NCAA Chair Mike Bobinski talks Ole Miss and Middle Tennessee State

NCAA Selection Chair Mike Bobinski spoke to Seth Davis in the moments following the bracket reveal. Bobinski touched on a number of topics, ranging from seeding to bubble teams. According to Bobinski, Ole Miss “would have been in regardless of today’s result.” Apparently Ole Miss’ win over Missouri already solidified the Rebels’ spot.

When asked about Middle Tennessee State (Davis pointed out that MTSU had 1 top-100 win), Bobinski defended the choice with the following reasoning:

– Veteran team

– Ability to win on the road

– 28 wins, “no rough patches”

– Win over Ole Miss

– In the end, he cited MTSU’s ability to win on the road (13-5)

If the “veteran team” argument doesn’t get under your skin, I don’t know what will…

Guess the Cats need to go on the road and stack up three or four road wins- maybe Middle Tennessee State will be willing to include us in their sked for next year at their place!

MTSU lost to Florida, Akron, Belmont, and Arkansas State on the road. Not saying UK should have been in instead but MTSU does not deserve it

Explain to me why it matters who is on ur effin team. They have veterans should have absolutely nothing to do with it. Its like it has turned into a popularity contest. Why would they even judge us without nerlens. Shouldnt it be the overall win/loss record and who they beat? This is a friekin joke.

A day that officially slams the door. Feels like crap with a stamp on it.

I did see ESPN’s Joe Lunardi went 68 for 68, correctly calling all 1 and 2 seeds and the last 4 in.

You have five high school all-americans, plus Stein. There are three or four potential NBA players. Yet, Cal could not get to the big dance. Further proof that he is a carnival barker without Wes buying him enough players.

  17. Mark Liptak
    7:17 pm March 17, 2013 Permalink

They got EXACTLY what they deserved. No one to blame but themselves. What the committee did or didn’t do is meaningless. The players had the power to make it in without trouble but they couldn’t or wouldn’t.

They’ve got a lot to think about this off season (I don’t count the NIT as meaningful games). Some of these guys will be back next year because they aren’t going to the NBA that’s for damn sure.

Maybe they can actually reflect on things like teamwork, listening to the coaching staff and getting physically and MENTALLY stronger.

We’ll see. Probably the most disappointing bunch in the last 30-40 years of UK basketball, they’ve got to live with that stigma now, they earned that too. Maybe it will make them better in the long run. Hope so.

We have to not be on the line (bubble) for any year. If this occurs, NCAA will not select us for a host of reasons but we all know why really. We have to always leave no room for this. It’s unfair but we are Kentucky and with that comes hate. It’s who we are.

I know most of the posts criticizing Cal are trolls, but really, how is this on the coaching staff? They had no idea Alex Poythress was going to be a bust when they recruited him and no one could have predicted Harrow would melt down like he did based on last year’s practice sessions.

7 no reality is that in the 4 years he has been here he has really good season(elite 8, very good record), then a great season(final 4), then a nc, and yes finally in the 4th season with a completly new and young team that just so happend to be filled with average players finishes with by our opinion an average season at best. Even tho that average season we still went 21-11. Yes i am bitter about not making it after we won last year but i am not blind to reality like you seem to be.

Because the fans that want this whole team to leave and just start fresh next year are ignorant and blind..next year will need depth and leadership and I hope atleast 3 out of the 5 freshman stay to improve and Harrow stay and come off the bench.

#33 – I’m saying the coaching staff had no clue GOING IN to the season that Harrow was going to suck and be as inconsistent as he had been. He only practiced with last year’s team for one season and apparently took it to Teague on a daily basis. The staff thought he was the answer, and it didn’t take long to realize once the season got started that he wasn’t, but it was too late by then to do anything about it. You can’t coach him into not being a headcase — that’s on Harrow to get over himself.

Clearly the NCAA is trying to reward the 4 year student athlete concept this year with all the small schools getting in over schools in power conferences. Kentucky’s championship last year called that model into question much to their chagrin.

Seriously folks, A “last four in ” NCAA appearance would not have sweetened this season one bit…unless we went on a tear and won two or three games. I don’t think anyone on this site realistically could expect that to happen.

  56. TBone
    7:56 pm March 17, 2013 Permalink

This is ridiculous. We, in no way, “deserved” to get in. Could we have made it… maybe. Deserve to… no. This was a down year in college basketball across the board. We were in control of our own fate all season and we didn’t get it done. Quit crying. Baylor, @Ga., @Tenn., A&M, @Ark. Win 2 of these and we’re in. Beat a miserable Vandy team we’re in. This team did not “deserve” to make it by its own account, not based on the lack of accomplishments of others.

Message to Cal: Lesson learned this season. Loved the past 3 years and wouldn’t change them for anything, but not making the tourney is never acceptable (regardless of what last season brought).

@56, I’ll take a season like this if it means we hang a banner every other year. We lost the best player on our team to injury. Willy was out during the period prior to that with surgery. Any team out there who loses their best player to injury would have a tough time making it. Anyone who thinks we should hang Cal for this season is a moron and doesn’t remember the previous 10 years before he arrived.

  59. John
    9:42 pm March 17, 2013 Permalink

I didn’t think we deserved to get in till I see that a team with one top 100 win gets a bid. That is bull. I’m sure UK would have a sparkling road record if they didn’t play anyone ranked in the top 100. That argument by the chair is absurd. What you’re saying is you don’t need to play quality opponents.

It hurts. I am disappointed. The sun will come up tomorrow, and may not shine as brightly on our old Kentucky homes. But this year was truly the first “all freshman team” we’ve had. And 21-11, 12-6 wasn’t good enough to get in and opened the door for basketball politics at its finest. A new champion will be crowned for this season, and so long as it’s not UCLA or North Carolina then no one else matters. #WeAreUk
