NCAA Committee on Infractions speaks about Memphis Penalties

The Commercial-Appeal live blogged the teleconference. I’ve pulled out all the Coach Cal stuff:

Question: What kind of stigma is there for the coach?

[Committee Head Paul] Dee: That’s for others to decide. Because no allegations were brought pertaining to the coach, we did not consider any allegations against the coach.

Question: Penalties are looking backward and not on Memphis going forward. How much is that an accountability issue with former coach?

Dee: You have a situation where the coach is the important person on any team. However the penalties in this case were determined by looking at where the blame lied in this situation. Having penalties going forward … is really the dilemma you have. Where should you focus the penalty? We decided to focus the penalty on the time the penalties occurred.

As for why Memphis is forced to vacate wins: “Dee said because the test score was canceled, it rendered the student athlete ineligible from the beginning.”
