NCAA is still looking to Nerlens Noel’s amateurism

Last season’s women’s clinic gave us this picture. What will this year’s bring?

Nerlens Noel still hasn’t been cleared to play basketball at the University of Kentucky, according to Adam Zagoria. A “source” told SNY.tv that Nerlens is cleared academically, but the NCAA is still looking into amateurism issues surrounding his recruitment. There are questions around how he paid for some of the unofficial visits he took before signing with UK.

Since Noel is already participating in team activities, he falls under the 45-day window, which allows student-athletes to practice, but not compete, for 45 days while their amateur status is investigated.

“He’s clear on the academic side,” Zagoria’s source said. “But basically if an incoming prospect clears on the academic side but is delayed in full clearance on the amateurism side, they have a 45-day grace period to practice.”

“Will it be resolved by Midnight Madnes?” the source added. “Or even by the season opener? No one knows at this point. UK is downplaying it publicly but I’m sure they’re a bit concerned.”

    I have a thought/question…

KSR has constant contact with UK coaches, players and admin. Why do we learn about this through Zags blog? I dont understand how you can be a speaker that UK luncheon, travel with the championship trophy, special guest at Fantasy Camp, play golf with Pratt/Leach, have multiple sources within the program, but yet still use Adam Zagoria as the source for the elgibilty of a UK BASKETBALL PLAYER! We are not talking a recruit, but an actual player who is within the program now. How has this question not been asked and addessed by KSR until today?

You mean to tell me that Adam Zagoria has more connections to UK admin then KSR, or is it that KSR has been muzzled on the matter? Please KSR, distance yourself from UK admin so we as fans can be informed, rather than finding out from Zags blog…please get back to your roots!

I’m so sick of this crap! Seriously when are these schools going to wise up to the NCAA and the farse that they are? They are not out to help these kids! They are only for themselves! Drop this POS organization already and create one that is governed by the member schools themselves! Not one that is run by stuck up pricks that couldn’t care less about the kids just wanting to go to school and play ball!

This totally pizzes me off. If he was at any other school, it would be a non-issue. At worst, they would handle it like the Josh Selby debacle at Kansas – he would have to sit a few games and pay back “benefits”. Hell, the NCAA actually allowed Selby to use some of his financial aid that he got from KU to pay back the benefits, so in effect, KU was allowed to “buy” him. I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Emmert and his cronies dragging this out as long as possible. Someone with deep pockets should hit the NCAA with a lawsuit. I bet Cal can’t wait for the “superconferences” to come about so that he can tell the NCAA how far to stick it where the sun don’t shine.

NCAA is still investigating Noel, but paying no attention to obvious cheating at UNC and major smoke at Duke.

Sounds about par for the hypocritical course.

They are still looking at Bazz too, right? Or have they already cleared him.

NCAA – “Nerlens Noel has been deemed ineligible for receiving $52.46 in impermissible benefits, from someone affiliated with the University of Kentucky, to fill up his car with gasoline. This person was determined to be a related to UK after he tweeted ‘Nerlens to UK baby!!! #WeAreUK #FearTheFlatTop’ on April 12, 2012. The NCAA is investigating further to determine whether there is a deeper meaning of a the character “#” as this is not used in typical English writing.”

    9) Here’s another thought. If Matt rambled off at the mouth about everything he knew from sources in the program then these sources would probably stop talking to him. One of the drawbacks of KSR getting as big as it is now is that they just can’t break news the same way they used to. However, they can allow other blogs to say it it first and get it out there, then confirm later.

  40. BigBlue1976

He will probably have to sit out 3 games and pay back some money. This could be about any visit he took, not necessarily to UK.

Matters of this is simple to fix. It should be the responsibility of every school to pay the cost of traveling and accomidation expenses for an athlete to make an official visit to their school. They are asking these kids to travel across the country so they can make a sales pitch to get them to play at their school. Why should a kid have to pay for this.

  48. BigBlue1976
    2:11 pm October 10, 2012 Permalink

    47) It already is allowed. We’re talking about UN-official visits for Noel.

  49. Linda Taylor
    2:11 pm October 10, 2012 Permalink

40 – I remember reading that his visit to UK was an official one and that it was his only UK visit so at least he won’t be in trouble for any UK-related infractions. However, he may have had help paying for some unofficial visits elsewhere. He didn’t arrive until right before classes started this fall so his 45 days wouldn’t have begun until after that point. Surely the NCAA should have an adjudication soon. Wait, what am I saying, it’s the NCAA we’re talking about here, they do whatever they want, whenever they want.

It’s all about distraction. The NCAA needs to keep this going front-and-center to deflect attention away from the academic fraud and jewelry situations at UNC and Duke.

  53. VISITS
    2:23 pm October 10, 2012 Permalink

    I don’t understand “un”official visits.

They should just cut those altogether. If it is “un”official visit, then what does it matter who paid for it (as long as it was not the school).

  54. Linda Taylor
    2:24 pm October 10, 2012 Permalink

We shouldn’t be too worried about the first part of the season anyway. This is the youngest team we have ever had and it will take awhile for it to get to the point where it is running on all cylinders. The big question is how long will Nerlens be out. I can’t see how the NCAA could possibly make him permanently ineligible. There is too much precedent set for him paying back the money and sitting out a few games. If they go over that there will be a huge outcry all over the sports world.

  55. St. Paul Raiders
    2:34 pm October 10, 2012 Permalink

53- Right, let’s tell kids they can’t casually visit college campuses to try to help decide where they want to go. That sounds like a brilliant idea.

  56. njcat

NCAA has zero credibility after doing nothing to UNC and Duke. Noel should sue their buts if they don’t clear him to play before the first game. They are clearly impacting his market value in the NBA.
