Patterson’s Tweet and Monday Show Thread!

Last night, Matt tweeted six former UK basketball players whose names should be in the rafters at Rupp Arena. He said Delk, Pratt, Prince, Bogans, Wall, and Davis need to have their jerseys retired.

Patrick Patterson saw the tweet and responded.

Matt will talk about it on today’s show.

truth. i’d hate to think of what would have happened without PPat. we’d have still had Jodie but… PPat is one of my favorite to ever put on the blue & white.

I’d put Patterson over at least Davis… Maybe more of those.

Davis is a great player, but the rafters are for greatness at UK. Not (projected) lifetime achievement awards. If Davis stayed 3 years and graduated, as P-Pat did, then no question. I don’t think 1 year is long enough.

Like your list Matt but gotta disagree with you about Wall. Yes he was a significant recruit, won a national award and I loved having “the guy” that everyone was buzzing about which never happened here before but I’m not sure about JW getting his jersey hung. Davis, Prince, Bogans, Delk and Pratt yes, Wall no for me.

I agree with Matts response to PPatt too, the program would have collapsed had he not come. Thus, to me Patterson>Wall in terms of importance.

Also, the NYT article (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/09/sports/ncaabasketball/begrudging-the-kentucky-wildcats-success-and-opportunities.html?_r=3) is right. And the responses Matt has received saying that race would never be a reason (ironically enough one is from a WVU beat writer, I am sure there are no racists there…) are rather disturbing. Even Tom Izzo is quoted in the article as agreeing that race is playing a huge factor in these kids seeking success.

no way John Wall is hung in the rafters. Davis, i can handle cuz of all the hardware he won…including a ring…. but Wall is a definite no for me. Davis,Miller and Patterson go before Wall.

Wall played one year and then choked in the Elite 8. Wall was about Wall. UK was just a logo he wore.Wall did no play for the fans, Cal or to win. He played for himself and couldn’t wait to make his millions in the NBA. I respect his talent. His jersey does deserve to be hanging.

Patterson had class. He actually attended classes and earned a degree. His parents were classy, which Patrick clearly learned from. Patterson came to UK before Cal. He took a smaller role once Cal took over and played his heart out.

UK was more than a Jersey Patterson wore. He was good to the fans and actually cared about the program. I doubt Wall even knows what city UK is located in.

I completely disagree with Anthony Davis or John Wall having their jerseys hung in the rafters. Don’t get me wrong, these are two of my favorite players in UK history. However, the standard for this honor is graduating from UK which Wall nor Davis has done; once Mashburn did this we hung his jersey. I think Patrick Patterson’s jersey definitely should be hung because he graduated and was key in rebuilding us to elite status once again. I actually think one can make an arguement for Darius Miller as well. Compare his career stats with Feldhouse or Farmer and I guarantee that Miller’s is more impressive over four years…

#3, I’m with you there. Wall was big and was the “it guy,” like you said. But I always felt that he wasn’t even the most important player on the floor for the Cats in 2010 (Cousins presence/absence on the court seemed to affect games more). I love Wall, but for a one-and-done guy to get his name in the rafters, he better have won a ton of national awards and led us to a title (a la Davis). Wall didn’t, so I think he comes up a bit short.

Honestly, I love Patrick Patterson, and he may well deserve having his jersey retired, but the program would not be significantly different without him. His first two years, regardless of his performance, were a waste with Billy Gillispie. No one one argue those two years had any importance in the big picture, except to pave the way for John calipari. The Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, Patterson team would have still been really good without Patterson. Not as good as it was, but still really good. Program would have been moving in the right direction. We might have lost in the sweet 16 instead of Elite 8.

Again, I like the idea of retiring PPats jersey over Wall, but the logic that he did wonders for the program doesn’t really stand. He kept us from being completely awful for two years, and instead we were mediocre.

I also find it surprising that PPat would tweet this about himself, as a side note. I think he’s above such a reaction.

6 there is a way of making your point without sounding like a d-bag. No need to diss Wall the way you did. The whole team choked in the Elite 8. He did carry us on his back most of the season so I can see where you would blame him for not carrying the whole team that day, but without Wall we wouldn’t have been in the Elite 8. I agree we don’t need to hang his banner, but no need to disrespect Wall.

    2) No one is diminishing the importance Patterson had for the program and that he graduated, but you’re blind if you think he accomplished more as a UK player.

Davis’s hardware alone, not to mention the records he broke, will make him a bigger name historically at UK. Davis is the reason we won the title this year, which unfortunately Pat didn’t do in his third year. You can’t ignore that Davis is our FIRST PoY.

Let’s give some of these names some more time and look at them again in a few year and see where they stand. At UK we should expect that the jersey’s in the rafters be extraordinarily special. I would only retire Delk and Davis, honestly. I think it takes the right mixture of team success and individual play to get your jersey retired, and Davis and Delk are the only two with the right mixture in my opinion.

Tayshaun Prince had a great individual career but in his 4 years we went 97-39 and never advanced past the Elite Eight.

Keith Bogans had a great individual career and experienced more team success, but he only played on 1 great team, and he also never made it past the Elite Eight.

Mike Pratt can’t be included based solely off his playing career. He’s outside the top 20 all time in scoring and rebounding and never made it past the Elite Eight.

John Wall had a fantastic season here, was a consenus first team all-american, and did a huge amount for our brand, but he still was only here one season and he never made it past the Elite Eight.

Patrick Patterson has a legitimate case, in my opinion. He came to Kentucky under Gillispie instead of Duke or Florida, who were both much more attractive at the time. He graduated in 3 years and remains extremely loyal to the program. The team success isn’t there, but I think a case can be made that his contributions to this program (coupled with his 3 year graduation) is enough to make up for that.

Anthony Davis and Tony Delk both deserve to be up there, without a doubt. 1st team all-americans who win championships are automatic.

The problem with the jersey in rafters debate is where do you draw the line. The no-brainers (Delk and Pratt) clearly need to be up there. After that its all judgement. Do you include a guy like PPat over say Chuck Hayes? Bogans over Prince? You could go down the line with the toss up guys and find people who argue on either side. Either hang the no-brainers and only the no-brainers, or open it up and hang them all like UNC does.

    66) Matts argument for Wall was he was the major recruit that brought UK back to his prime. He later told PPatt after he asked what would UK have done if he hadnt came that the program would have collapsed. NO ONE would have wanted to come to UK with a squad sans PPatt originally, because that lineup was even more atrocious. People were still trying to get PPatt to declare for draft before Cal ever came, but he didn’t. His veteran presence was essential on Cals first team to help everyone as well. PPat makes a excellent point, he was the only reason the CATS kept their heads above water during his 1st two years and was very important in the run to the Elite Eight when he stayed. Also was at least for me the reason I listen to KSR radio, the first time when you guys were at the Huntington gym with a telephone to hear PPat commit to the CATS. I think the entire tournament not having one buzzer-beater turned up its’ randomness exponentially. Last year WE had 2 buzzer-beaters ourdelves, and there were about 3-4 daily in the early rounds. With such randomness, it just shows how much better we actually were. Thanks

In reference to Teague going this year or next year in the draft; next year’s draft will be even weaker for PG’s. He could legit be a lottery pick next year, that being said I want what’s best for him and have no blame at all if he goes this year. Have to factor in the “one in hand vs 2 in the bush”… injuries and all kind of crazy stuff can happen in a year. Going next year has more upside but it also has a much bigger downside because of chance of injury or 2 PG’s that could rise above him and he could be in the same place as this year.

124 good point about Miller’s teammates. However, even most of the better players (Cousins, Meeks, PPat, Bledsoe, Knight, Lamb, etc.) he played with Matt does not believe should have their jerseys retired either. I wouldn’t say there is anything “ridiculous” about Matt’s logic here.

From the time Mashburn was here, there have been alot of Darius Miller’s in the program. Solid four year contributors that gave their all. He happened to play with a lot of great players. Hayes, Crawford, Fitch, Daniels, Ramel, etc. would have also been in this same conversation had any of them played with the last 3 years’ teams. They probably wouldnt have been in the top 3 on any of those teams either…

It seems the level of enjoying the ncaa tourney is inversely proportional to how well you are expected to do. The lower the expectation the more the fun. Look at UK last year, VCU’s run last year, even UL’s this year. Low expectations made each win more memorable. UK, UNC and Syracuse this year was all do or die.

Analogy, sitting down at a blackjack table and going on a run with $100.00 of mad money and turning it into $2,000 verses sitting down at the same table with your last $100 knowing you have to turn it into $2,000 to make a house or bookie payment.

I would not be surprised if we went to Big Blue Madness next year and Richie’s jersey was no longer hanging in the rafters at Rupp and for sale on eBay. He may even swipe a few of the other jerseys to help off-set his growing debt problems. Poor #StickyFingersRichie…his life is in a complete downward spiral.

UNC “honors” many jerseys and that requires a lower criteria such as 1st Team AA or NPOY. Much higher standard at UNC for getting a “jersey” retired.

The only guy on the list that should 100% have his jersey retired is Tony Delk. Great player. 4 year guy. Won a national championship. No debate on Delk. Anthony Davis would be next b/c he won a nat’l title and won every national award known to mankind. I don’t have an opinion on Mike Pratt, as he was before my time. The rest of these guys were very good players, but they didn’t win a championship or totally dominate college basketball like Davis.

I think, considering the success this program could have potentially without so many 4 year players, UK should seriously look into some sort of Ring of Honor, etc., in addition to an actual jersey retirement. Then you could keep strict standards on jersey retirement while honoring though that have benefited the program in the way Wall and Davis have. In the NEW RUPP ARENA you could build this into the plan.

    11:33 am April 9, 2012 Permalink

People suggesting Patterson and Miller need to be retired in Rupp….wait for it….are loyal to UK only. Think about it from another perspective. Look at the numbers, the achievements on and off the court, championships, etc etc. If UK retires all ‘great’ players we would have a few jerseys retired. If UK retired all the ‘good’ players, then there would only be about 20 numbers left for our next players to wear.

Patterson caught the hearts of UK fans because for most of his time (during Gillespie) he was the big loveable guy that was good but not great. The fact he was good and not great meant fans liked him more when struggled and turned it into success. The fact Calipari came and saved his draftablility speaks wonders for how much such loyal fans are thinking he should be retired at Rupp. If Gillipsie was still there, Patterson may not have gotten drafted at all despite his UK numbers. Calipari really did Patterson a solid.

I love Davis, Wall, Cousins, etc but I’m much more inclined to put up Darius Millers jersey and P-Pats jersey before Wall, Davis. Those guys will be always be mentioned as legends at UK but I’m thinking at least a 3 year stint should be required to have the jersey retired. It’s going to be so different when we talk about who the new top 10’s are and favorite player lists etc because every year we’re bringing in top talent to play in the NBA. I think it just depends on your age. I do think Bogans, Prince,Delk should be up there as well.

Next to Delk, the player that is most worthy of having his jersey in the rafters is not on your list: Wayne Turner. Turner was a key back-up on the 1996 national championship squad; he ran the point on the 1997 runner-up squad; and he helped lead UK to the National Title in 1998 (under a different coach). Turner was not flamboyant, but he argubably was one of the best point guard ever to play at UK . His all-around game was tremendous. He was unbelievable on defense, and he would break down man-to-man defenses with ease. He rarely turned the ball over, and often made clutch plays. And he destroyed Steve Wojechowski and Duke to get us revenge in the 1998 NCAA tourney. He also was a 4 year guy.

Not a popular thought, but putting the 92 group up there lowered the standards and screwed up the legitimacy of retired numbers. That was a kneejerk reaction to a great season. That is one of the reasons it is so hard to define someone who should have their number in the rafters now.

Main article: Honored North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball players
    Retired basketball jerseys
    Number Player Year
    NC Jack Cobb 1926
    20 George Glamack 1941
    10 Lennie Rosenbluth 1957
    12 Phil Ford 1978
    52 James Worthy 1983
    23 Michael Jordan 1984
    33 Antawn Jamison 1998
    50 Tyler Hansbrough 2009

The Jerseys in the raftersForty-seven former North Carolina men’s basketball players are honored in the Smith Center with banners representing their numbers hung from the rafters. Of the 47 honored jerseys, eight are retired.

To have his jersey honored, a player must have met one of the following criteria[58]:

MVP of a National Championship-winning team
Member of a gold medal-winning Olympic team
    First- or second-team All-America
    ACC Player of the Year
    NCAA Tournament MOP
To have his jersey retired, a player must win one of the following six widely recognized player of the year awards[59]:

Associated Press Player of the Year
Oscar Robertson Trophy, formerly known as the United States Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year
National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year
Sporting News Player of the Year
    John R. Wooden Award
Naismith College Player of the Year
Eight players (including Jack Cobb, whose jersey did not have a number) have had their jerseys retired. Tyler Hansbrough’s number 50 is the eighth jersey to be retired, after he won all six major player of the year awards during the 2007—08 season.[60]

Ppat is right there on the same level with chuck he graduated in 3 years i mean really come on… could have jumped after his freshman year in the first round…..rafters are for 1.CHARACTER…. 2.impact on the program…. 3.accomplishments
i for one will remember chuck hayes as one of the top 5 most beloved and revered players to ever wear the blue and white…… sure there have been alot of better players to play for the cats but none that truly embodied what we fans hope and pray for in a player… he totally captured the spirit of the program in his play and determination…. patterson in almost the same way ..the only knock is he didn’t stay all 4 years ….why would he …he already graduated …. he debunked the entire thought and stigma that you have to stay 4 years

    – Delk is one of the best EVER to play at UK, and is more responsible than any player for #6.
-As far as coaches, Tubby won an NC, but is responsible for the 10 year downward spiral of our program
