Patrick Towles only needed one half

Over the weekend, Highlands played Dixie Heights in the battle of two of the nation’s top quarterbacks. Highlands’ Patrick Towles and Dixie Heights’ Zeke Pike went head-to-head on the gridiron for bragging rights in the state. Pike, an Auburn commit, is a Top-5 quarterback in 2012, according to both and Rivals. Towles, a UK commit, is ranked No. 41 and No. 23 on those sites. I think it’s time to reevaluate the rankings.

It only took one half for the future Wildcat to show who’s the best prospect in the state. Patrick Towles threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns…in the first half. Towles added 34 more passing yards and two rushing scores in the second half, leading Highlands to a 63-13 over Dixie Heights. He sat the bench for most of the final two quarters. Pike completed 13-of-25 passes for 109 yards and two interceptions in the loss.

The future looks bright for Kentucky at the quarterback position. Get excited about this one, folks.

Towles has so much more talent around him compared to Pike, its ridiculous. Pike’s main weapon (Bruns) did not play. That said, after backing Pike last year, I now see Towles as the better prospect. Throws a very good deep ball. Both concern me with foot speed in & out of the pocket on the SEC level.

If this kid is as good as advertised, then what are the chances of a better school coming and late in the recruiting game? I’m saying there’s a 75% chance this kid decommits from UK and commits elsewhere.

The northern Kentucky boys are so much better at football than the rest of the state because of their proximity to the Bengals. The greatness that is the orange jungle cats emanates from Cincy and drifts across the river.

Patrick Towles vs Louisville Trinty made me think his ranking was generous. He was terrible vs decent Trinty defense.

Saw both at various camps this summer-would rather have Towles-Pike will be TE in college-dad worked system for ranking-kid is big and strong, but not SEC QB (IMO)-Towles is also a personable kid-it’ll be fun to see how they both develop-Pike will now enjoy the luxury of talent at AU-Good luck to both!

Only intelligent people should post on this site. Both kids have talent and physical tools. Pike however lacks the attitude and personality to be successful on any level. Yes, Highlands has a program that few schools can match, but Towels still executes the game plan and finds success because of his disposition. The Cats are getting the better of the two QB prospects. I agree with bigkathead in that Pike will play TE at the next level because Auburn will not only recruit over top of Pike but will realize his talents are better served outside of the pocket.

9.) Zeke’s Dad is Mark Pike, he owns Better Bodies and Silverlake in Fort Mitchell. The guy had nothing to do with Zeke’s national ranking; nice try guy. Zeke will play QB because he will be all Auburn has, and he comes from NFL stock. Mark played on all of the Buffalo Bills unfortunate Super Bowl runs. That being said, I am more impressed with Towles but watch out for Notre Dame trying to get him to decommit.

I can guarantee that Pike has nothing to work with at Dixie Heights. I graduated from Dixie Heights, and can tell you that they do not get the best kids in the area, compared to Highlands. Highlands routinely routes Dixie, with Dixie having won once in the last 10 years. Highlands will win state against this year, whereas Dixie will suffer a likely first round playoff loss.

Pike’s recruiting stock is plummeting. Even Scout has removed his fifth star, and they were all over the kid at the end of the spring. He’s now fallen out of the Rivals’ top 100, and that trend will continue as people realize he’s not suited to be a quarterback at the next level and is just a big body. I think he’d make a hell of a linebacker, but not for an SEC caliber school.

I’ve seen both play numerous times and Towles is much better period. Pike’s ranking is inflated because of his size and arm, but you only need to watch a few games to know he is not going to be a college QB in the SEC. I also agree with whoever said to watch for ND sweeping in to try to get him. I’m pretty worried about that, but ultimately I think he sticks to his commitment.

Towles will find more success than Pike at the collegiate level playing the QB position. If Auburn is hanging their hats on Zeke Pike being the next Cam Newton, then Gene Cheesed*ck is already fired. Trinity has nothing to do with Highlands or Dixie. Everyone knows they have the best football program in the state. When you compare any team with the Shamrocks, you are comparing apples to oranges. ND very well could try and slide into Ft Thomas and lure Towles to South Bend. But why would he want to play there? So BK can cuss him out live on national television? People gain some perspective, while both kids are talented, no one really can predict how either one of these kids will play out or where they will officially sign. I believe the football negative nancy’s have turned on committed recruits as well now!!!

Jim, don’t be a naive hilljack just because you’re Baptist. Let us not forget that USF is probably poised to make a run in the Big East. Not impressive exactly, but never underestimate Notre Dame, especially when it comes to recruiting. They play a lot of Big 10 schools and will easily get a bowl bid. UK has lost a good amount of recruits to those golden domers.

Trinity better than Highlands? Oh, please. BTW, scrimmages don’t count when measuring the success of a football program. If pre-season games meant something, the Bengals would have more Super Bowl rings than the Patriots, who consistently do poorly in pre-season. Even when I was in high school 20 plus years ago, we never heard the end of this downstate team was better than Highlands, blah, blah, blah. And then Highlands kick their tails in real games. I am confident that Highlands would glady play Trinity in a real game, anywhere, anytime. Finally, one further point. Highlands, as a public school, does not have the ability to recruit players like the Catholic schools do (and they DO recruit, quietly).

This game was replayed down here in Georgia on one of my extra sport package channels. I tried to watch it but seriously looked like the game was being played slow motion. Both QB’s were good but the overall teams were awful compared to what I’m use to.

Ok here is a question, if you were to pick blind, would you rather have the pick from 1400 boys at a private school or 400 boys at a public school?

To win the state championship, would you rather have the least amount of boys to pick from in your division, or have 1 of the 2 most boys to pick from?

I encourage any of you to watch that game and think Towles sucks. Why is everyone so negative anyway?

One more thing, to the person that did post # 4, do you know anything about this kid? Obviously not… Living in Fort Thomas you hear about how he loves UK.

I can’t believe people get so down on someone so much and he has done just about everything right so far.

  40. Towles is Better
    6:32 pm September 6, 2011 Permalink

Pike’s ranking is also inflated because he never played QB until his junior year so scouts think he has a higher ceiling to improve. But I personally think it has more to do with the fact that his dad played in the NFL and set him up for workouts and camps that he normally wouldnt have been invited to. I’ve seen both play a lot, and Towles is better hands down in an actual football game. From what I have seen of Pike, he might be the most overrated player in the history of high school sports. It’s beyond me of why he’s rated so high. His own coach at Dixie was quoted in the paper as saying that he doesn’t understand it either. Maybe Pike looks better in a combine or workout, but Towles is a better QUARTERBACK and FOOTBALL PLAYER. I’m VERY worried if I’m Auburn and counting on a quarterback that has a career 6-8 record in HIGH SCHOOL as a starting QB. How do they expect him to win games in the SEC if he can’t win in HIGH SCHOOL? Yes, Towles has better players around him at Highlands and it’s not fair to just look at head to head competition, but Pike and Dixie can’t even beat mediocre teams and teams that they SHOULD beat. They’re struggling against everyone. They’re winless this season. Granted Pike didn’t play the first week because he was suspended, and that’s a completely different issue. I’d take Towles over Pike any day of the week.

On the issue of Highlands/Trinity. Yes, it was a scrimmage game. Highlands has proven over and over again over the years that they can beat anyone. They’ve beaten the best teams from Louisville AND Cincinnati, most recently Cincy St. X last year. I’m not a Highlands supporter, but I live in NKY and know better. They are more often than not the best team in the state regardless of classification. They appear in the USA Today national top 25 poll pretty regularly. Most of the state is pretty ignorant (as it appears) if they think that Trinity/St. X are much better than Highlands. They might be better on a given year, but it would be a good game as it always has been between Highlands and the big Louisville/Cincy schools.
