Part One of Mitch Barnhart’s Interview with KSTV

Have you ever wanted to sit down with Mitch Barnhart for an hour to pick his brain on all things UK athletics? Unfortunately, you and I won’t ever get that opportunity, unless we caddy for him at University Club or catch him riding solo at an Applebee’s one night. So it’s a good thing we know Matt Jones.

Matt sat down with Mitch at an oversized table for a one-hour interview last week for KSTV to discuss a range of topics, from facilities to coaching to Kentucky being awesome at basketball. Part one of the interview focused heavily on football and Joker Phillips’ future in Lexington. It’s the most open we’ve ever seen Mitch in an interview and he says some really interesting stuff about the Cats.

Enjoy.

The screenshot from the second video looks like Mitch is laying down some rhymes.

The Blue-White Extortion Fund, along with a poor football product, has run off alot of season football ticket holders.

Really like Mitch and trust in his leadership. Bonding is a sticky issue, I understand that but the amount of money that UK football brings in will clearly pay for any borrowed money for upgrades. This is a silly issue and foolish for fans to jump on Joker when we literally can’t get our team on an even playing field. I hope Frankfort feels a bit more pressure to explain their position. I think we all want what’s best for UK because ultimately, it’s best for the state.

#3. Your statement makes sense until you think of what Vandy is doing down there when they don’t even have an athletic department. Come on, get real!

    3. Boise State has a freakin running track around their field and they have developed into a top ten program. Granted facilities matter and can certainly help, but they arent the be all end all of developing a program. If you dont have facilities, you better have a coach that can do more with less, and we obviously dont.

Only way commonwealth will be full is if you put a basketball court in the middle

At least he get’s it as far as the football talent in the state of Kentucky. But what I never understood is why they won’t invest in a football coach. It’s not rocket science. If you don’t have talent then you have to coach what you have up. Just like Brooks did. So why not go out and hire a guy that can recruit in football like Calipari does in basketball.

That’s the only fix for this. Talent. And winning. But it all starts with a coach. Nothing against Joker but he’s not what’s needed here.

@5 Boise State doesn’t play in the SEC either. Let’s see how top ten they’d be if they did.

#4, Vandy is a private university, not a state school like UK. The situation is not really a basis for an apples to apples comparison.

BTW Matt, real nice job with the interview. Mitch is to be applauded for it as well.

Yea 6 we are already looking the other way on Jokers rumored affair. At least Petrino is a proven winner.

UK has no excuses for the sorry state of the football program. What is already allocated to the football program is poorly managed..ie the hiring of Joker as head coach.

Boise doesnt play in the sec but they sure slapped uga around now didnt they? Who cares if vandy is private? They have less money, ruddy facilities, and high academic standards and they still blowout uk because they have a good coach and we do not.

There is no excuse, NO excuse, for UK falling behind Vandy, OLe Miss, or Miss St. in football, but somehow we’ve managed. That starts and stops at the top of UK Athletics and we all know who that is.

16-I don’t think it is that simple. Mitch takes the blame for a lot of things that he has no control over, IE. the whole stadium issue. You can’t expect somebody to make a gourmet meal when all he has is bread and water. The most you can hope for is that he makes beer out of it so we can all get wasted to numb the frustration.

Mitch isn’t responsible for not getting UK to the next level after Brooks but he is responsible for not maintaining that same level with Joker. He hired him and it’s on his hands. However, we have problems that can’t be solved by Mitch (ie bonding and high school talent.) The talent that we do have typically won’t come to UK where they know they can’t win. UK is in a position to fail if it can’t get the bonding it needs to upgrade facilities. No “name” coach wants to come here when they know they can get the funding they need to take UK to the next level and real talent won’t come here without good coaches that can win. So until Frankfort changes things for UK, UK football is what it is and what it has been for 60 years.

    9. but would you say they are light years better than UK? And like I said, they still have a freakin track around their football field. And they dont have in state talent either, but somehow, they are in the top 10 every year. I dont think they would win as many games if they played in the SEC, but they wouldnt be in the cellar every year either. Point is, you can pick talent that you can develop and compete at a high level if you have the right coach and staff.

16 & 17 we don’t need a stinking stadium to win games. Have you been to the three schools I mentioned. All three are pathetic compared to UK’s. This stadium argument has worn its welcome. We need upgraded practice facilities and recruiting facilities and that’s a long way from stadium dollars. We need to stop chasing this stadium dollar and go for what we can get. That and a real football coach would give UK a better football program.

16 we have not fallen behind them we beat ole miss this past year pretty bad 30- 13. could of beat Mississippi state where a freshman qb played most of the game for the first time that season and lost less then 2 touchdowns. vandy the only one you could say might of past us witch im not totally sure of that cause they lost to Tennessee the weekend before we beat them so we will see. i think if we stay healthy this teams going to surprise some people

We need to overspend on a legit big time coach. we can’t control the bonding issues, but we can control what we spend on the staff. Get the personnel here and the legislature won’t be able to hide behind our lack of success. The facilities will come but unfortunately we are going to have to overspend.

#22…suggest a coach that will come and I am sure all will be glad to go after him…the problem is that they wont come…and you cant overspend the best programs in college football who have unlimited resources

Tired of all the talk, talk, talk. Let’s see some action. Or rather inaction when we open in a half empty Commonwealth in September. The only thing that will lead to change is empty seats. There will be plenty of those this year.

It makes me sad that its referred to as a “product” but the KIDS making the product aren’t getting compensated anywhere near the scale that the NCAA and the BCS conferences are raking in money.

Not only do I not want to sit down with Barnhart I wish he would stop doing pregame interviews and press conferences at all. He show only be seen at games and never heard from unless he’s introducing or firing a coach.

Let’s face it…..We’ve got a Caretaker for an AD that can’t look Matt in the eye half the time while spewing his boring BS.
We need a visionary with some enthusiasm that can SELL and with the courage to make some noise…..Todd really took care of his long- time yes-man on his way out, huh?

Anything positive you have about UK football Matt. You think you are going to convince Barnhart to fire coaches. You think you are the guy that is going to break the big story. Sad for anyone that plays on the UK team, that you are you!

Joker will be fired this year for sure. Hire Petrino! Tell him he cant own motorcycles or attend womens volleyball games and he will be fine!
