Pete Thamel says nice things about Cal

Sports Illustrated‘s Ted Keith, Amanda Younger, Maggie Gray, and Pete Thamel had a roundtable discussion about whether or not Cal received too much criticism last year and whether or not his success is sustainable. Actually, aside from some uncomfortable squirming around the 30 second mark, Thamel was incredibly complimentary of Cal. Almost more complimentary than some of the other writers. Here are a few of his comments:

“I give Calipari a ton of credit because he coached a bunch of egos and he got them together and they played as selfless and as well defensively as any team in the country last year. And to squeeze out all the excess stuff and block all the excess stuff outside and lock them in like they did was an unbelievable coaching job. It’s going to be really hard to do again.”

“I think one of the things that John has done well, is when coaches get talented guys like that on campus, they want to keep them, and they want to guard them here. What John has done and done very well he’s said ‘You’re good enough, go. I want you to go. I am here to send you to the NBA.’ He started doing it with Dajuan Wagner at Memphis, and he continued with Derrick Rose, and it’s continued on. He has been the first guy to be like ‘Hey, you’re good to go, go. I don’t want to take money out of your pocket.’

Is Pete turning over a new leaf or is this smoke and mirrors? See it to believe it:

I’m only saying nice things because my old scool allows players to abuse drugs. Also, one of coaches (Fine) loved threesomes with ex-players.

  14. How does Pete know...
    12:23 pm November 6, 2012 Permalink

…How does Thamel know just how many “egos” were on this team? I think the whole damn point is that we have NO egos and that’s the magic of Cal…to take kids and have them check them at the door….that’s more accurate.

Actually, I take issue with his comments – especially the part about a “bunch of egos” on last year’s team, as if Cal did something magical getting a bunch of a-holes to play at a team. MKG and Davis are the last two I would point to in college basketball last year who I would consider having “big egos” – even though they had every right to. Perhaps Jones and maybe Teague, but to suggest last year was a group of egos who Cal got to play as a unit is a backhanded compliment, one that cuts at our players.
