No Max Smith = No Chance for the Cats

Morgan Newton unsuccessfully tries to stop Florida DB Jaylen Watkins from scoring a TD, after Newton threw a 2nd quarter interception. (h/t Yahoo Sports)

– This week there was no indication from the coaches that Max Smith may not be able to play today, but the SEC’s leading passer never got close to the field after suffering a bruised shoulder last week. Morgan Newton got the starting nod and showed UK fans how easy it is to disappoint. Newton was Florida’s best player throwing 3 interceptions and giving them a TD. His QB rating was 2.77, and he completed only 6 of 20 passes. Newton showed us that completing short passes isn’t a given.

– As bad as Newton was, the Cats started the game strong with back-to-back 3 and outs on defense. The offense was running the ball well (they finished the 1st half with 111 yards rushing, while only producing more than 100 rushing yards against Kent State) and did a good job of keeping the Florida offense off the field. The game got out of reach after Newton missed a WIDE OPEN Daryl Collins that could’ve resulted in TD, to cut the UF lead to 10-7. The next play Newton threw a bad pick six, making it 17-0. They never had a chance after that.

– What makes this game more depressing than a regular loss to Florida, was the fact that the defense came out ready to play. Jeff Driskell fought pressure throughout the first half getting sacked 4 times, Florida’s powerful rush game was held at bay, and players were making athletic plays, shedding blocks and making tackles. The game showed a lot of promise, IF Max would have been playing Quarterback.

– Watching the second half is one of the sadder things I’ve ever seen on a football field. I couldn’t force my worst enemy to watch it; it was just too painful. Newton progressively got worse while Joker refused to take him out. It got to the point where I felt bad for Morgan, because he could do no right. During the downward spiral, the team began to give up. They looked like a helpless crew that just wanted to get off the field. The first half showed that the Cats could still battle for their coach; in the second half we saw Joker lose his team.

– For fans, we once again had the opportunity to get our hopes up with solid defensive play early on, and like clock work we were disappointed with self-destruction as the game progressed. If you didn’t give up on Joker last weekend, I’m sure you have now. I didn’t want to but, but Joker’s failure to make in-game adjustments proved to me that he cannot be the Head Coach. Not only did he delay taking out Newton, he also changed nothing at halftime. The Cats produced only 50 yards of offense in the second half. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Well this thing is more jacked up than Ricky Bobby’s kid on Mountain Dew. Something has got to change.

Sounds to me from this description of the game that the cats have enough talent to play with people. So it must be poor coaching that is holding them back.

That is 26 losses in a row to FL. Either the athletic dept gets serious about the football program or the season ticket sales will be down another 17,000 next year.

We stunk it up out there specifically on offense and the kicker. Good lord man, kick a field goal won’t you! Joker hung himself out to dry sticking with Newton.. Surely we would have won if Max was QB.. I mean, what is his record as a starter? 7-0, 8-1? Ha ha ha. He must be made of marshmallows. God he stays hurt.

Too bad Mitch Barnhart is too stupid to see this. WE NEED A NEW COACH Mitch and YOU’RE TOO STUPID TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!! I agree with #15 and #16 in that it is poor coaching and that the athletic dept does need to get serious about this problem. They got their heads stuck up their arses so high because of basketball they can’t see what’s happening to the football program.

We all know Joker is gone at seasons end, if not earlier, so what are some realistic coaching options that will be available for hire over the offseason.

(Instead of sit here and talk about how much we suck lets have a discussion about something pertaining to the validity of the program)

Firing Joker, would at least show that the AD is aware of what’s going on.
Without taking immediate action, shows they are turning a blind eye to the Football Program.

Worst case scenario, UK finishes the season without another win. Best Case scenario with Joker leading this team, possibly winning one more “cupcake” game.

  37. Some Answers
    6:21 pm September 22, 2012 Permalink

@32. Well first I would’ve benched Newton after missing several open receivers and throwing the pick on a middle school level pass. Even the announcers could see it. Second, I might try something different to get my team ready to play. Zero 1st Qtr TD’s in 16 games is inexcusable if not laughable. Third I would have a coaching staff that moves talent forward and doesn’t run off most of the seniors and juniors on the team. Joker: “we’re a young team 72 Fresh and Soph” Reporter: “Why don’t you have upperclassmen?” Joker: “I don’t know, different reasons.”

Additionally, I would have some idea of what was going on in the game…Delay of game starting overtime, delay of game punting in your end zone, forgetting to play players you would like to see, etc.

    Get a clue.

  38. Hey Nick Roush
    6:26 pm September 22, 2012 Permalink

The only reason UK’s defense experienced any success is FL is coming off two huge road wins and was playing a patsy. They were flat and bored and still basically did what they want. In the second half the just lined up and ran it down our face.

Somebody needs to write a very critical article about Joker that actually has some football knowledge. No one has addressed the comical stat of no 1st QTR td’s in 16 games, and no 1st QTR pts this year. The poorly timed penalties, the players defecting, getting suspended, smoking weed, etc. The lack of player development, the 4-13 SEC record, the absolutely mind blowing in game decisions based on score and situation. Be honest and stop kissing ass for once (this especially goes for Rashawn)

  39. Where are you
    6:37 pm September 22, 2012 Permalink

Where are the folks saying let’s wait until November and give Joker a chance to turn it around? Have you figured out in 4 games what people who know football figured out in 1?

  40. mikeyUKfan
    6:42 pm September 22, 2012 Permalink

Well we have to accept it that Joker is here until the end of the season, Mitch said that the other day. I really think Mitch is giving Joker all the rope he can stand until the end of the season then say goodbye to him. I really like Joker but he is not a good head coach, maybe he’s a good offensive coordinator I don’t know but he is not a good head football coach. Yes Joker has done things right since being at UK and we’re proud that Joker done it clean but Joker isn’t winning and that’s all that matters in NCAA football.
Joker it’s been nice to know you and I am really proud of the clean UK football team you have put on the field, I wish you well Joker and truly hope the best for you, which is not the head coach of UK football…
