As any person who ever went to a Christian summer camp can tell you, “it only takes a spark to get a fire going.” The Omaha newspaper (Slogan: “We are more than the setting for that George Clooney movie”) is reporting that Nebraska is likely to join the Big Ten by Friday. If that happens, the chances are high that Missouri follows them and the Texas/Oklahoma schools are left with a decision. Do they stay in the (now) Big 12/10 and attempt to recreate a conference, potentially with two new members such as TCU or SMU? Or do they head out west to the Pac 10, leaving Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State floating in the wind?
If Nebraska has made the decision and the Big Ten decides to go 16, then the remaining Big East schools are in trouble as well (hear that Louisville?). And all could have been saved had Tom Osborne decided that the Big 12 was a better place to be than the Big Ten. The Omaha newspaper says it likely happens this week and if so, strap yourself in. The potential exists for college sports to never look the same again. All because of a bunch of Cornhuskers….who would have thunk it?
