Patrick Towles grew up around criticism, should be ready to deal with it at UK.
We linked it earlier today, but the video of Patrick Towles and his grandfather, Hall of Fame pitcher and retired Senator Jim Bunning, is deserving of its own post.
Around the 1:22 mark, Patrick talks about what it was like growing up and hearing so much criticism from the media of his grandfather in his political career. Bunning remarks that the public criticisms he faced as a politician has toughened up his grandson and will serve him well in his career at Kentucky. Patrick saw at a young age that his grandfather didn’t worry about what others thought of him, and hopefully he takes that philosophy and instills it into a Kentucky football team that is currently surrounded by almost nothing but negativity.
Towles is expected to compete for the starting quarterback position this fall, but will likely play behind returning sophomore Max Smith, at least early in the season. At UK, it seems like the backup quarterback is the most popular player with the fans, so maybe Towles won’t have to be so thick skinned after all, at least in the beginning.

Amazing that a talent like Towles stuck to his guns and came to UK given the unrest going on here.
Unrest? Let’s be real, we’re a 6-6 season away from there being no problems at UK. The “golden age” of Coach Brooks cashed in two 7-6 seasons at the end and fans were far from jumping off a cliff then. Plus, Towles knows he’s too talented to not at least get 3 full years of SEC play at his home state’s flagship university. He knows the potential payoff is high and expectations are low at UK.
Playing qb for uahk is like being king of the [email protected]
Winning the Big East in anything but basketball is like winning a race at the Special Olympics. Yeah we won but we’re still retarded. L yeah, #L1C4.
I just hope he is as good as advertised. I am so tired of all the expectations of all these so called 4 or 5 star prospects that we get that always seem to be no where near as good as they were supposed to be.(We don’t get but maybe one a year so it may be a numbers game) Tim Couch is the last one that I can remember that came close to the hype. He actually was even better than advertised.
The Bunnings are good people. Back in the day, Jim and his wife, Mary, stayed with my family for a couple of days while on the campaign trail. Mary let me wear Jim’s 1968 World Series ring around the neighborhood; instant 6th grade badassery.
Towles has nfl potential and should start from day 1…. and Joker should be fired after the 1st game if he don’t
That’s a cool blue sweater.
One of the best pieces of editing and story telling. Well done.
I think with him and Maxwell Smith at QB, UK should be in good shape for the next few years.
Towels can play. Smith is a sec backup at best.
Pretty impressive video from Rivals. They’re stepping up their game.
heres another good one on jacob hyde a 2012 commit this guy is a beast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZdwHQm_1hA&feature=related
Nice linking John. This is about a 6 month old story.
I though the video was about Towles, not his grandpa’s glory days. I clicked on it to see highlights of the future UK QB, not Bunning’s perfect game.
#6 I agree! I’ve known Jim and Mary most of my life and they are the sweetest, most down to earth people you will ever meet.
I wish they would redshirt him.
