Pelphrey’s Seat Heats Up
Despite beating Kentucky, locking up a solid recruiting class, and looking like Richie Cunningham, it looks like John Pelphrey’s days as Head Coach in Charge at Arkasnsas may be limited. Similar to some of the controversy surrounding Tubby in his final years, a razorback fan took out an ad in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that torched the red head from KY.
The ad read:
ATTENTION ARKANSAS BASKETBALL FANS
For all of you who care about the future of Arkansas Razorback Basketball, we urge you to write your concerns and submit them as soon as possible. Please send these letters to the Governor, members of the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, President, Chancellor, and Athletic Director whose names and addresses are listed below. Let’s make this effort one of respect for all parties concerned.
There is quite a bit of evidence that Razorback fans are disturbed by what they see in the present outlook of Arkansas Basketball. This voicing of concerns is not intended to become a name calling contest or an attack upon anyone personally. It is only intended to be a ground-swell expression of bewildered and frustrated basketball supporters, many of whom know a great deal about the way the game should be played. We would like to bring this to the attention of the University’s decision-makers on the future of Arkansas basketball before too much time passes. This expression of your views is very important. Please be a part of it.

Okay, maybe that’s a little shy of ‘torching’ Pelphrey, but whenever a fan takes out an ad in a paper to urge others to get you fired, it’s not a good sign. To be fair, after a strong start in Arkansas things have rapidly declined for the former Wildcat. They are currently 7-8 in the SEC and likely going to miss out on a tourney berth, save for a run in the SEC tournament. But hey, with wins against Kentucky and Vanderbilt this year, he’d probably be getting an extension and a statue erected if he were coaching for Indiana so that’s something.

Maybe Pelphrey can join Coach Cals Staff 🙂 . That would be the Bees Knees. Also to everyone who gripes about Coach Cal, Take a look at what the Tubster is doing up North in Gopherland.

I don’t know why he hasn’t had a better yr with Powell, Clark and co. I think they’ll give him one more yr. I hope he turns it around. Being such a Ricky P-oriented coach, no way he’d ever join Cal’s staff though.
As someone who is stuck in Arkansas and a huge Wildcat fan I can not tell you how heartbreaking that loss was. I guess I need to get over it though… As an observer The hogs will never have a successful basketball team until they learn to back their coach. Hog fans are very temperamental. They support the team ONLY if they win. I have nothin but love for Pelphrey and wish the best. I’m just sorry that he has to deal with these horrible fans.

Arkansas has a number six in the nation class coming in next year and just beat Kentucky for the first time ever under Pelphrey and a solid win over Vandy on the road.

He has a really good recruiting class coming in next year. They should at should at least give him next year to see if there are improvements.
If the ad was taken out by the rank and file our man stays. If the ad was taken out by a certain family or 2 in the state then he is toast. fwiw, arkansas has had a better than average basketball team since the 40’s. Not saying elite like UK, KU, IU, or UNC but better than most.
It’s Arkansas for god’s sake.

i listen to uk radio every game….I hope we run vs Tn its the only time we look really good….Pel and Ford r good coaches…Ark was usually good with Sutton and Richardson
It’s Arkansas. What are they expecting?
The IU reference should have noted the similarities between Ar and Ind. both schools mistakenly thought they had a program when they really just happened to have a coach in his best era.
So if Pel does leave or get dismissed/fired, where would he go? Does he sit out a year or two and hope for another head coaching job, go announce for ESPN like other fired SEC coaches, or does he go to be an assistant somewhere, likely with one of his mentors/friends? Obviously you need a staff member to move on for that kind of thing, but the obvious places for him to try to rebuild his resume would be Florida, Alabama, Louisville or UK. (The first two being his former boss and co-worker as well as friends, the third his old coach, and UK of course his alma mater.)
8. You’re discription of Arkansas fans only supporting the coach when they are winning sounds like a lot of Kentucky fans.

Do these Arkansas fans not realize that like 10 coaches turned down this job before Pelfrey accepted? Arkansas is a decent gig, but not a destination job.

Arkansas will never have a basketball team as long as they refuse to support their coach. A FAN means through thick and thin. No coach will consider this desolate program with their track record of hire and fire without the opportunity to build a program. Nolan was an awesome coach and Frank Broyles ran him off.
What will Arkansas do if they fire Pelphrey and next year’s recruits want a release from their LOIs? Oh yeah, fire the next coach when he takes too long to build up the program.
