Patrick Towles interview and other notes

This afternoon I caught up with Patrick Towles (2012-QB) who has already given his verbal pledge to Joker Phillips.  Recently Patrick was invited to attend the Elite 11 camp (July 18th-22nd) in Los Angeles, CA.  Patrick informed me his mother, brother and sister were making the trip with him.  Patrick will be one of 25 quarterbacks competing for a spot in the actual Elite 11 competition. This is a huge honor for Patrick and great publicity for the football program.

Basically the recruiting process for Patrick has slowed down since his commitment to UK. “I’m still getting a few letters. During my junior season recruiting was slow, but after the state championship game it picked up and was enjoyable,” he said.

I asked Patrick about UK and why he picked the Cats and he said, “I’ve always been a huge UK guy. They run a pro-style offense. I love Coach Phillips’ mentality that winning is not an option. Also, Coach Sanders won a national championship with Tee Martin and coached Peyton Manning.”

Patrick talks to the staff about once a week or so.  He mainly speaks with Chuck Smith who was his primary recruiter.  Patrick informed me he is working hard to get better everyday. “Everything can get better. My number one goal is footwork. Get my feet set quicker, get rid of the ball quicker and find receivers faster.”  Patrick may attend a one day camp in Lexington before the summer is up, but nothing is set in stone.

Patrick was also excited his teammate, Austin Sheehan, will be joining him at UK.  The Cats offered Sheehan a preferred walk-on spot and he accepted.  He mentioned Austin’s family purchased UK season tickets a couple of years ago and they went to a lot of games together. Patrick said his goal was to go 15-0, win a State Championship and a National Championship.

Jared Lorenzen has made a huge impact working with Patrick.  “It’s been awesome. He won a Super Bowl, played at UK and won a State Championship.  He has helped me a lot. We watch so much film together,” he said.

Currently Patrick is 6’6″ and 230lbs. He hasn’t been timed running the forty-yard dash in quite some time, but ran a 4.72 last time he was timed.  Patrick was a little under-the-radar initially, but has blown up since his Elite 11 Regional Camp performance.  If he has a huge performance in Los Angeles, he could end up being the highest rated recruit in the 2012 class for UK.

On another note, Josh Forrest (2011-ATH), who signed with UK in February will be reporting soon.  Josh has been on the fence with his test scores, but has now qualified.

Jordan Watson (2012-OL) from Georgia visited UK yesterday. He holds several BCS offers and was teammates with Josh Clemons.

Blake Fromang (2012-OL) from Florida is visiting UK today.  He is another big time offensive line prospect with several BCS offers.

Tyler Drake (2012-LB) from Florida will visit UK on Monday.  He plays at St. Thomas Aquinas, which is a school that produces a ton of talent.  UK recently offered Drake’s teammate, Cole Champion (2012-S) a scholarship too.

Remember the following names as these guys could pull the trigger sooner than later: Mike Hilton (RB), Joe Manley (OL), Jake Meador (OL), Darone Bailey (OL), JD Harmon (WR), MeKale McKay (WR), Julian Leslie (DE), Daniel Ross (DE), Langston Newton (DE), Devontre Parnell (CB), Jadarius West (CB) and Chris Bivins (CB)

“I love Coach Phillips’ mentality that winning is not an option.” Typo or not this encapsulates everything anyone could ever need to know about UK football.

“I love Coach Phillips’ mentality that winning is not an option.” I wondered about that too. Must mean winning is mandatory, not an option, or something to that extent.

What an incredibly unfortunate typo with the winning is not an option thing. Just really unfortunate.

I don’t think it’s a typo. I think Phillips is just dumb enough to say “winning” instead of “losing”.

What it means is what it says: “Winning is not an option”. It means that you go out and win, there is no other option than to win.
