University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Nike Peach Jam Day 1 (Thursday Show Thread)

If you’re following an online live stream of the Nike Peach Jam this morning, you might see a guy pacing back and forth under the basket for two solid hours with a cell phone to his ear. Don’t worry, it’s just Matt Jones doing his radio show from the gym.

Matt and I arrived in North Augusta late last night and we’re up early to watch some AAU basketball. I’ll be sitting in the middle of all the big name coaches in the crowd (only for a new Facebook picture) while Matt takes you all through the scene on the radio show.

Join in on the fun by calling (502) 571-1080 or send a text to the TEXTING MACHINE at (317) 385-5148

Brian May is a guitar rock god. Funny story…May, Clapton, Beck and Page met Queen Elizabeth in 2005. Here was a transcript of the interaction:

Queen Elizabeth II had a crash course in rock and pop music when she hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace for hundreds of stars from Eric Clapton to Geri Halliwell.

Introduced to four guitar masters — Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Brian May — at the reception for Britain’s music industry her majesty asked: “And what do you do?”

May, from the rock band Queen, reminded the queen that he had played the National Anthem on the palace roof to start a concert marking her 2002 Golden Jubilee.

“Oh! That was you was it?” Elizabeth II exclaimed.

Moving on to Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, the queen inquired: “Are you a guitarist too?”

Guitar god Eric Clapton took no chances and, firmly shaking her hand, introduced himself by name.

“Have you been playing a long time?” the queen asked.

“It must be 45 years now,” replied Clapton, 59

Example of Joker not using basketball to help him. Former Moore HS player Mekale McKay — one of the nation’s top receivers and bball players — is going to Arkansas to play football on scholarship and is being allowed to play basketball there as well. He is so good in both sports that many D-I schools were recruting in basketball only, and other schools in football only. Why wouldn’t Joker get Cal to let this kid walk-on for the greatest team in the nation so that he could bring his receiving talents to the football team?

80- As I already stated, he chose Arkansas because they are giving him a real chance at both sports. Nearly every one of the other schools were not going to allow him to play both sports. Some of them (like South Carolina and Temple) wanted him only for basketball and were not going to be flexible for him to pursue football. Others, like Kentucky, were only on him to play football and were not open to the idea of him playing basketball as well. Ole Miss and Arkansas were the two top schools that were both open to the idea of being flexible enough for him to truly pursue both interests. It wasn’t a decision based on where he thinks he has a better chance to become a pro in one sport or another. It was about his freedom to play both. He truly doesn’t know what he wants to do. He has only been playing organized basketball and football since 8th grade.

99 — I respect your opinions all the time but on this one you, quite frankly, don’t know what your talking about with this kid. McKay is an excellent basketball player — every bit as good as he is a football player — and could certainly bloom into an NBA-type player. Just because he wasn’t recruited by the best of basketball schools doesn’t mean he isn’t really good or doesn’t have trememdous potential. He was one of the five finalists for Kentucky Mr. Basketball, was co-6th region POY w/ Derek Willis, is a legit 6-6 guard, and has only played b-ball since 8th grade. He has every reason to believe he can make it basketball — just as much as football.

I agree he probably will give up one of the sports after a couple years, but I can see also see basketball being the one he chooses considering how good of player he is and will show at Arkansas. In fact, he may be able to focus mostly on bball this year if the football team redshirts him (as they very well may).
