We were tipped off by someone over at Owensboro High School that their boys baseball team is about to finish one heck of a ride this evening when they take on Lexington Catholic in the Baseball State Championship game at Applebee’s Park. The Red Devils ended the regular season at 5-16 overall, including a 2-6 record within their district, but have rallied to win 8 post-season games, four of them by one run. This run, termed “one of the greatest turnarounds in Kentucky High School sports history” by the local paper, has all come under first year coach Kip Walters.
So, as a fan of the underdog and as the Jack Nicholson of the Kentucky Bisons, I consider myself an honorary member of the Dirty ‘boro and wish the oldest high school in the state a load of luck as they go for their seventh baseball title and first since 1987 in tonight’s finale. Had you been playing South Oldham, I’d be rooting for your downfall.
