Not Jerry Tipton’s Friday Basketball Notebook

The 2012-13 season is mercifully over, and despite having the #1 ranked recruiting class in the country, Kentucky failed to make the NCAA Tournament, and were unceremoniously dispatched in the First Round of the NIT by Robert Morris. Hard to see things being any different in 2013-14. To stay apprised and educated, follow me on Twitter @NotJerryTipton. Here’s the weekly notebook:
*Come On: After Kentucky lost to Robert Morris on Tuesday, RMU fans poured salt in UK’s wound by mimicking traditional powerhouse — and UK rival — Indiana: They rushed the court. An act that was previously performed only after plucky upstarts shocked heavily favored Goliaths, Hoosier fans have made it fashionable for everyone to rush the court. Favorites, underdogs, top 10 teams, perennial superpowers, etc. By doing away with the conventional wisdom that “if you rush the court you have no dignity and you’re sending a message that you did not expect to win” Indiana has it made it cool for everyone to do it. By rushing the court, Robert Morris students were sending a message: “Our program is no different than Indiana.” By turning decades of tradition on its head, IU has shown itself to be on the cutting edge of college basketball culture. What’s next, Tom Crean? Cutting the nets after a loss? LOL.
*Blue: After Kentucky’s disappointing end to its disappointing season, UK freshmen Willie Cauley-Stein, Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress all promised that they would return to Kentucky next year for a run at a national title. Reading between the lines, one can see what a fatal blow this is for Big Blue Nation: Nerlens Noel (impliedly, by his silence) has declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft. This was apparently such an easy decision for him that he opted to not even travel with his (former) team to Pennsylvania for the game against Robert Morris. If it weren’t bad enough that Calipari had players bolting for the NBA after just one season in Lexington, he now has kids doing this after half a season in Lexington. Is this what college basketball has become? Shaking my head.
*Joy: On Wednesday afternoon, Julius Randle committed to John Calipari and UK. This does not bode well for Kentucky. Cat fans had their big blue hearts set on landing Andrew Wiggins, but with Randle in the fold, this looks increasingly unlikely. To find out Wiggins’ reaction to Randle’s decision, I sent him a letter requesting a comment. In the interest of convenience, I included a self-addressed stamped envelope. However, at press time (Wednesday evening) I had not heard back, which obviously means that Wiggins is so disillusioned with Kentucky at this point, he isn’t even opening his mail. And to exacerbate matters, current UK freshmen Willie Cauley-Stein, Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress all vowed to return next season, which practically guarantees that Wiggins will not be in Lexington next season. Poor Kentucky.
* On this date: On this date in 2049, Indiana Robert Morris will still be celebrating a December 2011 March 2013 win over Kentucky.

How do you take such a negative standpoint from landing the best power forward in the nation? whoever wrote this is an absolute idiot. If anything we need Randle’s toughness in a young team more than Wiggins. And because he didn’t reply to some dumb mail sent by a dumb person he is disilusioned and will absolutely not consider UK anymore? who wrote this? Seriously… GTFO
^LOL^
charlie, you’re awesome, buddy! 5 stars for your response. sadly, you don’t even know what people will be laughing about lol

“Charlie” didn’t get it; that does not bode well for Kentucky!
Chuck……Chuck…..Chuck….. “Shaking my head”
Charlie. C’MON MAN. You really don’t believe that article is what he believes do you? KSR NOOB!
Who the F is this dude Not Jerry Tipton, he doesn’t know S_i_!
Cutting the nets after a loss, LOL! What a bunch of tools. We should compile a collage of all of the bush-league things Indiana has done this year: 1. making Sweet 16 rings 2. making “No. 1 Seed” T-shirts 3. that horrible painting 4. Rushing the Court 5. Cutting the nets, etc. Geez, you’d think they hadn’t won a game in decades or something.
Please tell me that Charlie is actually NJT adding to the post himself? Please? That is the only thing that will not make me weep for the future.

Glad i made some people laugh lol my first reaction was anger because I can see some people really feeling that way. woops lol
If anyone listens to Matt Walsh he had something similar happen this week. He went on a sarcastic monologue about how great gun control is. In case you don’t know, Matt Walsh is very conservative and so is his audience. Once he was done he said “now I know some people out there did not get the sarcasm and I will get a bunch of emails about that”. The next caller…just seconds after he said that, was an older woman going off on him about supporting gun control!
If you want to read something REALLY funny — or clueless — check out this direct quote from David Climer’s article on the ABCs of the SEC Tournament from the March 13th Tennessean. “T — Tipton, as in Jerry. For the last 31 years, he has chronicled all things ’Cat for the Lexington Herald-Leader. Five coaches have come and gone but Tipton keeps writing ’em like he sees ’em. There’s no better beat writer in college sports.”
NJT can’t top that for hilarity.
I looked at some of the comments. iI get it, ar I probably would get it if I bothered to read it. I don’t any more. Not Jerry Tipton was a good idea that has been carried to far. As far as I’m concerned, it is not funny any more. I won’t read it any more, and I’ll probably use the comments to protest against it unlee it is discontinued. Whoever the writer ias, you are talented, but please use your talent to write something else, something that i would probably enjoy reading.
Nice jab at Jerry the Luddite. NJT and accompanying comments never fail to deliver.
16) I agree. This is getting old. We get it. How about something new Not Jerry Tipton?
