Yeah, I couldn’t bring myself to post a picture of him in UT garb
Though I was conditioned from birth to hate all things Tennessee, and thusly, all things orange, I found a way to somehow really, really like Chris Lofton. It wasn’t like he spurned UK and chose UT; as we all were reminded innumerably by any RAYCOM broadcaster, it was the other way around. Through it all, despite the cloaks he wore on gameday, I always found myself watching him, wanting him to hit ridiculous fall-away threes. Or buzzer-beaters.
Lofton wasn’t given much of a shot out of high school, due mainly to his size, but he certainly made the most of his abilities at the college level. Now, after an understandably tough year, he was again overlooked, as he wasn’t selected in last night’s NBA Draft.
The knocks on Lofton are familiar: too small, can’t create his own shot off the dribble, can’t guard, not quick enough. It is even assumed by some that erratic teammate JuJuan Smith will be picked up before Lofton. That doesn’t make sense to me, but I don’t really understand the NBA. I mean, I still don’t get why B.J. McKie never got a shot.
I could end this by using a ton of empty cliches about not being able to measure heart or one man’s desire to realize their dream or whatever, but that’s not really necessary with Lofton. His play spoke for itself, and it would be astoundingly stupid if no one took a chance on him. Someone likely will. NBA execs aren’t THAT stupid, right?
