable. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and Petrino past behavior is F’d up.

I miss the old ksr that would go against the grain and be different. It’s sad that you all have become mouthpieces for the administration.

  49. So far I’ve mostly stayed out of the Petrino argument (I guess I’ve vacillated a lot), but Drew, get real. So because BETTER football programs than us won’t take a chance, we shouldn’t? Look, Matt himself keeps talking about how all the other SEC jobs that are open are better than UK. They can better AFFORD to overlook Bobby P than we can. Not necessarily advocating for him, but use logic no matter which side you’re on. There is no logic in this post.

The reaction time to passes by the corners was very inconsistent. They almost seemed surprised the QB would throw the ball to their guy. I was still hopeful at half-time but as soon as the Vols scored and built a ten point lead heads dropped and game over.

I’m sure that there is some “blackball” talk among SEC Athletic Directors and Presidents but when it’s all said and done you’ll see the Bobby Petrino will end up with an SEC head coaching job, probably at Auburn, because some of the AD’s may talk the talk but it’s all about winning and money, and Bobby Petrino can do both. He will have Auburn on a championship path and have their stadium filled and reap rewards from monster bowl games in a short period if time and UK will go back to being happy with 5 or 6 wins and an occasional Music City Bowl game now and then.

Matt Jones and KSR have been anti-petrino from the beginning. But KSR has flipp flopped on reason for passing on BP. Matt said numerous times on air that UK should not pursue BP because Auburn or Tenn would get him so why bother. Now that Auburn and Tenn are passing on bobby, KSR (Matt j) now says we should pass because other sec schools are passing. Matt, your argument has been inconsistent but at least you have been consistently opposed to UK not pursueing the best HC available.

Also, I am tired of this defeatist “we are uk football destined to at best win 8 games a year” mentality. It becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. If KSR openly says we are at best a mediocre football program, then we will always believe that is the best we can do. Guess what. That is what we will do. Uk football needs an attitude enema from top down. (including Matt jones and KSR)

Uk football can win sec and compete nationally. If you do not believe that, I say you need to change your total mindset. I am tired of the negativity and loser mentality.

Who do you life-long UK fans and residents of this State are to stop coming to games!!!!! Don’t you know Lee Todd’s mandate to me was to over-react to “the old boy network” to such an extent that I don’t even care what the long suffering fans think!!!!?”

And to all you people who say Petrino will leave in a couple of years what do you think a successful Butch Jones, Dykes or Macintyre will do if they are successful??

Now’s the time to hire Petrino. If no other school wants him then we can pay him a million a year to coach. What a bargain. And put it in the contract that if he leaves before the contract is up then he owes ALL the money that he has been paid back to UK. What’s the harm in this deal?

Thank goodness we can always count on our own stupidity…decades of still showing up to watch futile football attempts at winning in CWS have allowed a culture of losing and using us for money. Why stop now, right? Do you really think the stadium will ever be over half-full without some very serious surprises from a new coach not named Petrino? Stop for a second and ask yourself that, because it is absolutely the most important question in regards to this hire. If this douche AD swings and misses again – or even hires a coach that takes a few years to get going – how long will it be before the stands are halfway full again, and then who could we possibly get the next time? It’s an honest question and I’d like an answer from a Petrino hater

There were fans who were screaming to hire Cal after Tubby but there was also a portion of the fanbase who was saying no hes a cheater, low character, I will no longer be a fan if hes hired blah blah. UK is lucky that BCG turned out to be a train wreck and not a good coach or we’d be stuck in elite eight ville and Cal would be winning titles at Memphis. Some things never change.

Wow. If any of the other 3 schools would take Petrino, we wouldn’t have a shot. All three SEC schools are WAY more attractive than we are. Making these statements are not whining about Petrino. I guess I just don’t understand the logic of the other SEC schools aren’t interested, so that equates to Barnhart doing whats best for Kentucky Football by not hiring him either.
Petrino is only drooled after by some in our fan base because he wins. And we, UK, actually have a chance to hire a PROVEN winner. Granted, he’s a proven douche. But, I’d still take him over the mediocre hire coming our way. It’s not whining to speak what I feel is truth to power and dismiss the empty reasoning behind what is almost sure to be Mitch’s lame hire. I will pull for the Cats no matter what comes, despite Barnhart saying I’m not a REAL fan. I think that there are legitimate reasons for SOME schools not to hire him. We are not those schools. I am as aware as anyone where we are in the pecking order of the coaching carousel. That’s why it’s very difficult to sit back and watch this opportunity slip through UK’s fingers.
As I have stated it’s risk vs. reward. Petrino, IMO is worth the risk. UK can afford to gamble because we have nothing to lose. Could things be any worse? We haven’t been this bad since probation.
I love reading and listening to Matt and Drew, but please stop trying to convince fans that Barnhart knows best or Pro-Petrino people are wrong-headed and crazy. I am not either of those things. I am perfectly reasonable. He is the best avail. coach and we (miracle of miracles) can actually get him. Yes, he has baggage. Barnhart isn’t going to take the chance (shocker). WE GET IT. The major flaw in this logic Franklin is…

Kentucky can’t do as the other bigger named Football Universities do.

We can’t hire a Mark Saban or a Les Miles.

Kentucky has to take more risk than bigger programs. To suggest otherwise as proof we made the right decision is flawed in it’s conception.

By Barnhart going after no names with no resumes proves this to be factual. It’s just that Barnhart is trading risk, public perception risk for “little proof you can do the job” risk.

It’s a Public Relations move, not an Athletic Director interested in taking the risk that people make mistakes (Bill Clinton, Rick Pitino) and can be forgiven for them.

We have an AD afraid to tie his name to the best coach because he’s afraid no one else will hire “him” down the road at a bigger University if he does. So in essence, Kentucky fans get to suffer at the cost of Mitch Barnhart protecting his resume for a higher job at a higher place.

    – Mitch isn’t the AD for Alabama, where they can take less risk. It’s not tough to criticize. All the other open jobs in the SEC are higher profile programs. They can take less risk.

They won’t have a candidate list that looks like ours. You know this to be true. They simply don’t have to take the same risk. Period. Point Blank.

burge2, The worst thing about all of this, is this. With Petrino people are putting their personal feelings ahead of what would be good for the program. I HATED Petrino with a passion whil he was at Louisville and Arkansas. He’s a dick and everyone knows it. He ran up the score and was an all around ass. That being said, I KNOW he would have a better chance of winning here then anyone else out there that will come here. For that reason, I would put aside my hatred. I’d much rather dole out the ass beating then receive them. But much of this fan base define insanity….doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same results. If Petrino had no baggage would he even consider this shit hole of a job (that has been made that way by lack of university support). Hell no he wouldn’t. That alone should tell everyone that he IS THE RIGHT HIRE. No one else in the SEC wants him? Fine, hire him UK and become relevant. Or, don’t hire him like the football snops we are and maintain the status quo. After all we get our SEC paycheck at season’s end regardless. The Women’s Volleyball team needs new socks.

    Informal Fallacy #2:

Hasty Generalization is an informal fallacy of faulty generalization by reaching an inductive generalization based on insufficient evidence– essentially making a hasty conclusion without considering all of the variables.

E.g., “UK is the same as the other schools in the SEC”

As I stated in post #134 – Being the program with a lower winning tradition, no titles, fewer tangibles to offer head coaching candidate we will naturally have a smaller list of candidates to chose from. If we are interested in being competitive we must take more risk than an Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, since they have a higher pedigree of candidates to select from (Supply & Demand).

To be entertaining the idea of mid-major coaches as candidates proves this point. It’s just that Barnhart is trading “risk”, public perception risk for “little proof you can do the job” risk.

We’ve got an Athletic Director who has worn out his welcome. He no longer makes decisions for the University, and considering where the University is in regards to the other programs, this is about him.

That’s the first sign that you replace someone in their job. When they are more important than the job they must do.

If Mitch Barnhart can’t make the decision to hire Petrino, then he should resign.

Get out of the way for what’s best for the University.

If he doesn’t, then he isn’t a man of integrity. He wants it both ways.

I don’t believe any of this anti Petrino BS. The bottom line is obviously he will not be at Arkansas and Auburn and Petrino have past issues so that is doubtful as well. So that leaves the two SEC job openings at Tennessee and Kentucky. Tennessee is very serious about winning in football but may have some cold feet because of what Kiffin died and the Dooley disaster. But I would not be a bit surprised for Tennessee to bring Petrino in and we will be kicking ourselves for the next 10 years!

Don’t be an idiot Barnhart, swallow your pride and make a splash and hire the best.

#139. Bubba Hotep, the only thing Louisville and Arkansas fans hate about Bobby Petrino is not having him as their coach anymore.
