NCAA says UNC didn’t break any rules

In “WTF News of the Day,” the NCAA has concluded that no violations were committed in UNC’s academic scandal. UNC just released a statement on their website about the NCAA’s investigation, which has apparently been ongoing since 2011:

“The University first notified the NCAA that it had identified potential academic issues involving student-athletes in African and Afro-American Studies courses on August 24, 2011. We asked the NCAA to join us in our investigation of these issues, and they agreed to do that. A member of the NCAA enforcement staff traveled to Chapel Hill several times in the fall of 2011 and participated throughout the investigation.

With the NCAA enforcement staff, our internal working group of University Counsel Leslie Strohm, Senior Associate Dean Jonathan Hartlyn, and former faculty athletics representative Jack Evans interviewed faculty and staff in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies, academic support counselors, and student-athletes who had taken multiple courses in the department.

Based on the joint review, UNC and the NCAA staff concluded there were no violations of current NCAA rules or student-athlete eligibility issues related to courses in African and Afro-American Studies. As a result, the NCAA did not add any allegations or include this issue during the University’s appearance in October 2011 before the Committee on Infractions.”

So, Rick Minter taking his girlfriend to dinner during an official visit is off limits but academic fraud ain’t no thang? WTF?

It is the ACC, they operate off reputation. Someone decided they were high profile educational institutions. Once that was established there has been no reason to question their educational content. A degree in underwater basket weaving or the ramifications of the dirt particles in ant feces from below the equator and above is greater than a law or medical degree from the SEC. According to the NCAA.

NCAA, ESPN, CBS, etc., all have a boner for UNC. Nothing was ever going to come of this. This is the kind of thing that will hurt the NCAA in the long run, which is sad, but if they don’t seem to care, then it will be just.

Penn State didn’t break rules and got hammered worse than any program in history.

UNC cheats for a decade, but broke no rules?

High School students screw up and can be banned, but a university making up grades for current athletes is outside the control of the NCAA? What do they control/have a response to if not a school cheating to keep its athletes eligible?

How can any school take an NCAA punishment from this day forward?

In no way is this over yet. The former governor of the state of north carolina is doing his own investigation right now as appointed by the current chancellor of the school. The NCAA based their decisions off of their findings from last year, 2011. Julius Peppers’ transcript just popped up about a month ago, so new evidence is coming up every day. Much like the NCAA ruled Rose ineligible after “new evidence” popped up about him, they can do with UNC. I would bet the souls of my family and unborn children that they won’t. When will schools do something and disband the NCAA? When will something be too much? Where is NC State and Penn State in all of this?

UNCMark-“The Carolina Way”=fraudulent degrees obtained by taking fraudulent classes, not anything a KY fan is jealous of or wants to emulate. Face it, your institution’s reputation has taken a big hit, no matter what the NCAA does or doesn’t do about it. You, however, do seem to be jealous of our #1 recruiting classes. Are you so surprised that kids and their parents appreciate Cal coming into their homes and being honest. Instead of promising them the moon, he tells recruits they will have a chance to compete for a starting job. He asks the recruits if they want to win a national championship. When they say yes, he asks them, “Can you do it by yourself?” He then tells them they will have to share the ball and if they don’t want to do that UK is the wrong place for them. He points out how many no. 1 draft picks he has coached. He points out how every starter and SIXTH man since he has been at KY has been drafted. He coaches a style the kids like to play, a style that shows the kids’ ability to pro scouts. Kids LIKE to play for him because he is a positive person who will do everything in his power to help them succeed in life. He even tells them KY is not for everyone. If you don’t want the limelight, UK is not for you and he makes sure they understand that. When are you going to realize that KY doesn’t need to pay these recruits. When you go no. 1 or 2 in the draft, the MILLIONS more you make as a result of that high draft position very quickly make up for not getting pay for play.

@39: Hold it, don’t you see? Roy can’t do what Cal’s doing! Obviously, Cal must be a cheater! Also, since Blockbuster can’t do what Netflix did, Netflix must be a cheater! It’s all so obvious now!

Why would the NCAA want to have anything to do with this when it occurs at most universities?

Here is a case about Michigan a few years back…

The NCAA ruled the exact same thing. NCAA doesn’t want to get involved with the academic side, especially when UNC has already gone to great lengths to reform the AF-AM department.

Also, I agree with most of you about disbanding the NCAA. The NCAA protects the SEC just as much as it did with UNC in this case. Again, they know these things happen at most D1 universities, if not all of them.

If success = cheating then the Ole Wizzard of Westwood was the worst in history. Everyone remember, the east and west coast believe their pi$$ don’t stink. They are superior in every way. They are not subject to the same rules as those of us in “fly over” country. There is no way a University in the “South”-East could possibly be more attractive to the nation’s best talent unless something was rotten in Denmark. When you add in the fact that UK has won more NCAA games than any other into the equation, this pushes them over the edge. It’s a mentality that is inbred, they can’t help it. The NCAA is of the same mindset. Let’s just keep hanging banners and move on……until they fabricate some scandal to level the playing field. WE all know that’s coming.

After some of the recent stupid rulings by the NCAA, there is no doubt that the NCAA needs to be investigated. Should Congress get involved and investigate this big-headed organization who thinks they can do whatever, whenever they want? Our government, has a check and balances system; yet the NCAA is all powerful. It’s time for Congress to appoint a committee to investigate the NCAA and then set up some committee to oversee their controversial decisiions. The NCAA has gotten out of control, and though I hate for Big Government to step in, I see no other choice!

Let us not forget Big Blue Nation about the paper writting scandal on the UT football program during good “ol Fat Phill’s” day. The NCAA didn’t find any evidence of academic misconduct and turned a blind eye on “rocky top” but sure perked up when Fat Phill said he had some inside info on Alabama recruiting & he was willing to dishout in exchange for UT not to be implemented with anything & had to get protection because the whole state of Tide Nation was ready to drop the Rammer Hammer Jammer in Giving Phill Hell in Bama.

As I read the comments on here I see the BBN fans agree as I do that the Mark Emmert run NCAA is the biggest JOKE since John Wooden’s UCLA National Championships that were purchased with Poppa Sam Gilbert’s money. I would like to put some black axle grease in that pretty grey hair of Emmerts just to show him that he doesn’t fool anyone on how crooked the NCAA is. UNC & Puke have been “Taken Care” of by the NCAA for a very long time and it needs to STOP. I don’t have the answer but there has to be some Grads from the programs that have been wronged by the NCAA that could and should get together and bring charges against the NCAA for ScXXw jobs that they are getting by with. ENOUGH is ENOUGH
