Not Jerry Tipton’s Friday Basketball Notebook

tipton2

The 2012-13 season in underway, and just like in 1989 and 2009, the Kentucky Wildcats will struggle to make the NCAA Tournament. To stay apprised and educated, follow me on Twitter @NotJerryTipton. Here’s the weekly notebook:

*Dissident: Kentucky fans are giddy about UK’s recruiting haul for the class of 2013. However, on Monday John Calapari published a shocking missive on his website in which he essentially said that these players are no good. It was a rare moment of candor and honesty from the UK head man. In the article, he blasted the high school seniors, lamenting the fact that they have no idea “how hard they have to work.” He also said that the honors and accolades bestowed on the young stars “means nothing.” Similarly, he complained that the freshmen-to-be would not enable the 2013-14 Cats to “achieve their goals.” Blunt, to be sure, but it is nice to see Coach Cal say what many of us have been saying all along: These guys just aren’t that good.

*Not For You: UK freshman Willie Cauley-Stein was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week last week. This was not what Kentucky fans wanted to see. There are four highly-touted freshmen on this team, and if one of them decides to claim an award for himself — to the exclusion of his teammates — then chemistry problems are bound to surface. And though WCS had a chance to make amends by publicly dedicating the award to his fellow frosh, he opted not to do so, saying in effect “this award is mine, and the rest of you can go straight to hell.” Wow. Shocking (implied) words from the soft-spoken Kansan. No wonder this team has already lost twice as many games as last year’s team did all season.

*Nothingman: Last Sunday, UK commit Karl Towns, Jr. allegedly achieved a quadruple double. This does not bode well for Kentucky. Assuming the statistics are accurate (a videotape of the game has yet to be produced, so this very well could be an outright lie), then Towns is obviously playing against weak competition. How will he be prepared for the rigors of college basketball by playing against a bunch of kids who are smaller than he is, and not as good as him? And to make matters worse, Towns allegedly broke a rim while dunking a ball during the game, which means that not only is he playing against subpar competition, but he is also playing on subpar equipment. Imagine his shock when he gets to Memorial Coliseum and finds out that the rims are sturdy enough to withstand dunkshots. I’m not Nostradamus, but this has disaster written all over it.

* On this date: On this date in 2012, Indiana had already experienced the high point of their entire season.

I’m sorry but I just don’t see Stein saying that…he’s a good team mate

  7. Will Make the NCAA

The Cats will make the NCAA tournament. We’ll get our 20 plus wins against a down SEC, but we’ll have enough starpower to make the tournament. We will probably win the first round and then get bumped by some up and coming Butler type. Then we will see the sad faces of these freshmen as they declare for the NBA. The program will continue and we will be back and win the final four within three years. All is well.

6 – I’m so sick of seeing this kind of thing. All you people claiming to be realists or whatever get so much joy out of trying to crush the hopes of normal fans. All of us know that is likely to happen, but if you don’t believe or get excited about the chance that our team will put something together and make a really good run, what is the point of being a fan? Your life must suck.

It’s sad isnt it #8? Anybody here seen the movie ‘Idiocracy’? I said it when I first watched it and I’ll say it here….it’s a comedy but is as prophetic as it is hilarious IMO. SMH.

Criticize Cauley-Stein winning freshman of the week ?!? Unbelievable. And by not dedicating the award causing chemistry problems? Jerry, your LHL won a Pulitzer for no less than printing garbage! Your paper’s causing the chemistry problems bud. LHL’s the one who told UK fans to “go straight to hell” by accepting that award!

I will continue to believe that anyone who claims ignorance in the comments section of NJT is actually working on a higher plane of satire, where they’ve taken the joke one step further. And maybe, just maybe, those that get mad at the “ignorant” ones, are taking it even further. It’s a cycle I’ve convinced myself exists, so I can read all the comments and retain some confidence in the intelligence of our fanbase…
