If you are like me, and I know you are, you get absolutely worn out with the continued infusion of white, scrappy guards that find there way to Duke’s campus every year. While the talent of Bobby Hurley, Chris Collins, Wojo and JJ redick may vary, their annonyingness stays the same.
Which brings me to Jonathan Scheyer. When I saw him warming up yesterday, my thought was, “well here is another one.” Skinny white guard who can shoot lights out but looks to be majoring in grating on my nerves. But then his AAU coach and I began to talk and he told me, “Jonathan is different….wait you will see.” And see I did. Scheyer was a joy to watch, scoring 36 points without ball hogging in any form, going 14-14 from the free throw line and leading his team to a relatively easy victory over Memphis Ridgeway.
After the game, I got a chance to speak with him and he is a better kid than player. Extremely nice, well spoken and something you rarely see in a high school player, actually interesting. When asked who he modeled his game after he said Manu Ginobli, an odd but fairly on target choice. He spoke glowingly about Duke but also about the college experience and said he could not wait to be on such a beautiful campus.
As he left, I found myself perplexed. I am supposed to be a Duke hater, but I cant hate this guy. Oh well, I guess Cherokee Parks cant be the only Duke player I like forever. Long live Scheyer!!!
